i didn't add any groups since the purpose of the thread was just top solo/individual rappers. but ya groups worth mentioning are NWA, Bone Thugs, Wu-Tang Clan, Sugarhill Gang, Souls of Mischief, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Run DMC, Geto Boys, etc..

1. 2pacUm, i think you're wrong. That's the list of the most controversial rappers ever. Not the best.

The only people I agree with on that list are biggie, nas, and talib.

And Tupac is fucking overrated. It was always quantity over quality for him.

So no. I disagree. completely.

talkin about jay-z anyone read this article? old news by the way but probably answers the question to what beyonce really saw in him

Hip Hop Groupies Describe Jay-Z, Meth, & Jada's Skills

Ozone magazine's latest issue surveyed a group of anonymous groupies about rappers they've had sex with to get the juicy details, including Jay-Z, Method Man, Jadakiss, and Ray Benzino. One woman described Jay-Z as "boring" in the bedroom, even though his manhood was "the biggest you will ever see in your life. Huge. Like a one-liter Pepsi bottle. It could block out the sun." No dude, not even close. I've got much more love for early west coast stuff, and even now prefer the bay area rappers but the east has had a lot of significant impact on rap in the past. Hard to deny that.

There is no one in the east right now though. Just about no one. Like I said, these days I pretty much stick with the bay area rappers. Most of the shit I will listen to in my care is old Ice Cube, D.O.C, Dre and Snoop. Those are all bangers that never get old. The east's stuff ages pretty damn bad, even the orginal 36 Chambers sounds so fucking bad now. But at the time, East had shit on lockdown.

To be a top ten rapper, you only can't be lyrical but have to have command in your voice, be charismatic and make music that sounds good and has repeat value.

There's too many rappers to name in a top 10.

Biggie
Pac
Nas
Jay
Scarface
Eminem
Method Man
Ice Cube
Common
Talib
Big L
Big Pun
Vinnie Paz
Mos Def
Immortal Technique

In terms of upcoming rappers, Saigon and Papoose hold a lot of promise.

Prodigy is sick. He fell off but check HNIC 2. Pap got 20 mixtapes but need an album. Saigon is sick. Styles P is gutter and sickk. Jada damnn dukes a beast.

Jay-z-People saying he doesnt deserve best rapper alive yall just stunting. Listen to his albums. I used to be one of you people too uuntil I heard his albums. Even an album like Kingdom Come has sick joints.

I really don't think you can put a barometer on this kind of thing and just say; yeah, these are the top 10 rappers period. You can look at it in a few ways:

Discussing Issues/Societal Relevance/Power of Content
Lyrical Ability/Wordplay
Energy/Emotional Response Invoking/Delivery

I'll give a brief justification as to why for each.

Content:

1.) 2Pac

You can talk all you want about how he was supposedly fake, but when you examine his early upbringing and you read the book that was a companion to the movie, "Tupac: Resurrection" and you get a chance to watch the unreleased interviews from '96 (I have a stash that no one has ever heard bar maybe 5 people) and you hear the unreleased songs old (I just got a demo tape he recorded when he was 16) and near his death (I used to be one of 5 people that had this, and then some dick uploaded it all to youtube) and you hear his plans for the future, you realize this was no ordinary man.

2.) KRS-One

Not a single track on any of his albums has ever been wasted on content that is not important. I challenge you to prove me wrong. And he's been doing it for over 20 years. In fact, I challenge anyone to find me someone who spent 45 minutes freestyling about 100 rappers and their role in hip-hop history, while pointing to his own "hip hop constitution" as a playbook/guide for his freestyle. I was about 10 feet away from him while he did this, and to top it off it was at 2 AM in the morning. That moment alone made this decision a no-brainer.

3.) Dead Prez

As far as modern rappers go, no one has the balls to say the stuff they say (you need to hear them before you make any judgments) and no one has the independent credibility to make it legit. They don't have any allegiance to any label or anyone in the industry for that matter. Their interest is black power, even at the expense of whitey.

4.) Public Enemy

The original version of Dead Prez. Chuck D is a hip hop legend, and he basically laid the groundwork for DP to make it big.

5.) NWA

The fact that they were the first rap group to get Congress and social watch groups pissed speaks for itself. I miss these guys so much. RIP Eazy.

6.) Immortal Technique

I've heard about half of one or two songs, and while I like what this guy is supposedly about; I really feel like he's getting way too much hype, especially from young desi Muslims. I'm not sure what it's about, but I've read some lyrics and it's some powerful stuff.

