So I've been speaking with a lot of desi chicks and d*cks about marriage. It's a common thing to hear that most hindus and sikhs won't marry muslims or blacks due to parental breakdowns and disownership threats. Why is that?:sarb: And if you decide to go against the grain how would you deal with the family?

Discuss cause I'm curious!

not that i m supporting them in their beliefs but since i really dont wanna hurt my parents feelings ever - i wont ever get myself involved with a muslim or a black

well the problem is that hindu and sikhs have pretty much in common in their religion like sikhism has its roots from hinduism whereas islam is completly different from both these religions so it is hard for muslims to be comfortable with traditions of hindus/sikhs and same vice versa

well its true, my parents wouldn't wanna know me if i married a muslim/black/white or anything else other than a hindu or sikh girl..

none of my relatives have done so before so i dont think they'd accept it

plus the tension between religions. Its easier for a hindu/sikh to marry their own because they'd understand and know what is expected....

end of the day, keeps the parents happy and there are alot of us, so can't be that hard to find someone you like

If he had said, Guru Nanak was born Hindu, that would have been perfectly fine.... cuz that's what happened. But to say that the roots of Sikhism itself came from Hinduism at that time is incorrect. The popular branch of Hinduism of that era was brahminism; something which Guru Nanak Ji felt was a corrupting force.

Sikhism, to me, derives itself from the very roots of Karmic teachings, which have existed long before brahminism, back into the early days of Sanatani teachings.

Which, modern Hinduism itself is derived from...... So Sikhism and Hinduism have a common origin [along with Buddhism and Jainism], in terms of beliefs.... but Sikhism itself isn't derived from Hinduism, and especially not from brahminism.

Sikhism, to me, derives itself from the very roots of Karmic teachings, which have existed long before brahminism, back into the early days of Sanatani teachings.

Which, modern Hinduism itself is derived from...... So Sikhism and Hinduism have a common origin [along with Buddhism and Jainism], in terms of beliefs.... but Sikhism itself isn't derived from Hinduism, and especially not from brahminism.

dude, please just shut the fuck up. See, I said please... that's manners.

And please don't talk about respect... you originally quoted me and made a half -ass assumption because obviously you care more about manners than reading properly. Get your priorities in order. I give more of a fuck about being coherent than I do about playing "Miss Mary Fuckin Poppins"

I'd say they need to look into the finer details...

Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, Buddists, we are brothers!

But.... to use the apt analogy, just like my brother didn't come from me, Sikhism didn't come from Hinduism. The common origin for me and my bro are my parents..... If that helps.

I still don't see what the big deal is. I just consider it to be pointless... especially if you're Sikh. The caste system goes against the foundation of our religion. Now you have gurudwara esp. for Jatts/Ramgarhias/Tharkans/Pappay...etc... it's pathetic. My family would probably start planning my murder if they thought I'd marry a non-jatt. I guess I should pick a burial plot because I have no intention of marrying a Jatt munda.

You're right, it IS pathetic because it goes against the foundations of our religion. People ask me why I don't use my surname or whatever. Well HELLO PEOPLE!! Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Gurus presented "Kaur" and "Singh" to us so we couldn't differentiate between the castes. It was an attempt to eliminate the system altogether. We see how well it's working today.

It's fear of the unknown plus what the community may think. Yep. My parents are insanely racist and they can't admit it. And what pisses me off is that stereotyping and racism is something that we all know BEST.

Even if I was to take a test on my best subject or whatever, I know my highest score (all of ours actually) would come out highest on the test in which was based on stereotypes.

Saddening, but true. It's what we're taught most throroughly throughout our lifetimes.

Hmmm..let me just say that it's very hard being in a relationship with someone from a different religion.Iam Muslim and my boyfriend is Sikh;we've been dating for a year now and honestly neither one of us have told our families. His family wont have any problems with it BUT my family...........HELL YA! Besides being two diferent religions we're both from two different ethnicity,so it'll be so much harder. My parents would actually disown me if they ever found out.

