New Delhi, Mar 11: How crime prone is India? Every hour, 25 violent
crimes take place in the country while 59 housewives commit suicide every day.

http://autofeed.msn.co.in/pandorav3/output/News/6057bf30-70e9-4fdb-bc7f-2cd6b21b8c27_1.jpg

And two accidental deaths occur every two minutes across this vast country of a billion people.

The violent crimes include two rapes, four murders, 10 culpable homicides and one dowry death on an hourly basis, say figures compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

A snapshot of the other heinous crimes is also an eye-opener - 17 crimes are committed against a woman every hour, three kidnappings and abductions and five crimes are carried out against a Scheduled Caste/Tribe person, hourly.

In its latest report "Crime in India", related to 2002, the NCRB states that a total of 5,531,172 cognisable crimes were registered of which 1,780,330 were crimes attracting provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The rest were crimes reported under Special and Local Laws (SLL), which cover 22 heads like gambling, illegal arms possession and prostitution, an increase of 3.5 percent over the previous year.

Interestingly, the union territory of Pondicherry reported the highest crime rate (447.7) for all IPC crimes, 2.6 times the national crime rate of 169.5. It also reported 54 suicides per 100,000 of population as against the national average of 10.6.

Kerala reported the highest crime rate followed by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state, had the dubious distinction of accounting for 19 percent of the total of 35,290 murder cases registered for the year.

As for crimes against women, Chhattisgarh reported 38.4 percent of a total of 146,678 cases registered nationwide. Among the 35-mega cities, Delhi accounted for 24 percent (320 out of 1,312) rape cases and 34 percent (759 of the 2,251) of kidnappings and abduction of women.

Ironically, among the 35 cities, Delhi accounted for 61 percent deaths due to starvation and thirst.

The other highlights of the NCRB report revealed that nearly one fourth of a total of 10,469 crimes committed against children were reported from Madhya Pradesh. The state also reported the highest crime rate of 11.6 for crimes against Scheduled Castes as compared to the national average of 3.2.

Gujarat reported a 146 percent increase in dacoity cases while Tripura showed a 750 percent increase in auto thefts.

As for custodial crimes, 84 custodial deaths were reported across the country, for which 32 policemen were charge-sheeted but none convicted.

In a separate section, the NCRB report disclosed that 19 percent of all accidental deaths in the country were reported from Maharashtra and 26 percent of road accident victims were occupants of either trucks or lorries.

Goa accounted for the highest rate of accidental deaths - 71 per 100,000 population, as compared to the national average of 26.4.

West Bengal, Maharashtra and Karnataka constituted 37 percent of a total of 108,506 suicide victims.

According to the report, 59 housewives, on an average, committed suicide every day in the country. Yet, the average male-female ratio of suicide victims was 61:39.

I know whats going on there but i feel desi's outside india are so ignorant and all this news falls on deaf ears and this is true to some extent. Then they complain about their culture, if they come to look at it, they have nothing to complain about.

neeta sharma was interviewed & she told of the horrific things that were done to her yet all the indians that were writing on oprah's website were like "what shame! how can she talk about this???"

okay, for someone that's active in helping others, you should be raising awareness whereever you can. the attitude of "what's the point, it happens all the time and nobody cares" isn't helping the issue. what would you prefer we discuss? what jassi looks like after her make-over? i don't see how you don't get what i'm trying to say.

Crimes against women doesnt take place because of poverty. It happens everywhere, not just in India. The instigater could be a general "perversity" gene or something in men.
I know for a fact poverty isnt a factor. Check out my thread : http://forums.ratedesi.com/showthread.php?t=55521
Ull know what Im talking about.

Perhaps its because of the conservative culture we live in. Men cant express their sexuallity openly, so they turn to rape & molesting and we become victims. It is unfortunate but people in India are not willing to talk about sex and related issues.
Dowry deaths/abuse happen when the new wife is not able to up-keep the status of they family they marry into. Mostly happens in rich & educated families  .

In Pakistan, honor killing are very common and to make matters worse, many of these crimes go unreported. Many women are killed to keep "honor".
These crimes are rampant in south asia & one should do what they can to stop it. The next victim could be someone you love....

Stop judging people and try to learn how to express your views in a better and more coherent manner than saying something like: "YOU SPEND $50 ON ASS CREAM, WHY DONT YOU SUPPORT BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BITCH MOAN GAH GAH"

yesterday i rented this movie called maya

http://www.hollywoodvideo.com/images/boxart/dvd/119052.gif

it was soo sad it tells u on the back its about a 12 yr old girl go through a sick ritual after she gets her period, and the ritual was far more sick than what i assumed it was going to be...it was a very realistic movie kinda like a chandini bar and was very upsetting to see i felt sooo bad for her

then at the enbd of the movie it tells you about 5,000-15,000 girls get this done every yr in india, its against the law to do it but village ppl still continue this practice in certain areas

also i was listening to the world news on the radio n they told a story of a pakistani woman in court trying to convict these men of raping her, in jher village an elder let 40 men or more rape her bc she did something wrong, i dunno what she did but 40 men is disgusting and horrifying...the paki judge threw the case out bc there wasn't any so called evidence, and then the american says...pakistani government has claimed and promise to help women more and do them justice but this just shows that it was just talk...it was all talk. i felt soo bad hearing that and just disgusted

the arab world is full of stuff happening like this with their servants from thailand or the phillipines its disgusting and then on top of that the men rape little girls on the side

i see this stuff n it makes me truly wonder why god makes women punish sooooooooo much.

