Diana, Princess of Wales, had considered marrying Dr Hasnat Khan but had no plans to wed her 'rebound lover' Dodi Fayed, her former butler has said.
Diana 'considered marrying' Dr Khan
Paul Burrell has told a High Court hearing he approached his wife's priest towards the end of 1996 to ask about the possibility of a private marriage.
He claimed the Princess had described Dr Khan as her "soulmate" - although the couple later split in the summer of 1997.
Meanwhile, Mr Burrell played down the relationship between the Princess and Dodi Fayed, saying it was a 30-day "rebound" relationship.
He said that a ring given to Diana by Dodi was a "friendship band" rather than an engagement ring and added that she had told him she "needed marriage like a rash".
The royal aide's account differs sharply from that of Mohamed al Fayed, who has always maintained his son Dodi was going to marry Diana.
Mr Burrell, 49, who served Diana for 10 years until her death in 1997, also told her inquest he was at the "hub" of her life and "connected all her world".
Paul Burrell was Diana's butler
The former servant-turned-reality TV star is the most avidly-awaited witness so far to face questions at the hearing.
He entered the court secretly through a side door, having done a deal with a newspaper covering his appearance at the inquest.
At the centre of the former royal aide's testimony will be his claim that the Queen warned him there were "dark forces" at work in Britain.
He could also be asked about a note given to him by Diana which apparently said "my husband is planning 'an accident' in my car".
The inquest's coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, has already stated Mr Burrell's testimony may give an important "insight" into the case.