It's a hard position to be in especially the more the relationship gets more and more serious :( BUT he and I are both going to stick together..we both have taught the other about our own religion. Our relationship works on the basis of Love, Trust, and Respect. One does not have to agree with the other but there must be respect.

It's so stupid no offence to Hindus and Sikhs but most are so westernised and are pretty much western, following more english tradition than their own but then when it comes to their kids marry someone it's a NO to a black and NO to Muslims and most cases NO to whites. Wtf, isn't that messed up though? It's like most my SIkh mates are brought up all westernised - go clubbing do this do that but then don't marry this or that because it's against what you believe. So DON'T flipping let your kids do all that and expect them not to run away with some white/black/muslim chic/chicni/bloke.

And i admit most Pakistani and Bangladeshi families act backwards so when they say NO to a white, NO to a black and NO to a Sikh or Hindu you kind of expect it!

As far as Black/White is concerned.... if he/she is secular..... and/or willing to accept any one of the Karmic faiths as their own [Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain], then I have no problems with my kids going with them.

Muslim families over here are lenient with their sons, and will end up falling for stupid excuses such as "Mom, I'm spending the night at my buddy's house to watch a Kal Ho Na Ho marathon." or "I'm going to the masjid for a Muslim male youth group, and then crashing at Rashid's apartment."

In reality, these guys dominate the Desi club scene prowling on any pussy they can get. So yes, there's a chance of a non-Muslim Desi girl finding a Muslim guy at the club.

Ah..... well in that case, we'll just have to convert that Muslim guy into an Eastern faith now won't we? ;)

Marrying a Muslim would not be so much of a problem if it wasn't required in Islam for the non-Muslim to convert... Can you really blame Hindu and Sikh parents for being against the idea of their kids giving up their religion?

I know I'll marry Indian, but supposing I had to choose between a desi muslim and a white or black guy, I would choose the white or black guy, and I know my parents would show slightly less disapproval than they would if I chose the desi muslim... because there is a greater chance of either of those two races being more secular. :(

Not to throw fuel into the fire on this heated discussion and no offence to Islam in any way. But Islam is a totally missionary religion when it comes to marriage with a non-muslim. The non muslim would have to convert to Islam. In a way, it is a strategic yet unorthodox approach to bring people into your own faith. I have been to many bars and clubs to see mainly young pakistani/bengali guys luring/trying it on with young naive Indian girls (sikh and hindu). Most indian parents are fearful/concerned about their daughters eloping with a muslim simply cos of Indias past history where there have been many forced conversions during the time of partition and before. Lol don't make me laugh. Most SIkhs and Hindus girls are allowed by their parents to go clubbing and do their own thing.

Where did I say they weren't? Please be so kind as to point out the exact line.

With majority of Muslim they have that restriction unless they decide to do it behind their parents back to go clubbing that is beyond the parental teaching.

Thank you for parroting out which I've already said in the previous post. Again, did you even bother to read it?

The fact is, if Sikh and Hindu girls go to clubs, and Muslims can't because of restrictions..... then there's no way for said Sikh/Hindu to 'run off' with the Muslim guy she met at a bar. Now..... if said Muslim guy is also at the bar...... then he, by your own definition, isn't a very good Muslim.... and has no business trying to convert the girl anyway........

And hey...... my personal stance is, if he's not a very good Muslim, then he might as well convert to the girl's faith anyway. :wavey:

You can get with anyone from any background but as long as you want to tie the knot they have to be converted to Islam. Which i think is a fair enough decision to make. Love a Muslim expect to accept that relgion.

Either that or the Muslim can guy can convert to the girl's religion..... Simple as that. The point is both you and I agree that they have to be the same religion. So to get around this hassle, Sikh/Hindu girls wouldn't try to get with Muslim guys anyway-- which wouldn't be a problem, since, again, a proper Muslim, by your definition, wouldn't be at a bar. And if he is, again, by your definition, he's not a good Muslim, --- Thus he should just convert to the girl's religion.

