The universal speed limit is that of light. About 300 million meters per second. Between particles that is. It is less through different mediums and behaves as both a wave and particle. So it is in essence a waveparticle.

For matter no, it is impossible. Energy, I theorize can be manipulated to go faster than the speed of light. We know already that it can go at the speed of light. I'll know for sure if I take quantm mechanics next year.

I always used to believe that bending space was a plausible concept/theory. That would allow incredible distances to be covered in a considerably shorter time.
My dreams were shattered when I realised (using e=mc^2) that the mass energy required to bend even a small portion of space would exceed that present in the entire Universe at current. Since mass energy follows the conservation of energy law, we know we can not get added energy out of nothing at all. Thus, it's more or less impossible.
Consequently, I've started doubting the theory of teleportation as a result...believing that it is next to impossible to replicate matter identically elsewhere.

Actually bending of space does occur, for example when a star implodes (colapses on itself) the matter become so dense that light will bend around it. It will pull in near by matter. The center of this is called the Singularity. The outside the Event Horizon because it is a beautiful display. They theorize that you warp through space by going into the singularity. That is if you survived. Which is not possible.
Also the law of conservtion of mass and energy and some other physics things do not always apply in quantum mechanics. The rules can be different at the subatomic level and when dealing with large masses collapsing on themselves.

True say, but then again, that's the bending of light...and going towards that event horizon, the escape velocity needed is HIGHER than that of the speed of light, and hence what enters, cannot be retrieved (possible black hole for the supergiants and other highly dense cores of large mass stars).
aniguchisan
February 18th, 2005, 06:45 AM
Naturally, the gravitational forces exerted by travelling through the singularity exceed anything we can ever imagine, so that idea is scrapped.
The only other option is a 'wormhole', but I guess we're yet to find one...highly unpredictable/theorised stuff.

I believe that space is being bent at the singularity. They say you can come out in a different part of space if you go in. So space would have to be bent.

True, that's IF you come out. The whole thing is that these points are theorised. When Einstein plotted this on his trampoline-ball experiment, it clearly showed how space 'dipped' when the energy was sufficient. Is space spherically shaped? For instance...if space was like the Earth, would entering a singularity over the Arctic Circle transfer you to Antarctica? The thing is, people don't know enough, not even Mr Stephen Hawking himself...I guess no one will, well, not atleast in the near future.
Entering a black hole/vortex could transfer you to any odd part of the Universe. Wow, what IS the meaning behind that?

Well the truth of the matter is spacetime can be disproven. Also time does not exist. So I don't know if it's true or what not.
1. Moving in spacetime is impossible because it requires motion in time and motion in time is self-referential.
2. Moving in spacetime is impossible because an evolution parameter (time) cannot be its own evolution parameter.

Why is motion in spacetime impossible? It has to do with the definitions of space and time and the equation of velocity v = dx/dt. What the equation is saying is that, if an object moves over any distance x, there is an elapsed time t. Since time is defined in physics as a parameter for denoting change (evolution), the equation for velocity along the time axis must be given as v = dt/dt which is self-referential. The self-reference comes from having to divide dt by itself. dt/dt always equals 1 because the units cancel out. This is of course meaningless as far as velocity is concerned.
To emphasize, it is logically impossible for the t coordinate of an object to change because such a change is self-referential. Et voila! It is that simple. No time travel, no motion in spacetime, no spacetime and no time dimension. They are all abstract mathematical constructs without any counterpart in nature.

Once again, what you've written makes scientific sense. However, is it possible that what seems abstract now could actually be reality in the future?