7.) Scarface

Early on I think you could group Scarface with that whole NWA/Public Enemy/Angry rap movement, but if you listen to the stuff he's been putting out lately (like since 02/03) you won't find a better, more reflective, more thoughtful take on the street life that still manages to come across as genuine and keeps it real.

8.) Brother Ali

I'd say he's the best rapper in the game right NOW. Sure, KRS-One is still around; Rakim is still around; but when was the last time they put out anything of any significance? Something that mattered and was relevant? Not for a long time. He owns the throne, and the media wasted its time on Eminem for years as the "big white rapper" when they should have turned attention to this Muslim.

9.) Common

Even though his last two albums are nowhere near Resurrection, it still amazes me how he can be with a major level, and have such a mainstream sellout such as Kanye all over his stuff, and still manage to spit on issues that matter in our world today.

10.) Nas

Initially he made it big with his wordplay and lyrics and street poet image. Then he fell off. The reason he made it back was because he decided to try a different approach (which was what he had been honing during his fall from grace, see the Lost Tapes)--talk about socially relevant issues; be the "conscience of hip-hop." And so that's why now you see him getting so much attention for his album title "N****" and how many rappers got insecure with his last one "Hip Hop Is Dead." When you rile up so many people, you are definitely socially relevant. Even if he's not perfect at it.

Lyrical Ability/Wordplay

For this one I'll quote a lyric or two.

1.) Rakim

"for those that envy a MC it can be,
hazardous to your health so be friendly,
a matter of life and death, just like a ethch-a-sketch,
shake 'till your clear, make it disappear, make the next,
after the ceremony, let the rhyme rest in peace,
if not, my soul'll release!
the scene is recreated, reincarnated, updated, I'm glad you made it,
cuz your about to see a disasterous sight,
a performance never again performed on a mic:
Lyrics of fury!"

there are no more words after that

2.) Big L

Yo ever since I was young, I ripped mics and I killed beats
And I'm known to milk freaks and hit em on silk sheets
No dame can give me a bad name, I got mad fame
I'm quick to put a slug in a fag brain
I be placin snitches inside lakes and ditches
And if I catch AIDS, then I'ma start rapin bitches
I'm all about makin papes kid
I killed my mother with a shovel just like Norman Bates did
My old man in the past, stuck me up without a mask
Then his ass cold dashed with my cash fast
Fifty G's is what the creep stole; so the next day
knocked on his door and shot his granny through the peephole
That's the type of shit I'm on, word is bond
Got it goin on, from the break of dawns to the early morn'
You know my style I'm wild, comin straight out of Harlem pal
It's Big L, the motherfuckin Problem Child

RIP.

3.) GZA

Fake *****z get blitzed
and mic bites I swing swords and cut clowns
Shit is too swift to bite you record and write it down
I flow like the blood on a murder scene, like a syringe
on some loud howl shit, to insert a fiend
But it was yo ock, the shop stolen heart
Catch a swollen heart from not rollin smart
I put mad pressure, on phony wack rhymes that get hurt
Shit's played, like zodiac signs on sweatshirt
That's minimum, and feminine like sandals
My minimum table stacks a verse on a gamble
Energy is felt once the cards are dealt
With the impact of roundhouse kicks from black belts
that attack, the mic-fones like cyclones or typhoon
I represent from midnight to high noon
I don't waste ink, ***** I think
I drop megaton BOMBS more faster than you blink
Cause rhyme thoughts travel at a tremendous speed
Clouds of smoke, of natural blends of weed
Only under one circumstance is if I'm blunted
Turn that shit up, my clan in da front want it

