My friend is tryin gco convince a few pple to jump out of a plane with him. However, a lot of parents are really opposed to this idea. So he sent this e-mail to help convince our parents that it's not that dangerous. I found some of the statistics on death to be interesting (dunno how accurate) and I thought some of u who might consider this sport would be interested in this post....
Hi all, I heard from several of you that the reason you can't come isn't money, but parents. And I find that sucks. Skydiving is not any more dangerous than any other sport. It depends on several factors. I mean, most of you will do it eventually I'm sure. Maybe you don't want to do it right now without your parents permission (even if you don't need it by the way), but when your 30 or 35, you won't care about what your parents think of skydiving. So why wait for prices to rise even more? Why wait to have kids and responsabilities and then take the "risk" of skydiving? ('risk' isn't really appropriate...) So here are a few things you could discuss with your parents to try and convince them... There are four basic factors that relate to skydiving's danger: gear, training, attitude and chance. Three of the four can be mitigated somewhat. When all appropriate measures are taken, skydiving becomes a reasonably safe recreational activity. In Quebec, automobiles only have to pass inspections when they are sold. So a car could run for its entire life without being seen by a mechanic for a rigorous checkout. Skydiving equipment is thoroughly inspected by a Transport Canada - Civil Aviation -certified rigger at least every 120 days. Basic safety checks are done before every single jump. If something isn't up to standards, you stay on the ground until things are fixed. To continue the automotive analogy, when was the last time you looked through the province's official "Driver's Handbook"? You know, the flimsy paper thing you threw away in glee the day they gave you your license. Yeah, that's what I thought. A good skydiver reviews their safety & emergency procedures regularly. Attitude varies among skydivers just like it does among drivers. Some jumpers are careful, thorough and very air-aware. They pay attention to their surroundings and always choose the more prudent option give two choices. Also, some potentially lifesaving devices are optional for additional costs (all these are standard at NouvelAir, the skydiving center we will be going to). Each skydiver has the choice of whether or not they feel the devices are worth the money. It is the same difference between a 16 year-old guy racing around in a dilapidated car on their new license and older drivers in safe cars, wearing their seatbelts that have learned what are and are not reasonable things to do. Chance is the one factor that can't be substantially reduced. Sometimes, bad things happen unexpectedly. This factor is where it gets philosophical. Once you have done everything in your power to make your hobby safe, it is time to stop worrying about the "what-ifs" that are beyond your control. You could die by getting hit by lightning, being caught in a flash flood, or falling in the shower. When your time comes, can you say that you enjoyed your life? In "PARACHUTING, The Skydiver's Handbook", Dan Poynter estimates 1 fatality for every 82,000 jumps. These figures can be compared with 1 fatality for every 2,308 hang gliding flights and the 1 in every 2,582 Americans who die each year in all accidental deaths. He also gives some other fatality statistics. Approximately 30 skydivers die each year compared to 105 people who died while scuba diving, 856 bicycling, 7,000 drowned (365 in bath tubs), 1154 died of bee stings, 60 snowmobiling, 47 water skiing, and 300 died after being hit by lighting! Then of course there are highway fatalities which number upwards of 50,000. Nobody can argue that skydiving is a safe thing to do. Generally, safety in skydiving is determined by the individual. Rarely do skydiving accidents result from equipment failure or bad luck. Skydivers use good preparation and judgment to manage the obvious and inherent risks Most instructors working at NouvelAir have around 5000 jumps at their active. Some have as many as 12000. Now you have to remember that you are always attached to this person. They don't want anything bad to happen either and they do everything possible to ensure that. I hope this help, you should give this to your parents. It really is a once in a lifetime experience, it's like nothing else you can imagine. And it would be really fun if a large bunch of us could go. If your parents still don't want, tell me, I'll see what I can do to try and convince them some more. Take care, and I hope this works for some of you! Marc |
