Default The NBA Theme on NBC *audio*

I had no idea John Tesh wrote that...

That's kinda...well, impressive...I've been hearing that song for over a decade.

the beginning was a lil more dramatic. They usually had bob costas do a narrative (usually of michael jordan's heroics from the previous game). That was my favorite part

NBC should have kept the rights to the NBA...they did a much better job!

So tehy had a diff theme before this? I haven't heard it yet...I heard they're changing the theme song...Plus John Tesh, composer of this theme stated that the checks were like 2 years late.

* John Tesh said he has made 'in the six figures' in royalties each year off his theme song. Since he owns both the copyright and the publishing rights, he has the right to shop it around.

* During the 12 season run of The NBA on NBC (1990-2002) NBC played Roundball Rock about 12,000 times, or about 20 times per game when going to commercial or during halftime.

Nothing will ever beat the NBA on NBC… ahhh, the memories. That theme music was the best... it'd get me so pumped up to play ball after watching the NBA on NBC... I'd be out there for countless hours straight after a telecast. MJ and the NBA on NBC are the main reasons why I became such a big basketball fan.

From the in-studio pre-game show called Showtime, with Bob Costas and then Hannah Storm (or Hanner as Peter Vescey would say) as the hosts, to the starting introduction with the NBC peacock drawn with lasers from near the bottom middle of the screen, to the peacock and NBA logo swooshing across the bottom of the screen just before the introduction of the starting lineups when going to break (96 – 99 seasons primarily), to the actual game coverage, everything was done with great graphics and text (I thought they chose the perfect font / text size for everything, and always thought to myself that’s exactly the way I would lay out everything), to the theme music that will be forever engraved in my mind. I loved how they played it during each set of replays before going to break (starting about the mid-90's or so). The Prudential Halftime Report… the Miller Genuine Moments, who could forget. That NBA on NBC logo was vivid with colour, and even the NBA on NBC just sounded perfect.

The NBA on NBC was like an event. I scheduled my whole life around each broadcast. When the playoffs came around, and they would announce each year that all remaining games in the Conference Finals (and of course the Finals) would be on NBC, I was ecstatic. The triple headers – both regular season and playoffs were addictive. Sometimes we’d come back from playing hoops outside and watch the rest, or I’d just sit at home most of the time and watch all three games. When the Finals were on in June on NBC, there was electricity in the air it seemed like. The weather was hot and humid, we’d play basketball outdoors until about 8:50, then rush home in about 9 mins and we made sure that not even a second was missed for the start of the NBA on NBC telecast. (Now recently, I’ve even missed parts of Finals broadcasts because it’s definitely not the same type of electric event coverage on ABC). When they announced NBC was ending its NBA coverage in 2002, it was truly a sad day.

The ultimate broadcasts were done at MSG with Marv Albert doing play by play of MJ and the Bulls vs. the Knicks. Ahmad Rashad reporting on the sidelines, as well as Jim Gray. Steve would become the “Cyber Snapper” during the Finals. (and remember the post-game shows in the Finals on CNBC). Fratello was the Czar of the telestrator. I thought Matt Goukos was great during the last 3 Bulls title runs as well. The NBA on NBC voice overs done by Jim Fagan were priceless as well – he had the perfect voice for the promos (Game 4 - Wednesday night at 9 Eastern… 6 Pacific!!!), and the sponsers ads when coming back from commercial (The NBA on NBC is brought to you by… the irresistible taste that makes you say, did somebody say McDonalds???) – with of course the theme music perfectly in the background.

When the video game (NBA Showtime) came out, I had to get it, and even bought a new PlayStation just for the game because I was such a fan of the NBA on NBC. We also taped one of our rec league games and edited the footage by incorporating the starting of the NBA on NBC, putting the score on the screen with the NBC logo, and adding theme music and even commercials from old games. It turned out great (all we needed was Marv to do the play by play – but we don’t have $50 000 to pay him for each game).

I have about a hundred Chicago Bulls games on tape (many of which were broadcast on the NBA on NBC). I'm in the proecess of putting every game on the hard drive in digital format. I’ve already done this with several games, and have put about 5 of them on my portable Archos video player. I have many different video clips segmented onto the computer, including starting introductions from regular season games and the playoffs, plus the NBA Finals, as well as promos, commercials, end of quarters, end of games, and spectacular plays by MJ.