4.) Canibus

Alone in my room, looking thru the 32X telescope zoom
adjusting the focus of the moon
One should not assume the philosophy of David Hume
is nothing more then a subjective conclusion
What is the maximum field rate application?
the run away glaciation surrounding the ocean basin
affects the population fluctuation
on a continuous basis but that's just the basics
The juxtaposition of Canibus' position
the precision something no other has written
Way above and beyond what was intended
the unparalleled malleable enunciation of a sentence
You didnt go to college obviously
I can tell by your ungodly unintelligible terminology
A remarkable odyssey, the rhymes of modern speeds
when the brain orders the body not to breathe
Your competency is not up to speed, you not in my league
you couldnt possibly be hotter than me
Or oppositely you're minus 25 degrees, you'd squeeze
but the condensation makes rifle barrels freeze
Allow me to speak figuratively, ***** please
my intellectual properties are about the size of Greece
Your counselor advised you not to speak
my counselor advised me to keep rhymin until they stopped the beat
In the words of Joseph Heller, "I learned how to write better"
even though it sort of irked me
He said he didnt understand the process of the imagination
but he felt he was at its mercy
Which exploits my point perfectly and certainly reinforces
the reason why nobody's probably ever heard of me
Couldnt understand what I mean by ill
unless you try to translate what I print to film
This is the line of will, the circle of time
the cycle of eternity, the emergence of 1 mind
Academic phonetics render critics tounge-tied
Ive personified dry humor of cum-laude alumni
A wise man sees failure as progress
a fool divorces his knowledge and misses the logic
And loses his soul in the process
obsessed with nonsense with a caricature that has no content
My style is masterful, multi-lateral
I could battle a fool and be naturally cruel
Words of scourn are a disasterous tool
from an existentialist view, I'm a better rapper then you
Grab the mic and rip your physical fabric in 2
my attitude is fucked up but admirable
Different methods interpreted into different forms
from entirely different perceptions and seen from different norms
Not just spittin a poem there's much more involved
there's much more pieces of the puzzle for you to solve
48 orders of mechanical laws
and rays of creational cause, enhance the cadence of my bars
Maybe I am self-absorbed
but thats the effect, to find the cause you should ask my A&R
Today is what it is, but only because yesterday was what it was
permitting you heard of Beelzebub
A tale of demons and drugs, pissy drunk in the club
with the DJ doing the needle rub
Chances are you'll never see me son
yeah I know my names Canibus but I cant help you if you need a dub

5.) Nas

This rhythmatic explosion, is what your frame of mind has chosen
I'll leave your brain stimulated, *****z is frozen
Speak with criminal slang, begin like a violin
End like Leviathan, it's deep well let me try again
Wisdom be leakin out my grapefruit troop
I dominate break loops, givin mics men-e-straul cycles
Street's disciple, I rock beats that's mega trifle
And groovy but smoother than moves by Villanova
You're still a soldier, I'm like Sly Stone in Cobra
Packin like a rasta in the weed spot
Vocals'll squeeze glocks, MC's eavesdrop
Though they need not to sneak
My poetry's deep, I never fell
Nas's raps should be locked in a cell
It ain't hard to tell

6.) Notorious B.I.G.

My man Inf left a Tec and a nine at my crib
Turned himself in, he had to do a bid
A one-to-three, he be home the end of '93
I'm ready to get this paper, G, you with me?

Motherfucking right, my pocket's looking kind of tight
and I'm stressed, yo Biggie let me get the vest

No need for that, just grab the fucking gat
The first pocket that's fat the Tec is to his back
Word is bond, I'm a smoke him yo don't fake no moves (what?)
Treat it like boxing: stick and move, stick and move

*****, you ain't got to explain shit
I've been robbin motherfuckers since the slave ships
with the same clip and the same four-five
Two point-blank, a motherfucker's sure to die
That's my word, ***** even try to bogart
have his mother singing "It's so hard..."

Yes, love love you're fucking attitude
because the ***** play pussy that's the ***** that's getting screwed
and bruised up from the pistol whipping
webs on the neck from the necklace stripping
Then I'm dipping up the block and I'm robbing bitches too
up the herring bones and bamboos
I wouldn't give fuck if you're pregnant
Give me the baby rings and a #1 MOM pendant

I'm slamming *****z like Shaquille, shit is real
When it's time to eat a meal I rob and steal
'cos Mom Duke ain't giving me shit
so for the bread and butter I leave *****z in the gutter
Huh, word to mother, I'm dangerous
Crazier than a bag of fucking Angel Dust
When I bust my gat motherfuckers take dirt naps
I'm all that and a dime sack, where the payback?

