India NEEDS to remain secular. If it were up to me, I'd have public displays of faith by any religion in India banned. That time and effort could be put to better use, like economic growth.

First off, sati had a good purpose behind it at first. It was used by women to kill themselves rather than allow themselves to be taken by Muslim invaders at the time. I also have read that the practice people c ommonly think of is not mentioned in Vedic scripture.

Secondly, using three practices you do not like can not possibly justify the rewriting of hundreds of years of culture and tradition that is otherwise exceptional and amazing.

That's true but it started way back during brahminical era by the brahmins. It was for maintaining the caste, which was very important for the welfare of those brahmins, who were benefited by it. The brahmins enclosed themselves into a caste, thus forcing others to be the other caste. The actual vedic practice was for a widow to marry her dead husband's younger brother.There is no suggestion of anyone committing sati in rigvedas.