I can only wish I could be watching it today in HD on the 60” RPTV screen at home with surround sound… it was great enough back in the day on a 27” CRT TV with stereo speakers, I can only imagine it with today’s broadcast equipment.

I think it's time to go watch another NBA on NBC game from back in the day now.

Even if NBC decided to craete a new theme, whcih I heard they're planning to, it will takes years to get used to it. I'm not a much of a fan of basketball as I used to be, so that theme do brings back much memories...

Why is NBC creating a new theme for basketball? They don't hold the broadcast rights for the NBA anymore.
I heard "Roundball Rock" used on NBA TV for a little while, and then a slightly different version of it on NBA TV after that, but now I think they use something else too.
ABC / ESPN has the NBA contract until 2008.
And yes, I did write that above... just started typing away and the memories came flooding back. I actually watched the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals Game 1 between the Bulls and Knicks the other day too. Marv doing the play by play at "Da Gaaarden" on the NBA on NBC. Simply classic. Time to watch Game 2 of that series soon.

Yes, until 2008. Who knows if NBC will bid on the NBA rights again. They said they started losing a lot of money near the end after Jordan retired (from the Bulls). But NBC does have the NFL back on Sunday nights, so you never know...

I see..

I kinda grief with the composer...they should have given him some credits on air for writing that song

I'd have to go check the tapes to make certain, but I'm 99.9 percent sure they put John Tesh's name on the screen for the theme music at the end of each NBA Finals when they rolled the credits for the entire production crew for the NBA on NBC. I knew for a long time that Tesh did compose that theme.
John Tesh has actually composed a lot of theme music:
In 1983, he won an Emmy for Best Musical Composition with his Pan American Games Theme. His original music has been heard on broadcasts of the Olympics, Wimbledon, the NBA (his "Roundball Rock" theme is NBC's signature music), NFL, World Gymnastics Championships and Ironman Triathlon, as well as the animated series "Bobby's World" for five years. In 1987, he won an Emmy for his Tour de France music which, when released on his first album, was a Top 5 New Age hit. After being named "Best New Artist" by Keyboard Magazine in 1988, Garden City (1989), his second album on Private Music, again went Top 5, and at the New York Music Awards won the "Best Jazz Album" category, with Tesh named "Best Instrumental Composer." He took home his third Emmy in 1991, for "Best Opening Music" for NBC Sports' World Track and Field Championships.
I know NBC does give credit to Yanni as well at the end of the US Open (Golf) for composing that theme music. Yanni's theme music for the Open has never been released though and I can't find it anywhere to download.

I know NBC does give credit to Yanni as well at the end of the US Open (Golf) for composing that theme music. Yanni's theme music for the Open has never been released though and I can't find it anywhere to download.
ah I see. The reason I said about John is because from this page: http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2002/...2/1394112.html

I know Yanni's version were never released and I doubt he plan to. I do know that they did gave credits to Yanni.

I think it's time to go watch another NBA on NBC game from back in the day now.
dude i love you. in as manly a way as possible.

i was thinking the exact same thing but i didn't bother typing.

i was gonna lament earlier about the nba and the knicks the draft was pretty entertaining tho if you caught it. they even got rid of marv albert from doing the regular season commentary. the rapport between him and walt frazier was awesome.

i remember when my friend told me the NBA was moving to ABC/ESPN and i was asking if they would at least keep the john tesh theme.

Ha. You know what, I thought I was the only one that thought the NBA on NBC was something special. But recently, on a basketball website, the NBA on NBC was brought up to reminice about the good old days, and now seeing it on this site as well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought the NBA on NBC was the greatest sports telecast ever.

Simonizer you the man. NBA on NBC was the golden years of nba broadcasting. Everything about it was dope. Now on ABC its kinda wack the only thing i find remotly funny is Stephen A Smith, because he speaks his mind.

Scotty Pippen should never be allowed in the booth again. Dissin Mike, that some fould shit.