7.) Jay-Z

I'm makin short term goals, whonder whether foes
just put away the leathers and put ice on the gold
chilly with enough bail money to free a big willy
high stakes, i got more at stake than philly
shoppin sprees, copin three, duece fever i guess its fully loaded,
ah yes,
bouncin in the lex luger, tires smoke like buddha
50 g's to the crap shooter,
*****s can't fade me
chrome socks beamin, through my periphial i see ya schemin
stop dreamin',i leave ya body steamin
*****s is feenin, whats the meanin
i'm leanin on any ***** intervenin with the sound of my money machine-in
my cuff runnin over with hundreds
im one of the best *****s that done it
six digits and runnin,
y'all *****s don't want it
i got the godfather flow, the don juan demarco
swear to god, don't get it fucked up

8.) Big Pun

My crew puff lye, anyone test the Pun must die
Just give me one try -- 'Now you know you done fucked up right?'
Hah, you ain't got no wins in my casa
Que te pasa, you ain't even in my clasa
I hate a actor that plays a rapper
I'm Terror Squad beta kappa everybody's favorite rapper
Grand imperial college material insane criminal
The same ***** who known to blow out your brain mineral
I reign subliminal inside your visual
Try to supply your physical with my spiritual side of this lyrical
I'll appear in your dreams, like Freddie do, no kidding you
Even if I stuttered I would still sh-sh-sh-shit on you
Soon as I chitter chatter you shitter shatter, I'm the kid
out of Bronx, that'll stomp you to death like it didn't matter
I'm even better than before, iller metaphors
Killers bet it all on Pun, cause one verse, dead em all

9.) MC JUICE

Dear Battles
I know you're going to miss me
Not many have been able to diss me
Through my history
From just Juice to J.U.I.C.E, shit
Conglom local shit with a G-flow, peep it
Just give me a record deal, and I might just sneak in
A few flows, motherfucker: who knows
And we will be reunited; it will feel so great

10.) Raekwon

Started off on the island, AK Shaolin
*****z whylin, gun shots thrown the phone dialin
Back in the days of eight now, makin a tape now
Rae gotta get a plate now
Ignorant and mad young, wanted to be the one
Till I got (BAM! BAM!) thrown one
Yeah, my pops was a fiend since sixteen
Shootin' that (that's that shit!) in his blood stream
That's the life of a crimey, real live crimey
If *****s know the half is behind me
Day one, yo, growin all up in the ghetto
Now I'm a weed fiend, jettin the Palmetto
In Medina, yo no doubt the God got crazy clout
Pushin the big joint from down South
So if you're filthy stacked up
Betta watch ya back and duck
Cause these fiends they got it cracked up
Now my man from up north, now he got the law
It's solid as a rock and crazy salt
No jokes, I'm not playin, get his folks
Desert Eagle his dick and put 'em in a yolk (AAH!)
And to know for sure, I got reck and rip shop
I pointed a gat at his mother's knot
(Yo, Rae, don't do that shit, man! Don't do that shit! )
Fuck that

And finally, energy/emotion/power/delivery. I guess I could just list this.

1.) 2Pac
2.) KRS-One
3.) ODB
4.) Bizzy Bone
5.) DMX
6.) Sheek Louch
7.) M.O.P.
8.) Scarface
9.) Lauryn Hill
10.) Eminem

Their interest is black power, even at the expense of whitey.

nice, legit post.

thanks. but you know whats funny...i've listened to maybe 5 raps songs over the past year. never has the scene disgusted me so much as it has right now.

so as a result i've gotten heavy into garage bands from the 60s, independent label punk, and modern day independent blues rock and acoustic non-emos. pretty crazy transition huh?

you must stop asap. I feel you on that...but thats why I listen to only the good stuff...which pretty much eliminates anything on the radio.

cut out your new choice of music I'm worryin for u

i actually said that to see what you would say, and your response doesn't surprise me. and that's one of the things that disgusts me about the scene. no one has any appreciation for any music outside of rap. people are so fucking closed minded. expand your damn horizons. i mean even 2Pac was collaborating with Alanis Morrisette before he died, and he empathized with Kurt Cobain when he was in jail. I mean for god's sake, he even sampled phil collins.

finally, at the end of the day, the message is the same, it's just expressed through different mediums, and if you can't find the commonalities in the message of the music then you're missing the point of the very music you think is "the good stuff." at the end of the day like minded people cant unite, and TOGETHER, think and act upon the messages expressed in the songs because of a genre difference?

It's like mixin vodka and milk
I'm goin out blastin, takin my enemies with me

lil wayne is completely garbage.
the fact that he has all these dick riders is just ridiculous.
majority of his lyrics are just "insert noun" like a "insert metaphor"
and most off them don't even make any sense - ex "Blue seats white paint, wetter than new rain"

Wetter than new rain? All rain is wet, this line makes no fucking sense.
all what lil wayne did was make these half ass attempts on some crappy production and declared himself the best rapper alive when jay-z retired. have you even heard lil wayne try to rap on a beat from an actual rap producer. he sounds like shit. he can't rap on a DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, RZA, or J Dilla beat. Lil' Wayne is a trend-riding bitch without an ounce of talent.

but anyways, lil wayne will alway be the best at pleasing his "daddy"

i'd rather listen to little brats in the super-market crying for a sweet.

wayne is wack. point blank.
the guys rhymes are along the lines of "i'll rub the chick like i rub shampoo in my hair", and majority of his songs are cloned. he's not original.

just because you sell a million albums, it doesn't mean that your "good", just means that a million+ people are as stupid as fuck.

