Ok I know people can press a lil more than their own weight with a barbell but what about dumbells. Is it tougher to press your barbell weight when you have dumbells instead of a barbell and a spotter.
Who has tried pressing a pair of those 75 lb dumbells. I guess you could lie on a bench and pick em up and press em but pound for pound is it more difficult to press dumbells than barbells?

yea i find it a bit harder doing dumbells then the bar, the main reason is with the dumbells its kind of hard getting the weights up to ur chest but after that its not bad, whereas with the bar you already have the weight there

the most ive done is 95lbs for each arm i wasted so much energy tryin to get those things up to my chest but after that it wuz still tough but manageable

eeeh. the only thing different about dumbbells is that you have to work your stabilizer muscles & you can get full extension of the muscle. i do about 50lb less with dumbbells v.s. barbells. but it's still 20+ lb more than what I weigh.
and I do 75lb dumb bells for seated military.

I would think the hex ones would be easier to bench cuz the plates being so big would hit your shoulders or something...they have a wide wide diameter but the hex ones dont.

do you mean the millitary press while you're lying down?
kashondelivery
August 15th, 2004, 03:12 AM
Well you lie down on a bench. On either side of you on the floor you have two dumbells. You pick em up and then move them way up in the air...then down again almost like a barbell except you got no spotter and two dumbells instead of a barbell.

seated military is when your sitting at a 90 deg on a seat(of course) and you either have a bar or dumbells and you raise them above your head..this works out your shoulders, and upper back (i forgot the techinal muscle names)

I do 70lbz with each arm, I did 75 lbz once, like 4 times, and i felt like i was gunna rip somethin, so im stickin with 70's for now.
The reason for the free-weight dumbells being harder than the flat bar is because they also work your stabilizer muscles.

our stabilizer muscles dont get enough training and so dumb bell presses are usually harder..

Well it seems dumbell bench presses are better than plain old barbell presses because they do everything the barbell does and on top of working the stabalizer muscles so your development is balanced, your body will have more balance and suppleness and coordination.
Am I missing an advantage of barbell presses over dumbel presses. Is there even one?

yeah, nothing builds mass like a barbell excercise. dumbbells are only good for shaping & working stabilizers. but if you have a well balanced workout program, your stabilizers will get plenty of work.

First i heard that a barbell weight builds mass as opposed to a dumbell which, as u state, defines??

85 lbs max on straight bench 5 times
75 lbs max on incline bench 3 times

i'm sure he can for flat bench press.
I do my heavy reps with a barbell. After I'm done I'll do a few sets with 100lb dumbbells every now and again to hit my stabilizers. If I started fresh on the dumbbells, I'd be able to do a good bit more than the 100's

and u know whats funny i was stuck at 75 lbs about 6 months ago and i couldnt figure out why.. like chunky said ABSOLUTELY TRUE.. barbell benching just gets u up there.. i started with that and my chest dramatically grew and got stronger.. and now i can do 2 and change... 200+ but thats all... mayb max out.. at 215

and u know.. ppl make it seem like a big thing but chest is one of the easiest muscle to built if u train smart. lotta ppl complain they cant go up and i ask them.. HAVE U EVER TRIED DOING flys? answer is no.. obviously u cant get stronger...
also have u noticed.. few benchers... when they do heavy weight they always need help initially to get that weight up..yeah their chest cannot handle that weight unless they do flys to build the weak muscles...
My cousin.. first cousin my own blood.. i wish i was like him.. this guy started weight lifting with me last year... started benchin with two 40 lbs... i used to laugh at him... and within no time.. hes maxing out barbell at 340.. im like what the fuck man... some ppl are just blessed with genetics

how big is he? and was he more consistent at the gym than you?
and honestly, flys are pretty useless as far as building strength goes. I like doing them anyway b/c they give your chest that ripped look. They do hit the stabilizers, but doing dumbbells takes care of that.

How big are you again? I forget. Genetics help a lot when it comes to power & recovery. Last march when I started lifting after a nearly 3 year layoff, I was maxing at 225 or so. Now less than a year later, I max in excess of 300 and I weigh less. power/weight is where it's at. I'd rather weigh 150 benching 200 than weigh 200 benching 200.
Flys are useless when it comes to bench press strength b/c you are not maximizing resistance for your pecs. The limiting factor are essentially your stabilizers. Doing flys will make it less likely that you will injure yourself b/c you have well conditioned stabilizer muscles. Dumbbells also work stabilizers, but they also work the major bundles in the pecs. Those big muscle groups are the ones that build power & strength. Flys just work out stabilizers and help you to develop definition between your pecs.
You will rarely catch a hardcore powerlifter doing flys. I very rarely do flys. And when I do them, it's only with cables or on the machines, dumbbell flys result in basically zero resistance at the top of the motion when you touch the weights over your chest.
