The sprawling English town of Luton might seem an unlikely place from which to foment revolution. But for militant local Muslims canvassing support here, Western nations are the enemy.

“We are here to educate Muslims”, explained one bearded man among a small group handing out leaflets to passers-by on a suburban street in Luton, a mainly industrial town about 50 kilometers north of London.
This part of Luton is very visibly Muslim, predominantly people whose families originate in Pakistan, with halal fast-food outlets nestled next to shops selling bargain telephone cards to call Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
The leaflet-bearers are supporters of ‘al-Muhajiroun’, a militant Islamic group whose views -- open support for Al-Qaeda head Ossama bin Laden, demands for holy war and threats to the West -- are readily apparent as they chat with members of the public.
Al-Muhajiroun is led by Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, a London-based Muslim cleric suspected of having links with detained militant Abu Qatada, the man widely seen as the head of Al-Qaeda in Europe.
Qatada himself is inside London’s high-security Belmarsh Prison, where he has been held without charge under anti-terrorism laws since October 2002, a situation critics compare to the United States’ detention of Al-Qaeda suspects at the Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba.
The cleric, a Palestinian with Jordanian nationality who entered Britain in 1993, was described earlier this year by a British immigration tribunal as “a truly dangerous individual” and “a key UK figure” in Al-Qaeda-related terrorism.
However, for Seif al-Islam, a name meaning ‘Sword of Islam’ in Arabic, the dividing lines are clear. “Great Britain and the US are crusaders willing to destroy Islam”, the ‘al-Muhajiroun’ supporter said as he handed out leaflets.
The British-born 24-year-old, heavily bearded and wearing a flowing jellaba robe and a shirt bearing the slogan “Umma for jihad”, or “the Muslim nation for holy war”, was open about his backing for terrorist attacks.
It was not just countries like Britain, which backed the US-led war in Iraq, that were at risk, he said. “The fact that the French did not join the war against Iraq does not make them any less of an enemy against Islam”, he said, noting that Al-Qaeda number two leader Ayman Zawahiri had “promised to attack France”.
The existence of such views among native-born British nationals, chronicled at length in British newspapers, have caused considerable shock to many in the country.
The anti-West utterances of radical clerics such as Omar Bakri Muhammad and Sheikh Abu Hamza Masri, the Egyptian-born imam of North London’s Finsbury Park Mosque, have prompted calls for them to be either jailed or deported.
However, a notable number of those canvassed by the Muhajiroun in Luton happily accept their leaflets, with even apparent non-supporters seemingly not upset at their activities.
“This point of view is shared by a majority of Muslims”, says Abdul Haq, another member of the group.
Recently, a group of Muhajiroun supporters attracted widespread condemnation in the press after publicly burning a British flag outside the country’s most important mosque, opposite Regent’s Park in Central London, after Friday prayers.
Seif al-Islam said he fully backed this destruction of his own country’s flag. “It’s a symbol, which means that we must reject the British and Western values, especially the allegiance to the queen”, he explained.

no wonder desis in the UK have such a bad rep.

Its due to all the Pakis and the fact that they make up the largest minority inmate population.

Its also no surprise they use "paki" as a derogatory term to describe all desis.
