A Muslim teenager who was killed and her body found dumped on a riverbank was terrified of being forced into an arranged marriage, an inquest has heard.

Shafilea Ahmed, 17, told friends she was subject to domestic abuse, that she had drunk bleach and self harmed as she became depressed about being forced to marry.

Police launched a murder investigation when her body was found five months after she disappeared in September 2003. Her parents were arrested on suspicion of kidnap but released without charge. The investigation remains open.

The inquest into her death was told yesterday that she ran away for a week with a boyfriend before a family trip to Pakistan in February 2003, when she was introduced to a potential husband.

The hearing was also told her death was the result of being smothered or strangled and it was "not credible" she died of natural causes.

Supt Geraint Jones, of Cheshire Police, said: "Various people tell us she's been running off because she's scared of being married. She made disclosures to professionals in school and friends that she's getting frightened of being forced into marriage."

He said officers arrested her parents after they received statements alleging Miss Ahmed suffered "domestic abuse" and was being forced into marriage.

He said it was suspicious that she went missing "at a time when she just started making contact again with friends" after going to Pakistan, drinking a caustic substance and self harming.

"My suspicion grew and grew and I was satisfied there were grounds to suspect there was involvement in her disappearance," he said. Supt Jones said the family made no attempt to contact Miss Ahmed on her mobile phone. Five months after she vanished, her body was found on a Cumbria riverbank.

Police launched a murder investigation and her parents, Iftikhar, 44, and Farzana, 41, were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping her but later released without charge.

The inquest was told that her body could have been dumped close to the River Kent at Sedgwick, near Kendal.

Witnesses said they noticed a smell from the area five months later before a workman found her corpse.

Dr Alison Armour said it was "not credible" that the teenager died of natural causes. However, she could not give a cause of death.

The skull and her internal organs were missing, some of her bones had been washed away and the upper part of her body was extremely decomposed, she said. She told the south Cumbria coroner, Ian Smith, that she was most likely smothered or strangled.

Mr Ahmed, a taxi driver, said his daughter was a "normal, bright child" who wanted to become a solicitor. She was no trouble as she grew up but "problems arose" when she began sixth form. He said he was surprised when Miss Ahmed, who lived in Warrington, Cheshire, with her parents, three sisters and brother, went missing.

As well as her parents, five relatives, believed to be from Bradford, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. They were released without charge.

The case continues.

The parents have something to hide - it will interesting to hear the final outcome of the case.

In another article it has been said allegations were made by a homelessness officer - which the girl went to get advice from. A actual inquest was made & in a statement the girl mentioned that she had experienced violence over a number of years by her parents :dunno: also scared at the fact that she will get into a forced marriage which she did not want.

All this has played a big part in her death.

Well im sure the reason she ran away with her boyfriend is because she knew her parents would get her involved into a marriage.

They already had it planned.

the police are way to relax on desi assult cases. if it was white kid she be put in care or given protection. we seee this being repeated on the news every few weeks. were a child been battered to death etc. me like that should have the right to be parents.

i do belive in disciplane, but that has a limit.

Actually i do agree with that.

Police will just blame it on religion & culture - a over used statement i think, point is this kinda crap does not happen every day in a 'normal' desi family. But these cases are getting bigger in numbers hence why they are getting brushed over.

Parents think of these things as a part of culture & honour -it's not right but they dont realise it.

if i child makes repoirt take it serious. another thing thats becoming common with ambulance is, if u ring emergency they turn up, the first thing they say is ur mum or dad are suffering from depression,, so they be ok :sarb: or they are seeking attention

mark my words thats wat the ambulance guy said to me on friday night. monday morning my doctor admitted my mum stright into hosiptal cus her illness was so serious.

I tell girls, if you are ever in this situation, shatter your parents' kneecaps with a sledge hammer. They will feel pain, and they can't chase you after you run away.

And yes, I am serious. Your parents should be lying on the ground. Blood and shattered bone are a good indication.

Well in this case it's different - and either way forcing a girl into marriage is wrong, whether they are 'fuckin' around or not.

actually brings tears to my eyes growing up with girls similiar ages and helping them come out of situations without the worst outcome occuring and then reading about it.. hard..
same for guys in some places having to spend rest of your life with a stranger that sometime barely can speak a word of english and WE have to make it work..
and if we are the problem why did they raise us in this "western" society surely in their eyes we would be better off and more respectable from there mother countries sorry to go on but cant help it poor girl just probably wanted a normal life.
May the doors of heaven open for her...

yeah the whole situation sucks. IF this is an honour killing situation why can't they think that by killing someone that would bring the "family honour" right down compared to someone just not wanting to get married.
Errrgh. But yeah why havent they tried her mobile or anything like that??

Did any of you see "honour Kills" on BBC 1 last night?? Was really good. part two is on tonight :)
