i'm a fiercely proud indian but imagine what potential india had and what it did with it.

we have such a proud history and culture but that's all meaningless because we still can't gaurentee 24hrs of electricity a day, a full education system where everyone can read and write (there goes the 1st uni in the country...). ppl still wait for months and usually end up dying waiting for ops and hell, Doctors still have to reuse needles after they've been autoclaved (which doesn't get rid of HIV) in government run hospitals.

and it is a shame, but i think for a country who has been constantly bombarded with intruders and what not, and only 50 some years ago achieved independence, she's doing great. and i feel that the ones who live abroad who have potential of approaching these issues and many others in different ways to make her shine should really put an effort into it rather than just saying something, and not taking action. the mentality of most indians (in and out of india) has to change, too. there needs to be more action particularly when it comes to improving corruption and the overall infrastructure.

i personally made an oath a few years back that i will return to india inevitably in a few years and make sure that i am able to use the skills/resources/contacts acquired to be able to contribute it to the country in better ways. and i think india is headed in a better direction slowly but surely.

I agree with you but I must say the Brits helped a lot in India esp with regards to infrastructure. They also got rid of the standard "MahaRaja" for each area. NRIs do have an obligation to help their country in my opinion but as a 1st gen indian born in the UK i certainly don't think that that obligation lies with me. I also feel that with previous politicians india was screwed but Manmohan Singh is an Oxford education Economist and yet...the overall situation in India still has not improved. Only when they tackle the key areas such as corruption, the fucked up legal system, poverty, electricity!, water, health and disease, infrastructure and pollution can india really become a country to reckon with. If they managed to sort that out (which is possible in our lifetimes) then i dont think many ppl would be leaving india...i.e. reversal of the brain drain!

Sun Microsystems was co-founded by an Indian , among others but they only contributed MONEY. The genius behind Sun is none other than Andy Bechtolsheim.
