Shocked no-one has yet made a thread on this might as well be first.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/apprentice/

Silly Mona should have been booted off she couldn't even manage the team as a team leader, simple things!

Oh well, yet again the asian gets booted first. I love her frowns.

That Majid Nagra fella is so funny. That beard phwaah.

Sols can and do, do the following:

incorporating companies
drafting partnership agreements
tax efficiency advice
actual accounts
we draw up business plans
acquisitions and mergers are often mainly solicitor work
offering shares to the public

We do quite a bit in a business minded way, you just don't see half of it. I get that you meant more business wise as in making the moves re. contracts etc..but a lot of companies take advice from sols before entering into them :D

Nah, I mean sales side of the Business. Alot of it is hard on sales that has to be done. I, for one, would never be able to face someone and lie a bit to sale something. :-|

Doesn't it depend one what sort of area these Solicitors work in?

I'm surprised that law firm paid anything for the shit food they were served, I've been to their offices before and they tried to be cunts with us and we took none of it so it's surprising they paid out.

Re. the girls team, I think that team leader wants to marry tomatoes seeing as she whacked tomatoes on everything, if I was offered that kinda crap at an event after work I bet my bottom dollar that my firm wouldn't pay for it at all, tasteless tomatoes on bread, tomatoes and cheese in dodgy wraps and chicken wraps with no chicken in it. How the hell do you negate to put chicken in a chicken wrap? The clues kinda in the name smart arses.

Rocky deserved to be fired for two reasons, bloody Carl Gallagher lookalike, runs 15 sammich shops and can't manage one function. Also, where did they get the bright idea of selling sandwiches in the street? :-|

Zakstar: Lawyers are taught the spiel when they train so they do make very good salesman, most of us are adept at thinking on our feet.

The only reason they won this task was because it was female orientated, working in the kitchen.

The standard is pretty lame, they are swaying towards selecting contestants that make for good viewing rather than good business people.

Yesterday was soooo funny especially in the boardroom watched dribs and drabs of it.

Thumbs up to Noorul for this task he did well compared to his rest, shame about Ben but i swear they get judged on their current task not previous ones so why was Noorul fired? He stood up for himself loads & did back himself up with good arguments.

yea-hi, did you see how she became very brash once she had that boy-like-man-phil with her, lol

I used to chat with my friends at work about how its really funny how everyone you know maintains this self they call professional but it only takes a little bit of something that we dont like for it to go to 'pot' lol

Thats what happens-so often in the apprentice, esp where people from the so called business world come up against someone or thing that is unfamiliar to them. This might be a person or a situation, sometimes I feel it almost verges on someone or something getting bullied or knocked to the ground!

I know in the business world its feasible, but in so many other competitive careers that is not acceptable, esp in the public sector etc...
Hence thats why so many that do come from other sectors get fired so early but it still feels wrong when people gang up on each other and talk about ripping into each other lol

but hey, it makes entertainment work!!! haha

and yea I also just see lots of teeth when the camera is on kate! lol

i think she sucked, she had a bunch of lame ideas every week its well spotted by sir alan, he doesnt want to have somebody that can just talk and always talk and waffle, i think most of her ideas in the whole series was b'lox considering her occupational background she should have produced more viable input...

its like she saw a miracle when she went and spoke to the heshe, why cudnt she just get to the point and get out rather than get a mona'bona!

what i thought was the biggest mistake she made was when she told debra to not put in the pictures and put words in the 2 mins they had....

they looked like idiots, wtf kind of leaflet will be good when its half empty, in this task it was ALL about teh look and not about money... she was stupid and shud have had a more marketing idea... like they say a picture paints a thousand words..

although they cussed debra for saying that she was bshitting and saying the empty space was for adverts LMAO, she did try and be creative ON the spot.

Exactly my point. Kate was too good to be true and to me she was too polished in everything, I bet the reason Alan didn't choose her was because she is set in her ways and knows exactly how to do everything whereas he could mould Yasmina more.