Nevertheless, I'll never TOTALLY disbelieve travelling in spacetime...too good a concept (although flawed) to just add to the backlog of the 'Failed Theory Archives'.
Speaking of space, how strong is your belief in intelligent life beyond our own (if us homo sapiens can actually be referred to as 'intelligent')

I'm glad that you're a believer in some way atleast.
Whenever someone is hell-bent upon the fact that other INTELLIGENT life cannot exist, I like to brief them with a look on reality.
Our planet is found within a solar system of nine (ten for some) planets. Our Milky Way consists of clusters of solar systems...billions upons billions to be precise. Andromeda, our nearest galaxy, though about 2.3 million light years away, is just one other galaxy. Our massive Universe consists of billions upon billions of such galaxies as well. Now, if we take into account the number of planets present in this ridiculously large number, I think there is a very realistic and likely chance of life existing elsewhere. The possibility of intelligent life is also plausible in my opinion.
Lastly, how do we know that our Universe is all. Surely there could be something beyond. Take this analogy for instance - A bacterium, if intelligent, placed within a petri dish would think of the dish to be it's entire planet. The Earth would appear to it as the entire Universe. Little does it know that beyond the Earth there is much, much more. Likewise, think of you or me as that bacterium...unaware of the fact that there may just be much more beyond what some say is a single/inifitely large Universe.
(Apologies about the long read).

Consequently, I've started doubting the theory of teleportation as a result...believing that it is next to impossible to replicate matter identically elsewhere.
Look up quantum entanglement - your dreams of teleportation are not dead. It has been observed in the laboratory to the point where particle A's state can be transferred to particle B.
bill
March 5th, 2005, 02:55 PM
Well the truth of the matter is spacetime can be disproven. Also time does not exist. So I don't know if it's true or what not.
1. Moving in spacetime is impossible because it requires motion in time and motion in time is self-referential.
2. Moving in spacetime is impossible because an evolution parameter (time) cannot be its own evolution parameter.
No.

Well, I had read two years back that a laser beam had been teleported from one point to another. You may be referring to the same. Back then, I felt that it may be possible to do the same with a larger body...
One must realise that beams/waves of light are made of particles of energy. The key word is particles, and it's easier to replicate particles at another place, as opposed to large masses such as human, spacecrafts, etc. Nevertheless, I have hope that in the future, that which seems impossible today may surely become reality.

Yesterday, in Physics class, a few of us were discussing nuclear fusion. Although this only takes place nearest to us in the core of our Sun, it was interesting to see that if the same was replicated on Earth in a more viable way (i.e. for energy purposes), it would be amazing how the problem of resources running out would be abolished. The main ingredient would be hydrogen (available in an almost infinitely large amounts on our planet), to be used in a reactor allowing nuclear fusion to take place. The sad drawback was how temperatures in excess of 15,000,000 kelvin would be required to kick-start the fusion process.

The secret is cold fusion - that is a fusion reaction done under 'normal' temperatures involving the splitting of water and releasing helium as a result (not hydrolisis). It's been done once before in an accident back in 52 (the great year for science:P) and hasn't been repeated since. If someone could achieve cold fusion then I think we're going to step into a new era for mankind.

Dude, it WAS apparently done in the past as you say, but when investigated, an essential item was missing. Neutrons were meant to have been formed as a result of the reaction taking place. The idea is to combine a deuterium and tritium atom to produce helium and a neutron. The neutron was nowhere to be found in the experiment conducted, as I had already said.
The gases required in a fusion process are in a plasmic state. This is to be contained within a 'magnetic bottle', which is in the shape of a torus. Not only is the the temperature a problem, the plasma instabilities that lie could cause massive explosions.
You are right about the benefits to mankind....imagine no radioactive or toxic waste, a large energy yield and raw materials unlimited!

The thread, well, kinda, changed...
Yeah, but I think we got at least 4 or 5 girls. This is a major breakthrough. One chick even read the whole freakin' thread, every single post you and I made. And she was turned on. :Pelvic2: :Pelvic2: :Pelvic2:

You're right. So what is your opinion on the Philidelpia Experiment. Where that ship was transported from one place to another. Did it really happen? Was it a military cover up?

