Default Dr. Sanjay Gupta's Wedding *56kay*

Quote:

Sanjay Gupta & Rebecca Olson
The Love Story

As a neurosurgeon and CNN senior medical correspondent who spent a month with the U.S. Navy in Iraq, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, 35, has been in plenty of trying situations. But his resolve was tested anew when he proposed to Rebecca Olson, 36. "I wrote her a poem and in the last line asked her to marry me," says Gupta. "Watching her read it, I was very nervous—it was over a page long." Adds Olson, a family law attorney, "He was down on one knee and asking me to marry him before I even got to the end!"

The Setting

The Shell House at Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C.—a private girls school in Charleston, S.C., near Olson's family—was the site of the couple's lavish May 15th wedding. Gupta, a Michigan native whose parents immigrated from Northern India in the mid-sixties, "always wanted a Hindu wedding," Olson says. "I was thrilled to have one."

Bengaline linens dressed up the reception tables

The Bridal Accessories

The bride's hand is adorned with henna designs and a 3-carat princess-cut diamond set in platinum.

The Ceremony

Gupta arrives at the baraat, or groom's welcoming ceremony, a moment marked by music and dancing. Forty-five minutes later Olson, in a hand-beaded silk lengha (a two-piece dress) and a choli, or long scarf, was carried in on a chair by her brothers. The couple then took part in a series of Hindu rituals, including mangal pheras, in which they circled a holy fire four times. The person who sits down first is said to rule the marriage. "Rebecca won that one," Gupta says.

The Ceremony

Groomsman Bill Hemmer, a CNN anchor, blesses the couple with rice. Throughout the 90-minute ceremony, guests chatted and sipped red rum punch. "Hindu weddings have a casual feel," Gupta says.

The Wedding Party

Children of the couple's friends were flower girls.

The Reception

The couple, after traditional bhangra dancing. A raucous dance party followed in an 1860 ballroom that Tara Guérard of Soiree had transformed into a sexy lounge.

The Cake

Wedding Cakes by Jim Smeal made the chocolate-and-butter-cream confection.
I love his cake

If I have a desi wedding I would hve to do some research.

For Jamaicans:

Wedding: Its a crazy event where everyone and their mother is invited. Cousin twice removed and your baby sitter from back in 84. Just from my mother side alone could tally 200-300 (especially if the wedding is held in jamaica). I would have to put my foot down to keep numbers down or I would have to keep the wedding somewhere where only the people I want to be there will be there can make it. That is the plan right now .

These are certains things that are traditional:

A young goat given as like a blessing will be killed and cook: curry goat and a soup will be made.
The cake is a rum cake (ALOT OF RUM!! ). The top of the cake is not given out to guess but given to the bride&groom. They save it ( the liquer in the cake preserves it), and it is eaten on thier first anniversary.

I am sure there is more traditions that my grandmother will be sure to notify me of when that day comes

Yeah....I think you can have it covered in whatever you want. I would love to tell them to hold the rum part but I dont know if it would fly with my grandmother. You have some of the same traditions as well right?

Yes, we have the similar tradition of saving the top layer of the cake.

I don't think it'd quite be the same cake everyone was looking forward to if you held the rum lol

lol it would be bound to get messy, for sure.

Does your family put a similar typical desi pressure on marriage as you get older?

hahaha, lulz just like a desi wedding.

Rum cake, niiice. I remember in an episode of Seinfeld, Elaine eats Princess Diana's cake which her rich well profiled boss kept in a fridge in his office it was probably a decade old. I never got why people do but now I realise it's tradition

I forgot the meaning behind the cake thing but you can just guess...something cliche like long marriage..your life will be sweet or congrats you get to eat the cake and it wasnt thrown at you during some fight..
