Would this order be correct?
1st, muhammad defined it as "struggle to better your self"
then, the attacks on muslims by the meccan qurashi, the muslim community used it as "defend islam in the name of allah"
then abu bakur edited it for the usage of war under these conditions..

There is not a definite order for the term Jihad; it is a:

- Struggle that you go through to protect your country when you are in war.

- Struggle that you go through while learning.

- Struggle that you go through to earn the means of subsistence.

- Struggle that you go through in different situations of your life while staying patient

- Struggle that you go through while trying to up-bring a good family

And there are many example. Why order is important to you?

Its not only the Muslims who fight. Every nation has a right to fight when their benefits, people, or other causes are threatened by other nations or they feel the situation has come to a point where protecting themselves cannot be done without the fight. Although, like you have mentioned, muslims have some rules defined for the war that needs to be followed to make sure that innocent people are not harmed in anyway.