Read this:
It has been claimed that the Philadelphia Experiment was partly an investigation into how Albert Einstein's "Unified Field Theory for Gravitation and Electricity" might be used to advantage in the development of electronic camouflage for ships at sea. Einstein allegedly published his Unified Theory around 1925-27 in German, in a Prussian scientific journal, but it was later withdrawn as incomplete. This research was aimed at using intense electromagnetic fields to mask a ship from incoming projectiles, mainly torpedoes. This was later extended to include a study of creating radar invisibility by a similar field in the air rather than in the water.
The story begins in June of 1943, with the U.S.S. Eldridge, DE (Destroyer Escort) 173, being fitted with tons of experimental electronic equipment. This included, according to one source, two massive generators of 75 KVA each, mounted where the forward gun turret would have been, distributing their power through four magnetic coils mounted on the deck. Three RF transmitters (2 megawatt CW each, mounted on the deck), three thousand '6L6' power amplifier tubes (used to drive the field coils of the two generators), special synchronizing and modulation circuits, and a host of other specialized hardware were employed to generate massive electromagnetic fields which, when properly configured, would be able to bend light and radio waves around the ship, thus making it invisible to enemy observers.
The experiment, said to have taken place at the Philadelphia Naval Yard and also at sea, took place on at least one occasion while in full view of the Merchant Marine ship S.S. Andrew Furuseth, and other observation ships. The Andrew Furuseth becomes significant because one of its crewmen is the source of most of the original material making up the PX legend. Carlos Allende, a.k.a. Carl Allen, wrote a series of strange letters to one Dr. Morris K. Jessup in the 1950's in which he described what he claims to have witnessed: at least one of the several phases of the Philadelphia Experiment.
At 0900 hours, on July 22nd, 1943, so the story goes, the power to the generators was turned on, and the massive electromagnetic fields started to build up. A greenish fog was seen to slowly envelop the ship, concealing it from view. Then the fog itself is said to have disappeared, taking the Eldridge with it, leaving only undisturbed water where the ship had been anchored only moments before.
The elite officers of the Navy and scientists involved gazed in awe at their greatest achievement: the ship and crew were not only radar invisible but invisible to the eye as well! Everything worked as planned, and about fifteen minutes later they ordered the men to shut down the generators. The greenish fog slowly reappeared, and the Eldridge began to dematerialize as the fog subsided, but it was evident to all that something had gone wrong.
When boarded by personnel from shore, the crew above deck were found to be disoriented and nauseous. The Navy removed the crew, and shortly after obtained another. In the end, the Navy decided that they only wanted radar invisibility, and the equipment was altered.
On the 28th of October in 1943, at 17:15, the final test on the Eldridge was performed. The electromagnetic field generators were turned on again, and the Eldridge became near-invisible; only a faint outline of the hull remained visible in the water. Everything was fine for the first few seconds, and then, in a blinding blue flash, the ship completely vanished. Within seconds it reappeared miles away, in Norfolk, Virginia, and was seen for several minutes. The Eldridge then disappeared from Norfolk as mysteriously as it had arrived, and reappeared back in Philadelphia Naval Yard. This time most of the sailors were violently sick. Some of the crew were simply "missing" never to return. Some went crazy, but, strangest of all, five men were fused to the metal in the ship's structure.
The men that survived were never the same again. Those that lived were discharged as "mentally unfit" for duty, regardless of their true condition.
So, what had begun as an experiment in electronic camouflage, ended up as an accidental teleportation of an entire ship and crew, to a distant location and back again, all in a matter of minutes!
Although the above may seem fantastic, one must remember, that in the 1940’s the atomic bomb was also being invented.

Although a very interesting read, it seems rather far-fetched.
I would've loved to have seen some video footage, which should have been sensible during the conduction of an experiment. I would've been a greater believer in this experiment if I saw on footage a ship being invisible to the eye. I'm aware special effects were basically non-existent back in that era, hence the footage would be more believable.

That is true but the concept itself makes sense. It is physically possible to cloak something. I do not know about the transporation part though. That seems a little far fetched.

Pity though about the crew members...(if the story is for real).

Intelligence isn't an option, I ONLY go for guys that are plus/minus my level of intelligence (includes booksmart/common sense/streetsmarts). Conversation is an important factor; it is what keeps me interested. I think a person's sense of humor is also based on intelligence. Some guys may be funny to other girls, but I might think their jokes are lame.

You're right about the jokes. One person may not understand or like my humor while another can't get over it. But my sense of humor is different depending on the setting. So I can joke with adults, teenagers, even little children. Black people are the easiest to joke with. But I have all round humor.
