Default March In London To Shut Guantanamo!

Campaigners will march from Marble Arch in London to the US embassy this Saturday to demand the closure of Guantanamo Bay and the return of the remaining British detainees there to this country.

Eight British residents are still incarcerated in the US run military prison with no prospect of a trial or release. Jamil el?Banna came to Britain in 1994 as a refugee from Jordan and was granted permanent leave to remain. But in November 2003 he was kidnapped on a trip to Gambia and is now being held in Guantanamo.

Socialist Worker spoke to Jamil’s wife Sabah, who lives in north London. “This march is for the three men who died in Guantanamo Bay recently,” she said. “But it is also for all of the prisoners held there.”

Sabah’s only contact with Jamil has been through heavily censored letters. “I don’t want him to be worried about us, so there is so much I cannot tell him. I can’t tell him his brother has died, or how worried his mother is about him,” she said.

Jamil’s incarceration has been particularly hard for the children, she adds. “My son is only nine years old. He doesn’t understand much about the world, but I try to explain what’s happening.

“When he saw on the news that George Bush had told a reporter that he would ‘like to close Guantanamo’, he laughed and jumped for joy, thinking that his father would be home.

“I pray to god that this will be finished soon. I can understand that I have to be strong - but the children? That’s why we are trying to help not just all those in Guantanamo, but their families as well.”

Shut Guantanamo Now - Saturday 15 July. Assemble Marble Arch, London, at 12 noon. Supported by the National Guantanamo Coalition, Save Omar Deghayes, Stop the War and others.

Guantanamo houses hardened terrorists, and I am sure the majority of Bristish people want them there. They just had the anniversary of the London bombings, so why would they want that to happen again.

Why are you wanting to free terrorists who want nothing more than to kill innocent people?

Being a British Muslim, I agree no one wants terrorists back on the street, but at the same time, there are innocent inidivuals being held there without trial!........... without human rights............ and without anyone else in the world giving a shit about them! If the politicians arent going to do anything..... then its down to the people to raise awarenss and look for a fairer and more just system of interrogation and identification as terrorists!

Just my opionion as a british muslim!

Yes, but these guys were'nt picked up for shop-lifting. You have to be caught doing pretty bad stuff to end up in guantanamo. Maybe there is a few innocent people there, but the majority of them need to kept in a cage for the rest of their lives.

Unfortuantely, since these guys aren't going to confess to their crimes, there is no way to know what they have done, or what they are planning to do. So why take the chance. 95% of sane people feel the same way and that is why Guantanamo still exists.

Thats a very ignorant way of looking at it........... So tell me something.......

Hypothetically, say ur walking by a crowd of football hooligans, and u get caught up in the middle of a brawl............ the police arrive and take u away with the thugs............... does that mean ur automatically guilty and automatically should be banged up?!?!..............

I agree there are a vast number of terrorists who deserve to be there, but there are also a large number of innocent ppl there............ with no sight of a light at the end of a tunnel........ no representation, and no justice system!

What just leave them there to rot! even if theyre guilty of nothing?!?!

Some of them have been living there for decades with their families, some of them are chartiy workers, some of them were teachers trying to set up schools, etc., etc.

If anyone wants more information and wants to get educated on this affair, instead of spitting ignorant comments here and there without no basis, then visit the following sites:
