I don't think they're that concerned about looking hot and dolled up for a patient. Especially if they're working overnight.

I do know some people who do purposely try to look plain or below average when they come to work, because they don't want elderly patients hitting on them.
Even if they are not dolled up...u can pretty much tell by their features.

Plus...if the girl has real natural beauty...she will still look good if she is trying to look plain and simple.

maybe you'll change your mind once the right one comes along.

Changing my mind i don think so , compromising yeah may be , depends on if she is worth it.

Wrong staying does not guarantees not falling behind or stepping back , staying on your feel only confirms that you are able to stand , stepping forward or backward takes more than just staying, besides if some one s carrying ya you will never fall on your ass and thats for sure, you might not move as fast as on your own but atleast you will be with someone who s able to carr your weight.

ok that whole passage is totally subjective. it all depends on who the person is and what they bring with them. and that especially applies to the person carrying your weight. ultimately, everyone should carry their own weight, not expect or hope someone will pick them up or even prevent them from falling.

and the not falling thing behind? again. subjective. My way of ensuring that i won't fall behind is by continuing to stay on my feet.

Ofcourse every one should carry their weights but bit of help along the way always comes in handy, no one expects to get any help doesnt mean they don need it either. alota time people tend to ignore the very thing they need the most.

I don think staying on your feet ensures in anyway of you not falling behind, staying at your place doesn exactly mean you are moving forward, neither does it mean you are falling behind, it just ensures you are there at the same place you were last year. Infact you can call staying on your feet is falling behind when compared to others who are moving forward.

There's a group here at my school that's focused on women in medicine.

Their shirt has the slogan "Be the doctor your parents wanted you to marry"

As for female docs, I've got no problem with them professionally, but I'd never marry one.

There's only room for one Type A personality in a relationship and unfortunately that's me.

People who enter medicine generally have a Type A personality. It's not so extreme that it prevents people from appearing normal, but it's there. I see it in myself/classmates/residents/etc all the time.

I can see the benefits of two physicians getting married. Better understanding of each other's stress/work load, but at least one person has to be nurturing, and I'm not so sure that'll happen in that type of relationship.

Yeah, and if one person does make the sacrifice and take a lesser career role, there's probably going to be some underlying resentment.

I got a family friend, and he's a doc and so is his wife. They had kids and she took on the role of being a stay at home mom. And although she's generally fine with it, I remember my sister telling me that there was some occasional grumbling/regret at going through the hardships of medical training and not exactly being able to practice her skills.

It's just another hassle to deal with.

It's not sad to have focus on one specific occupation.

People always look down on others, especially desis when they want to be doctors at a young age.

We don't really bash athletes who started training in their diapers, and it's much easier to become a physician than a pro-athlete.

no the sad part is that I often feel like I've limited myself...I wish I had the chance to "discover" or figure out what I wanted to do rather then always knowing.. it sounds strange but I sometimes envy people that weren't in the same predicament.

no the sad part is that I often feel like I've limited myself...I wish I had the chance to "discover" or figure out what I wanted to do rather then always knowing.. it sounds strange but I sometimes envy people that weren't in the same predicament.

Please. The job market isn't that hot to begin with. This is one of the few jobs that gives you so much flexibility and world wide employability. The pay is solid and generally the work is fairly rewarding.

As for discovering yourself, I guess being a female it's a more viable option, no offense, since traditionally women aren't expected to shoulder the financial burden of relationships/marriage.

Yeah, in terms of patient interaction, these are points that they hammer into us, which is definitely viable. I'm not saying it's an act but there's differences in how one interacts with patients and everyon else.

But I guess in terms of the process. Sitting down and studying, taking exams, dealing with malignant staff, residents, attendings, interacting with patients who have other motives etc makes a person a bit more harsh at times.