Still gutted that Ben didn't win.

I'm going to write to Alan Sugar advising him of perhaps not putting us through pain when watching the Apprentice by imposing a minimum "Oxbridge Grads" only requirement. Jeeez.

You've come across? lol.

You're a medical student, I'm a business man with a 7 figure EBIT, the people around me have 8-9 figure EBIT's. So basically I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Most of the guys I know either had the ability to attend elite schools but didn't bother because they knew it wasn't necessary. For example, there's this guy who's known through an associate who established his first credit card merchant company when he was 13. The guy is worth 80 million.

The reason I say this is because most admission styles require a certain level of rigidity, discipline and dilligence towards academic studies. But if you've read most cultural business theories, theres a fair amount of it which weighs heavily on the ideas of creativity, culture and flare. Basically what I'm saying is, in order to create an original idea, you need to break free from the archaic values of the past.

One of my closest business partners went to a decent university, but nothing ivy. This guy's on a 7 figure wage.

Look at Gates for example, dropped out of Harvard because it wasn't necessary. Branson was a poor academic achiever. Einstein failed his entrance exams.

I don't think you realise how important and valuable it is to be mentored by a multi-millionare. I'd prefer that over going to an elite business school.

It's different for someone who wants to become a lawyer. And definitely it'd be beneficial for someone who wants to be a scientist or a doctor. But for a business man? I don't think so.

One of my close friends is a heir to a big corporation. He's father is a chairman. He'll eventually take his position and retain his share, but he'll get told to fuck off by other executives if his portfolios don't have any respectable EBIT. They personally couldn't give a shit if he went to Harvard.

Going to university puts me in social contact with individual and their families some of whom boast genuine entrepreneurs who actually do earn seven figure salaries. Larry Fisher an ex RBS director, his nephew studies medicine at Oxford with myself, the daughter of Ellen Alemany who happens to be responsible of the American subdivision of RBS just happened to live in the same place as me at Oxford, so you can probably understand my interactions with prominent individuals may not be as limited as you may believe.

I do believe that going to the elite universities isn’t certainly be all and end all but what I do believe is the social network the elite institutions provide certainly does place the people that do and graduate in position of advantage compared to the competitors. By saying that by doing so won’t confer an advantage suggests that you haven’t attended an elite institution, and haven’t had the opportunity to appreciate what a social network compromised of individuals from influential and prominent families could do for ones career. My mother spent a significant amount of time at Goldman Sachs and she has always said that an application from individual from better institutions will always is looked on favourably and certain major corporations like the Citigroup only advertise graduate jobs, here in the UK, in places such as LSE, LSB and Oxbridge.

Talking about prominent individuals, James Burke former CEO of Johnson & Johnson, Roy Bostock, John Anderson president of Topa Equities, Warren Buffet, Howard Clark, William Donaldson, just to name a few, you know what they all had in common? They’re all ivy leaguers.

Anyway yes it isn’t the only defining factor and individuals can be as equally successful if they didn’t go to the elite schools as long as they have the flare, ambition and the ability to take risks but you can’t deny advantages going to such places gives.

A business partner in dubai is ex Goldmann Sachs. I don't think he cares about my educational qualifications, thats beyond retarded in this height of the game, it's all about EBIT and potential EBIT.

Your social networking comment is retarded. Most of my friends went to elite high schools maintained by illumaniti esque old boy networks who pretty much ensure that students within their high school get employed by their companies. They have events etc etc. I get that.

But at the end of the day, we're not talking minor apprentiships at Wall street or graduate entries into Goldmann sachs, we're talking highly paid executive positions which heavily depend on your companies portfolio.

At this point in time, if you have an impressive EBIT, and you're getting bought out or acquired, the last thing they'll do is look at your education. That's just beyond retarded.
They'll laugh at you if you even hint at any direction towards your Oxbridge heritage.
Why? It's irrelevant.

