Ok so I'm a short film moviemaking fanatic....

I have 3 shortfilms under my belt:

Cops: Tablighi Jammat Style
A Message to University of Maryland Graduating Class of '06 From Pakistan
Bhangra Disaster: A True Story


So I'm stuck in Pakistan nowadays. I want to make a short film here. A really good one. So I need ideas. Commercials. Plot lines. Types of characters. Costumes. ANYTHING.

Nothing is too big or crazy. I'm crazy. I will do anything. I'm obviously making a comedy. But there can be serious parts too. A lil romance. I'm really thinking of having a little music video too.

So come on people shoot and give me ideas.

If I use yours I will contact you and you'll be in the credits or we can use your name as a character. I can utilize your pics too.

If anyone wants to shoot something wherever you are and send it and make it a part of this movie that would be awesome.

This is a big project. Will probably take months. I will be in America too, doing some shooting there as well so keep that in mind when giving ideas.

When we're done we'll sell this shit and probably make no money but it'll be cool anyways.

honestly i think that you should figure out the most imporant messages that you would like to get across, and also tell us a bit more about the people that usually view your films......

I have to say though i'm a sucker for movies that are olden style i don't knw if that's possible but i really enjoy seeing ppl in olden style clothes and dramatic stories like that. Corrupt police stories are great where the hero tries to rise above it all and save his community those always leave me with a warm feeling in my heart :) Also if anything why not make a film about a survival guide to fitting in back home and here in america... most of us could use one of those.

if u know nothing bout it, then regardless of how much research u do and who u talk to, it'll be a struggle for u to make it...
so determine wat u know about life in pakistan, etc and how u can create a story from there...

my suggestion wud be one of two things...
1) keep it simple. do a simple story revolving around a few characters, and take a realistic look into their lives and the intricacies (sp) of things how they happen down there. for example, a family drama w/ twists and turns might be typical soap opera in the western industry... but the same thing from a pakistani point of view (indian serials don't count cuz they're EXTREMELY un realistic!) with details about how lives are lived there... might be something totaly diff. here...

2) just go all out and make something the complete opposite of simple... make the most ridiculous thing ever experienced... dont worry bout being politicaly correct and dont care who u piss off, and about being culturaly sensitive and all dat crap. i'm thinking like a stoner movie from the desi perspective taking place in pakistan :p and all the things stoners have to go thru there... on top of the typical attack of the munchies... they might have to deal w/ being condemn my the majority Muslim society there tooo...? and u can chronicle all the things stoner related back in Pakistan, things from music, hangs outs, etc etc... this might be easier to do too, than a fictional story w/ actors and a storyline and etc... w/ this u can jsut chronicle the lives of a few potheads in Pakistan... and it'll be like a documentary type of deal... :p

Thanks! Olden style is NOT a problem, in fact it was an idea of mines to use really old hindi songs in the film give a lil american 20's gangsta vibe.

But I am looking to make more of a comedy, a parody of sorts...nothing serious, but def something that makes you think.

I have a good amount of knowledge of pakistan and its different culture so thats not a problem. i just want an adventure idea..so ideas for snippets...commercials, news stories...

but yea, the documentary doesnt really have to be a serious documentary style u know? u can just show life for stoners or w/e... and touch base on so many other important issues dat deal w/ south asian countries, (india/pakistan/bangladesh) something like de fact that a LOT of the world's ganja is grown in mountains in nepal or something... and the BEST pot is found in countries like india/pakistan/etc... and how back in the day (i'm talking about the moghul era) pot for south asians was as common as cigarettes now... and that was a LOT earlier than the 60-70's hippie movement in America...

plus u can make it humorous too w/ a lotta planned out scenes, or even well places facts and just show a humorous, cynical, sarcastic take on shit that goes on in pakistan revolvin around a stoner's perspective.... :)

i have a lotta specific ideas if u want on dis too... :p

if u havent already decided the theme u could probably exploit both the Pakistani and American culture(since ur gonna be shooting at both places..it would be easier), showing the common positives and negatives in both places.In the end u can show we can combine the two to get the best of both cultures.

This could be ur serious message behind it..and u can make all the comic scenes trying to show examples of the negative and positive aspects of the American and Pakistani culture.

for eg. show how bribes are so common that they are considered a part of one's daily life in pakistan.

