Download some software and your desktop can edit your music without the use of any expensive equipment.
Sound Forge (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=961)

It pretty much does everything an amateur would want to do.
But really the final product depends on your needs, and your recording equipment.
If you record your music on a desktop microphone, well your output will be limited, if your input is from a higher fidelity source well then your output should be of much higher quality as well.
Personally, I use sound forge whenever I work with audio, 1stly because I don't have any equipment and also because it's just a lot easier to use than all that expensive equipment. Admittedly, I am an amateur, but for my purposes I can think of no better product.

A better microphone, it all comes down to the quality of your microphone and the quality you wish to achieve. I don't need anything better than the quality I get from my desktop mic, so I didn't have to buy an expensive microphone, they can be pricey.

You wouldn't, you only need the software and the mp3s or whatever on your computer.