Most exec related jobs are dependent on your ability to make sales, ROI, earnings.

Sure, ivy league/elite schools will help you get your foot in the door to big companies for entry level graduate or intermediate positions. But for executive positions, your history in making money is what is looked at.

Approximately 23 percent of CEOs at large companies were Ivy League graduates in 1980, while the percentage of Standard & Poor's 500 CEOs who attended one of the Ancient Eight schools decreased to roughly 10 percent by 2005, the Times reported this week, sparking debate in corporate and academic circles. Meanwhile, the percentage of Ivy League graduates at the top levels of government has increased in recent years, the article said.

Point proven. I'd imagine the ratio would be the same and mirrored in the board of directors. Most Ivy people are extremely well disciplined people, this actually sometimes works against them in a toughened environment such as the board, where creativity, body language and the ability to make money is far superior than age old axioms and textbooks.

^^ You both make good points

Pompeii : Agree with you to the extent of social networks and opportunities. Ex Gf of my works at a big 4 and they only advertised at Cambridge/Oxford and LSE. Her networking circle and potential is/was and will always be immense and she will no doubt have greater success at being a Partner than someone who wasnt from the Ivy schools. But this goes back to the elitism these places breed. For jobs such as lawyers, doctors, barristers etc you stand a better change being in the top schools - but for the person that doesnt want that and knows he has talent? You mentioned that example of your mother and what she noted at GS? That's common [as you know] at alot of companies and is what I find a really bad practice. I can give you numorous examples of people that are academically successfull but have the social and interaction skills of a wet fish; not to mention the unjustified arrogance that is so prominent in that circle

I dropped out at Uni in my final year as I wasn't learning anything I didnt know and the stuff I was learning Id never ever use. I am certainly not thick as I walked out of school with 8 A's and a B and A'levels got 2 A's and a B. I'd like to think I have done well without going into figures; more so than anyone who I know that has done the Ivy school path. Looking back retrospectively - I learnt the most with/from the following people

- good stern leadership [a previous CEO]
- how to sell [a previous excellent people skill based sales director]
- behaviour analysing [learnt alot from doing this in general]
- playing on peoples strengths and weaknesses via indirect questioning
- networking with people who have the understanding of business and making money without being greedy

I would say that in general very few actually went to the Ivy Schools - the CEO is a Oxford Grad granted - but he still does suffer from the elite/arrogant attitude that place instills in you.

A good friend of mine left school with ONE GCSE - he simply didnt like studying. He now owns a distribution company worth £45 Million and is still the same. He just recruits the people that are from the Ivy schools and think they are best for the jobs :D. Another well known east london asian - set up a chain of mobile phone shops when they werent common and is worth a good 60 Million and he didnt even finish school

The reason why I am saying this - is they both have traits that Echelon refers to. They are good at talking to people, they make things happen, they will work 24 hours a day, they dont admit defeat if they can see a feasable solution, they like to control their own destiny and be there own boss.

The last two above and the desire to get them is what I beleive is key.

Let me put it this way - I hire SEO [search engine optimisation] bods over in India and some here in the UK; for one of my businesses. The pitch I always get when I tender work is there education and then experience. Have a guess which has always delivered me better results? Another example - IT Software Architecture - same thing - wanted some stuff done - same approach WHAT UNI and THEN some experience. I have nearly in 99% of the time had to go for exerience.

So thats an example where the Ivy stuff has not relevance.

Sometimes people get soo influenced by University and what it is meant to do - that they forget that they hold the key to their success [not to mention the closed mind thinking that path leads to in alot of cases]

You refer to Bill Gates - he didnt even want to go to University. Bill Gates KNEW he was going to revolutionise when he was as young as 13 I beleive. He also realised that going to Harvard and finishing would actually halt his growth and success.

Spot on with regards to the last bits. They require guts, instincts and good decision making based on acceptable governance and a little risk and backing from your network
