KARACHI,MARCH 29: Pakistani movie star Meera, a Muslim, has been sharply criticized, sued and even threatened after it was reported she kissed a Hindu actor in a film. Indian and Pakistani news media reported Meera locked lips with Indian actor Ashmit Patel in the film "Nazar," the New York Times said Monday.The film, produced by Meera's husband, Mahesh Bhatt, has not yet been publicly released, but was shown to critics and news media last month.Some conservative Islamists have expressed outrage at a Muslim woman kissing a Hindu.Some have called for Meera to apologize; while others have filed a lawsuit demanding she be censured for the "immoral scene."A few outraged citizens have even issued death threats, Meera said. Meera confirmed to the Times she kissed the actor, but she said there were no "vulgar or bold" scenes in the movie."It is a baseless controversy," she said in a phone interview from Karachi, Pakistan. She said anything she did in the movie was done in the name of artistic expression. "Acting means freedom of expression," she said.