On a serious note....really sad situation. I think rapists should be castrated one PROVEN guilty in a court of law. Alternatively depending on the violence and severity of the crime they cam be killed as well.

However I see the larger problem as still prevalent view of women as chattel. This needs to change. I personally have no respect for a man who raises his hand or his voice against the mother kind. It is the epitome of cowardice...although some men think it is somehow macho...and there are also idiot girls who encourage it as "bad boy" attitude.

in the movie maya i just saw i'll ruin it for yall if you dont wanna rent it from hollywood video...

the ritual that i assumed would be umm fixing her down there like a lotta muslim tribal ppl do, instead 4 old ass pandits had their way with her, it was sooo SAD! n i cant understand how a desi culture rthat holds virginity and purity sooo high could really let this happen, like in the movie they believed the pandit was god reincarnated....someone needs to tell them that NO that's not right, these are just holy men that study the word of god n try to live by it more or i dunno...but yah

also the pandit in our family is some different kinda hindu sect than us and its a sect where the ppl dont believe in sex or maybe its just pandits hmm not too sure ill go look him up online and find out later

but ya in houston when i was younger maybe 95 ish there was a desi pandit/more spiritual healer guy that would see this divorced lady and her mom and eventually i think what happened was he raped her claiming to spiritually cleanse her somehow or something and he got in MADD shit for it, worse thing was everyone in town found out the name of the family and all the muslim ppl just got something mroe to hate on hindus for,.

maybe thats a first step india should take, preventing the rape of children

she just asked something? did you read the thread or go straight to the drama? she wasn't asking in a genuine way...she was throwing it in our face that we don't do anything and wanted us all to look like morons and her mother theresa because she started some project? this whole thread was about raising awareness and all she did was bitch and moan about the lack of action and how desis don't do anything but discuss. that's pretty pathetic...anyone that has done any form of charity or fought for a cause knows that awareness is the most important part. how can you say i'm patronizing her for her age when her posts do a great job of showing it anyways?

1) Since you despise her assumptions so much, pay attention to your own. I DID read the whole thread, and that's WHY I asked why you were focusing on her age. Make your points without talking how she's a kid, she's pretty mature if you ask me.

2) Throwed it in your face? By asking 'what are you doing for the wives in India' or whatever her first point was that pissed you off? Gimme' a break, you could avoided all this drama ... but I guess your'e done with school and have a little time for drama in your life. Time pass? Get over it, Verin.

The connection that you failed to make is that awareness is what prompts people to do something to help. It's great that you've done something to help the hunger situation, but why on earth are you haranguing people who are also concerned? Shouldn't you also be expressing your concern?

Really ive tried to express my concern and try to express my love for my country but then what can you do when you get stuff like " why are you being so over patriotic, what has the country ever done for you?

You started out negatively. Perhaps you thought that this thread was a stab at india, kind of a "omg, look at how those idiots rape their own women etc etc etc." Maybe that is why you took so poorly to this thread - you perhaps thought it was kind of like a tabloid sensationalizing the news.

If you looked at the replies though, I think it was clear that this thread was an attempt to bring about some discussion about the plight of women in india, NOT a stab at indian culture.

Your initial expressions were not of love for your country, rather you were scoffing at this thread & copping a superiority complex with the people posting in it. That is why you got the replies you did. If you want to bring about a positive response, present your ideas in a positive manner, otherwise be prepared for the onslaught.

The comments about your blind patriotisim were related to the fact that you are in denial about india being a 3rd world country. Before you start, I have been to india & bangladesh within the last year. Perhaps what you need is a clarification on what 3rd world really is. India is most def. third world - it's a classification that has to do with the type of economy, poverty level, and political influence a country has. Inida's economy is becoming more industrialized, but India's economy is mostly based on agriculture ,even with the boom in tech industries. Nothing wrong with being patriotic, but saying that india is not 3rd world is is fallacy. There are very few fully developed countries, most of the world IS third world.

there you go again with the attitude. You repeatedly say that you get what Verin was saying, but you were constantly disagreeing with her & purusing your assumption that you were the only one that's done anything.

Essentially, if I were in the same spot, I would have been just as insulted as Verin due to your assumption that I had done nothing when in fact a large part of my life was based around helping people from all walks of life.

You keep saying that you were asking a simple question - but you had to have known that implicit to your question was the assumption that Verin had done nothing. Your attacking of her shopping habits is further proof that you were looking to take shots at her character. Your question is not as simple and innocent as you'd have us believe.

Verin called you out on it, you got pissed, and here we are.

also do you think complaining and spending your time on rd is helping desi women, if you think we are all sooo ignorant start programs in school to educate the other desis, link up with a desi charity or like get with saheli n help desi women

2 rapes, 4 murders every hour in India Source: IANS. Image
Source: IANS
