I'm stopping over in London (connecting flight) on my way to India on Sunday, what's the policy on entering past the check in area?

Over here in the states once you check in and go to your terminal, no one can come inside near the gates to the airplane unless you have a ticket for bording. Before 9/11 everyone could do that.

Is that the same over there?

Because I want to meet up with someone since I am connecting my flight through there but I am not sure if people can actually go through to the terminal itself.

I work for an airline, and it's the same policy in every airport. Once you checked in and go through security no one is allowed in the gate area unless they have boarding passes or a gate pass.

Gate passes are given to family members who are not flying but to escort passengers who are flying. Gate passes are only given to those who have some one in the military flying out and want to go to the gate to see them off, or to those who are minors up to age 15 traveling out and need to escort them to the gate to make sure they get on.

I believe once you have gone through passport control you cannot take anybody who is not passenger through to the duty free area or the gate. so u have to say your goodbyes before entering passport control.

I was afraid of that, I thank you for the very thorough information. It would have been cool to meet some people from there!