And again no offence but majority of other religions don't follow their religious teachings alot.

A huge chunk of Muslims don't either. Ironically, it's THESE Muslims that proselytize their religion the most, to fill the void of their own hipocrisy and insecurity.

At any point now, you may feel free to ask yourself, how good of a Muslim you are, if you've had your picture up [which you've had], on a rating site.

P.S Did you search for my name so you can tackle on what i say........as usual?

Please point out just one instance when I've done this. No, really, I'm quite curious.

In fact, I'll even paypal forward $20 to you if you can find conclusive evidence to me searching for your name specifically. :wavey:

And no offense, you talk about people not following their religion properly... Maybe quite a few Muslims need to go back and re-study Islam, because, as I've said, they're not following their religion properly. Right now, in Iraq, there are MORE Iraqi civilians dying at the hands of rival sects, than dying at the hands of the invading U.S. forces. I don't know how they justify it, but it's certainly not justifiable under any verse that I've read in the Quran.

Yeah, you have a point. Is this a bad thing? Being a Muslim, I don't consider it so, but coming from an outsiders perspective it probably seems fairly rigid. But religion isn't going to be politically correct.

As to your comments about seeing Pakistani/Bengali guys in clubs and bars, chances are they're trying to get some and they'll probably have a higher success rate with a Sikh or Hindu in that setting. I doubt there's much of an underlying desire to convert them/steal them away from their original faith.

Read the previous posts. I guess it's a bit hard to explain unless you're a Hindu, Sikh or Christian. You do know that a lot of Indian Christians don't want their kids marrying Desi Muslims either, but give more leeway when it comes to marrying a Hindu or a Sikh on average.

Is this something that you believe or a fact that you have acquired? :sarb:

So far as I know a Jew has to marry a Jew. For instance, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) is a Jew, his fiance/wife is a Christian. For them to be able to get married she has decided to convert to the Jewish faith. If she did not convert then they both cannot get married since Sacha will not convert to Christianity.

Sura 9
"But the treatires are not dissolved with those Pagans with whom you have entered into alliance and who have you subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill your engagements with them to the end of their term: for God Loves the righteous."

2:256 There is no compulsion in religion, for the right way is clearly from the wrong way. Whoever therefore rejects the forces of evil and believes in God, he has taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way, for God is All Hearing and Knowing.

16:82 But if they turn away from you, (O Prophet remember that) your only duty is a clear delivery of the Message (entrusted to you).

6:107 Yet if God had so willed, they would not have ascribed Divinity to aught besides him; hence, We have not made you their keeper, nor are you (of your own choice) a guardian over them.

These seem to suggest, that your Prophet wanted your people to respect other faiths..... which clearly doesn't happen on these boards, as there are many Muslims here on RD who are quite Xenophobic.... thus going against the teachings of The Prophet.

In this very thread alone, there are several. So, Kama was right in her response, as was I.

They're getting married... she's not converting.... both families are ok with it.

What's with the *your*. Plus this is a forum where the comments are posted by people all around the world using a computer and not able to see who they are talking to. Anyone of those persons could say they follow a certain religion but actually they don't.

Are you refering to response Kama gave to the question regarding Jews?

I thought she was. This may be incorrect...

It's just something that I've seen. A lot of people don't follow their religious rules now these days, but the Muslims in my life are the ones that are the most adamant about marrying within their own kind. You can find a higher amount of second-generation non-Muslim Desis that are okay with not converting someone, regardless of what their religion says. And, liberal attitudes like that are one of the reasons why non-Muslim Desis have a harder time fitting in with Muslims yet it's easier for non-Muslim Desis to get along with each other regardless of religious diferences.

Valid observation.

Islam just seems to generally evoke this type of action amongst its' believers.