This will always be debatable dependent on personal preference and reasoning.

I prefer witty, quick-fire multi-syllable lyricism that makes you reload a song over gritty tales of life and blah. That is just me, mind you.

You know how to tell a real hip-hop head for someone who is modeltastic - i.e. tries to live the lives of the rappers he likes? An intense dislike for Chino XL and or Canibus.

Honestly. Please. Anyone who takes the core elements of what makes a lyricist great will show XL outscoring PAC on any and all fronts bar influence.

Hip-hop will never have a profound influence on my life - other than listening and jumping like a joker-jack when I hear a great rhyme I will never be a part of "hip-hop culture".

The trick to finding your own personal top ten, is to find what YOU like in an artist. Not lives, not their fucking mack game or how much money they earn - that will never ASSIST you. Just listen, and give props where they seem due.

Multiplicty, out huntin my clones
Rap's turnin out more sweet proteges than Quincy Jones
My style pendergrass shoes: never touched the ground
My IQ so high it ain't no number it's a sound
I'm Jim Brown in his day, toughest ***** to tackle
I'll leave your brains hangin out like Chris Rock's adam's apple
I'm so rare, battlin Chino's like Africa:
Yeah *****z talk about it but they don't really wanna go there
I'm hooked in leather, floored never
Create more tracks than Brandy and Monica's weaves put together
This to whoever if you rhyme like a daughter of mine
You sound like me so much I think my sperm's in your water supply
With a war to survive I slaughter and mortify
Creating a torture guy be forced and falsified
And duplicated and authorised
I autograph a girl's bra, menage-a-trois
I dont want no men in shit, let's have a women-age-a-trois
Chorus (w/ slight variations)
[Chino XL]
On everything that I love, I attack rap genres..
Fatter than Chaka Khan was
XL excederin verbal medicine sealed for tamperin
Consider me the Master P of God like Kirk Frank-lin
Shoot 'em shank 'em and burn they skin
Blast for laughs at Chino actions
Skill is a blessin you cowards could only imagine
You ain't an X-Man like comic books, you an ex-man like RuPaul
Run through y'all leave y'all stiffer than Ken dolls
You wanna start friction? Play Don and King and..
.. end up gettin fucked like Ving Rhames in Pulp Fiction
My rhymes hot they just might trigger the sprinkler system
Like freaks that Eddie Murphy, call witch you comin up missin
Now you gonna listen?! Or do I have to remind you?
I'll punch a hole through your chest
and give a pound to the man behind you
Killin you and the ***** that signed you like my Dad invented murder
I rhyme til it's a torture to me, exhaust like a catalytic converter
It's sad for me to admit I heard of, you, such a fake one
There's so many gay rappers
they probably diss me cause I'm the straight one
Plus chicks can't trick the light-skinned ***** with the long hair
With Nick Cage in an airplane these hoes couldn't +Con Air+
Chorus (w/ slight variations)
[Chino XL]
Yo, yo, you wanna raise up? Now that takes bravery
I house *****z like light-skinned-ed Africans durin slavery
I detonate crazily, a bomb, military can't disable me
So loose in the cypher I got Lucifer ashamed of me
Fuck who you proclaim to be, better reconsider
Turned on wrestlin and Goldberg was like Chino that's a big *****
I died a thousand deaths to possess skills such as this
With delivery like where Arabs live: in-tents/intense
Sliding in events riding inside of limos with tints
Been rhyming since Timberland trees were seeds; Burger King was Prince
Better run for the fence, click clack on all you rats
I shoot blindly like I'm Ray Charles with loaded gats
(Shit) The fact is, I'm one of them crazy half-black kids
Like Jesus in the army but I earn my stripes like zebras
Without the H.I.V. I'm positive you don't wanna test
I leave rappers confused like homeless cats on house arrest
Chorus til fade

Yeah man. Rap these days is trash. No argument here.

Which is why I really dont even try to get into new artists. I just recently found out about Lupe Fiasco, he's alright.
