Sri Lankan Foreign Minister has been shot dead

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has been shot dead in the capital, Colombo.

Mr Kadirgamar, 73, underwent emergency surgery after the shooting, but doctors were unable to save him, officials say.

Police said the minister was shot near his heavily-guarded home in the city by an unidentified attacker.

There was no early word on the motive for the attack, but correspondents say suspicion is likely to fall on the Tamil Tiger separatist rebels.

A ceasefire between the government and the Tamil Tigers has been in place on the island since 2002, but there have been recent fears that it was in danger of unravelling.

Mr Kadirgamar had often publicly said that he was a potential target of the group, says AP news agency.

Mr Kadirgamar, who was from the South Asian island's minority Tamil community, was a close aide of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

A large security operation was launched after the shooting.

Armed police began searching the area of Colombo where Mr Kadirgamar was shot, as helicopters circled overhead.

fights have been going on like this for a while. It's not a surprise. A few of the countries presidents have been assasinated. The the pres. right now lost an eye due to a tamil tiger bombing.

Which fools? The SLs vs LTTE? or the LTTE vs the other LTTE? Cause ya know, the LTTE sectioned off into two seperate groups regarding disagreements. And now they're fighting against eachother also.

It was only a matter of time until another gvt official was assassinated. It's a shame because the more incidents like this happen, the less potential there is for peace.

these kinda things happen a lot in other countries, my mom's brother was killed by a bodyguard of his that took a bribe i guess...men in politics know they risk their life and their families by being in the spotlight.

but it is sad to hear that it happened poor guy