I'm in my second year. Step 1 at the end in June. Two years of clinics and then apply for residency, which could be from 4-6 years depending on what I want to try to do. It'll be awhile until I reach the light at the end of the tunnel.

hehe desensitized doctors are the worst. of course they don't want overly emotional doctors, but at the same time, empathy and compassion are inherently important to our profession.

mmm i guess its most important to have those qualities when you're treating your patients, but i'd like to think in a perhaps somewhat idealistic view of the profession, that its an inherent quality in doctors to care about people, and be understanding. but yeah, once you get to med school, i've noticed thats not always the case.

States.

Medical school is 4 years. Residency can be around 3-7 years depending on what you choose, so you are getting paid a salary during residency but it isn't that great. So once residency is up, I guess then you really enter the workforce.

I agree. There is an underlying desire to care for others if you want to become a physician. It just get's buried under the stresses.

interesting. i guess that equates to the period of time that you're a 'registrar' over here.

residency for us is 1-2 years following your internship. before you get accepted into specialty training.

a long process nonetheless. any ideas about what you want to specialise in?

Interesting set up.

I've kind of mapped out what I would like to do depending on how my USMLE Step 1 score goes.

If I kill it then I'll try for urology.
If I do above average, general surgery and try to do a fellowship after.
If I do average or just pass, I'll aim for OB/Gyn.

You?

interesting. ours is 1 yr internship, 1-2 years residency, 3.5 - 7 etc years of specialisation.

i can't decide this early based on marks what i want to do. the marks they look at are your performance in physician exams i think.

i'm not interested in surgery. perhaps cardiology/paediatrics. quite unsure atm.

Lawyers... you hang around in an office or courtroom surrounded by books and paper. vs. Doctors... surrounded by blood and guts.

Is there a Lawyers Without Borders?

To each their own. Personally, I'd love to be a doctor. The spiritual aspect or upside to that profession depending on how/where you choose to practice it might be the only one of it's kind in this world. Let's just say I'd feel the need to appease my soul. EDIT: This would also rule out the ordered way of earning money.

There are in-house legal counsels who don't really have the same derivative working setting as solicitors/barristers. Lawyers have the ability to mould their lives a bit more than doctors, because they realise their liabilities and they realise the liabilities of others.

A lot of law students become business men, these people are non-linear and don't really have boundaries. A lot of lawyers own businesses on the side, because they have the knowledge to run one effectively.

Of course there is a upside of 'helping people' and become self-serving individuals. You can do that in law too -- legal aid etc.

I guess doctors have the ability to mould things too and create, but the thing is, they are always fixing natures mistakes and/or facilitating its needs.

The amount of robotic education that is required and the work requirements.. is way too oppressing for me. I'd prefer some level of flexibility.

the fact that many lawyers go into business doesn't indicate that the course provides them with the knowledge to run a business effectively, or indicate the diversity of the course. rather, it is often those who pursue law/commerce in my experience anyway who do pursue such careers.

i disagree with the argument of being unable to mould your life as a doctor. there are many different fields/specialties that a doctor can pursue, each enabling the individual to mould their life as they choose. i will agree however that the length/volume of study may be oppressing to some.

but in my opinion, to get anywhere successfully in law, especially in this country, there needs to be a lot of ass-kissing especially in the junior stages, which is something i would find oppressing, needless and annoying. the profession as a whole does not strike me as particularly ethical, considering the amount of needless lawsuits we see, and with lawyers not being able to choose who they represent in the early stages of their career. in my opinion, arguing a cause that i did not believe in would be moulding and compromising my value system too much. but each to his own y0

Yeah they can. But more often than not blood work is done by the lab.

And you're right, as far as the day-to-day aspect goes. But you don't necessarily have to be at the extreme, ER end of the medical spectrum to see things which are hard to stomach, require a lot of character strength, etc. - that's more so the point that he was arguing.Unless you're living in a war zone, you can lead a pretty tame career as a GP... you might encounter rashes and broken bones but no one goes to their GP when they have a metal rod sticking out of their head.

some adivce about the whole thought on becoming a doctor...make sure you want to be one...because its a whole lot of stress becoming one. It is def not easy...and once your in med school you really can't back out.

So don't just think about being a doctor for just being a doctor...do it if you really want to because its so easy to just fail out.
