Apparently intended to clamp down on what the police consider indecent public displays of affection among unmarried couples, the nationally televised tableau in Gandhi Park backfired terribly. It set off a firestorm of criticism against police brutality, prompted at least one young unmarried pair to run away from home for a couple of days, and revealed a yawning divide on notions of social mores and individual rights in a tradition-bound swath of India where the younger generation is nudging for change.

Not only have they cracked down on unmarried couples, but even married couples have been on the receiving end of such stupid and thoughtless actions by the police in India. A well known story which happened in Lucknow, U.P. was of a married couple who were sitting, holding hands in a park...when police came up and started beating the man, and women police officers came and began harassing the lady, slapping her, etc.


With this kinda environment, you dont expect PDA's to be an everyday, commonplace thing.



But then...I've seen a lotta my cuzzins go from one girl's college campus to another, talking with chix, and being intimate. So it all really depends on where ur from (city or village, north India or south India) and which generation you belong too.
