Europe is xenophobic

ROME (Reuters) - The local government in Treviso has ordered the northern Italian city's Chinese restaurants to remove red lanterns from their windows because they look too "oriental."

"It's spoiling the appearance of the city," the head of the council's town planning department, Sergio Marton, told Corriere della Sera daily.

"The Chinese put up all sorts of stuff: lanterns, lions, dragons, there's even one (establishment) that did its whole front in oriental style."

Treviso, just outside Venice in the north-eastern Veneto region, is run by the populist, anti-immigrant Northern League.

Last month tensions between the police and the Chinese community in Milan flared into street clashes over a traffic dispute in the city's Chinatown district where wholesale clothing stores are located.

The tensions come amid fears by many Italian businesses over what they see as unfair competition from low-priced Chinese products. But calls by Italy for duties to be imposed on Chinese exports have died down in recent months as the country's economy has recovered.

The Northern League, which is strongly represented in the northern third of the country, was quick to capitalize on the Milan episode, saying it proved the need for a tougher line on immigration.

"Treviso is a city of Veneto and Padania, it's certainly not an oriental city," deputy mayor Giancarlo Gentilini said, justifying the order to take down the lanterns within 10 days.

The order states that the three restaurants in question had made no formal request to the council to put up their lanterns.

"From now on we'll be making regular checks and after the lanterns we'll be looking at all the other decorations around the entrances of the oriental restaurants," Marton warned.

So much for the enlightened Europe. You all know if this happened in America we'd be torn to shreds for it and it would just be another example of "ugly America." Many countries in Europe have imposed limits and restrictions on international businesses. France has been doing this sort of thing for years now.

wat are u smoking about..italy isn't the same thing as America. italy is a country of Italians. America is a country, well of everyone...learn to differentiate.

Europe is more upfront about preserving their regional culture which in turns gives them more control of their own country as opposed to trying to be overly multicultural on a large scale and then facing problems from within by ethnic communities they helped to develop in their own country.

but italy was meant for italians...and no one has the right to go in and settle there except for desi people. they can colonize any place in this world as they feel like it only because they started it first.
