View Full Version : The roots of your distaste for other religions...

From reading numerous threads in the serious discussions forum for the past few days, I feel it is apparent that many forum members seem to have deep seeded distaste/hatred for specific religions and it's believers, weather it be muslims, hindus, sikhs, jews etc...
It is not always expressed explicitly, though there is an undeniable undercurrent of animosity here.
If you do have a genuine dislike for a specific religion or it's believers, explain when and why you started to feel this way and what were the key influences and events in your life which have shaped the current feelings and thoughts you have about a particular religion.
Be honest and articulate, but try not to be blatantly offensive to people of other religions :)
*I'm probably asking for too much here, but please refrain from turning this thread into yet another personal slagging off contest between forum members
Well for me personally, I don't hate or have a genuine dislike for anyone. I think the main reason is because I've grown up, was educated, work and have lived in an area where I have made friends with people from all walks of life.
But if I was honest, there was a period of time in my life when I felt I really hated Jewish people in general. I think the main reason was because of sensitive situations in other parts of the world, and I was influenced by things I saw and read in certain media sources.
My feelings didn't really make any sense because although I know certain things about the jewish religion, I certainly didn't know enough, and I hardly know any jewish people.
I guess I can say that I don't hate jewish people. I do however HATE Israel.

It's a simple ask, but I don't think many people would conform to that way of thinking. I constantly ask for it...the thing is bro, most of these people are so embroiled in thinking that their ideology is 100% stone cold truth that accepting others gracefully is unfortunately beyond their rationale.
Ah well.
Oh well, the thread has been moved to useless junk and flame within 20 minutes of it being posted
People seem uncomfortable about expressing exactly why they dislike certain religions and it's people. Maybe they dont really know why they hate. They just do.

I do not hate muslims, but when i se a muslim who is quite into his/her religoon i treat them with caution.
The reason for this, and the roots you could say, is taht I have personally recieved alot of falck from the OTT members of the Islamic society. I have gotten death threats, people trying to rub my chandlo off my head, and little 12 year old girls walking upto me telling me Allah will kill me.
Once again, I do not hate muslims, nor do I think they should be treated any different. HOWEVER, i treat anyone from that religion who is over-enthusiastic about their faith, with caution because as per usual - I am the kafir, the infidel and anyting i say is wrong because i am a monkey worshipping bastard....
MY best friend, his gf and many of my other firends are muslim - they know my views and fully agree...

I totally agree with you about those over-enthusiastic and slightly demented individuals who follow the Islamic faith by totally misunderstanding and misrepresenting it, and like you I also treat them with caution.
These people usually have the mental capacity of a dead rodent. But let me assure you that the vast majority of us are decent and friendly people ;)
You'll get 'over-enthusiastic' and ignorant people from various different faiths, and one thing they seem to have in common is that they don't have friends or really know people who are of a different religion from their own.
And the most dangerous thing is that these types of people pass on their views to their children and we have a future generation of human beings ready to hate and have prejudice towards each other.
Soulflyer, I respect the fact that you were open and honest about your feelings and all I can say is that I think the people who have given you flack in the past are nutters. Don't let people like that influence your thoughts too much bro.

That's an emotional but brutally honest response. Just out of curiosity, are you a big fan of Steven Spielberg movies? (I like many of his movies, but thought his adaptation of War of the Worlds was a bit shit).
Also do you know any muslim people/families that you actually like, have common interests and generally get along with? Or do you feel that you can never get along with any muslim people because you feel they are far too different from yourself?
And this is a question for everyone in general...
How influential do you think various forms of media (including television, news sources, and even movies) are in creating/manipulating public opinion?

yea media does have a really big influence...'n those movies were based on tru live stories.....to be quite honest all of the muslim families that i've met so far i only liked the father in one of them cause he was really nyce but the whole family thing was screwed...the mother had dis distate for anyone who dint cover her whole body 'n they were just very hypocritical critizing india in front of me even though i nevr critized pakistan...but thats just the way wat ive experienced...
yea baptist christian ppl get on my damn nerves freakin dumbasses constnatly tell me that i'm goin to hell if i dont convert i live in a baptist southern town so it really sucks...half of my friends deep in their minds r always thinking thta i'm straight to hell....i dunno i just dont have much luck with fanatics cant stand them...also they're very hypocritical ...like they would tell me i would go straight to hell for being my relgion 'n be crying at the same time like its their sorrow that i will go to hell... but at the same time get pregnant

Islam (mostly the Sunni and Wahhab variants):
1. The re-occuring Muslim Invasions of India. How they f*cked up India and South Asia beyond repair.
2. The bigoted anti-idolatry and idolater stance in Islam (which in a modern context refers to Hindus) .
3. The present Muslim-extremist threat against the USA and India.
BTW, I dont hate Muslims. My two best buds @ my old college were Muslim, but like the other dude said, I treat religious Muslims with caution.
In reality I am cool with anyone as long as they dont preach to me and keep their religion to themselves.

I don't hate any religions, and I believe I have friends from a lot of different faiths.
The event which may have slightly changed my opinion of other religions (sometimes not for the better) is actually discovering this forum, and more specifically, posts from people like adren@line. In 'real' life, I haven't really met many people who have serious problems with other religions, thus pretty much all of the people I've met reflect well on their respective religions. It's when I come online that I get to see the negative side.
Please don't get the wrong idea, I do not hate any religions. I guess what I'm trying to say is that a forum like this would ideally improve the image of a religion, instead of doing the exact opposite sometimes.