I noticed the best comedies all related to play on words, and mistaken identities in that Three's Company kinda feel. I really enjoyed the movies East is East because of the humor the kids put behind hating to go to islamic school, or fitting in at local clubs...same goes for american chai. It seems like we all have that fob cousin or friend of the family that will sell us out n tell our parents about talking to ppl of the opposite sex and what not.

I think about it, you may be able to put a spin on the prince and the pauper desi style brining one to pakistan and one living in america...something that's been done is familiar but would still have lots of room to make it your own and expand on the simple idea. it also leaves tons of room for misunderstandings and comic relief.

for example let's say Sameer is from a well off family in america, he was sent to india (or pakistan) for a business trip. Co-workers expected him to show them around being desi but he himself was white washed and never fell in love with his culture until (bollywood style) he sees the most captivating lady in the market or whatever they have there. So he gets to know her and sees the beauty of his culture and doesnt want to leave...

Sohail is from pakistan (call center guy who has a decent american fob accent) and was sent to america for his brother's wedding or something. the rest of his family couldn't attend due to them not being able to afford to take a few days off and dish out the money for a ticket n so forth. at the wedding he fell in love with someone there (lets assume sameer is from say chicago, sohail's brother just got married in that town) so as sohail has his love at first sight he sadly being a fob doesn't have the guts to approach her and doesn't get a chance to get to knwo her.

Both Sameer and Sohail have a stop over in Germany AT THE SAME TIME and miss each other a few times in the airport but somehow bumb into each other, realize they look alike and get to talking. They realize Sohail can just act like he's sameer and vice versa. Sameer will teach sohail within the short 2 hour lay over or whatever to speak like him, and dress n so forth and vice versa

both guys go on their way with sameer being recieved by sohail's family and sohail recieved by sameer's and the fun begins

My cousin, this kid from Karachi who was visiting, and I were riding a motorcycle in the lovely city of Multan, Pakistan. We had just smoked some really good seesha and we're acting retarded. The Karachi kid was randomly yelling: "Lund peh char" and "Phenchods" at innocent bystanders. We came upon a kid on another motorcycle and the Karachi kid just screamed at him....sooooo loud I was deaf for a minute. So basically you can tell this kid is a jackass. So next to us was a nice like Suzuki Sheran with a nice little family and a nice daughter and wife. The father thought that I was whistling at his daughter and trying to hit on her. So he forces us to the curb where some police are. He tells them we were hitting on the females in his car and leaves. Then we get arrested.....

What happened next was:

We begged. Sitting there in the dim light I explained how I we were just being dumbasses and we didn't hit on any girl we were just bothering random guys. The people were like we've already called the station they're coming to transport you to the jail. We were like oh shit. This kid from Karachi had to make it to airport in a few hours too because he was heading to Islamabad. He begged. The guy was like shut up kid and wait for the officers to come then you can beg to them. We tried to call some uncles but none of them had any authority where we were.

So the officers came. We thought they would understand and reason with us, but they didn't. The guy was like bakwaas bandh kar...chal undhar! Cuff us with chains and put us in the police truck. We're still begging by the way. So this one asshole cop is questioning the Karachi kid in Saraiky (the language of Multan) when he knows people from Karachi don't understand it. So he was making an ass of him and getting pissed off at him. He was like....you lil phenchods are gonna spend a night in jail. Eat some nice dhaal rohti. Better watch you asses, we got a few gays guys in there tonight.

So now it seems to getting a little serious.

Then the truck stops and pulls over. The officer in the front starts talkin to all the officers. He was like, take some money and let the kids go. That guy has a plane to catch. So they argue and then ask us how much money we have. We say 100Rs each. They take 300Rs from us. Then they let us go. They say don't go back from where you came becauase if they cops there see you they will arrest you again and all of our asses will get in trouble. Then one cop comes up to me and smacks me right on the face and says chalo bacha ghaar jao! jaldi sai.

So we dodge all the police we come across. Any police at intersections we would get off the bike and walk around. Made it home in time and got that kid to airport.

Lost my money though.....

So I'm stuck in Pakistan nowadays. I want to make a short film here. A really good one. So I need ideas. Commercials. Plot lines. Types of characters. Costumes. ANYTHING.

Nothing is too big or crazy. I'm crazy. I will do anything. I'm obviously making a comedy. But there can be serious parts too. A lil romance. I'm really thinking of having a little music video too.

So come on people shoot and give me ideas.

If I use yours I will contact you and you'll be in the credits or we can use your name as a character. I can utilize your pics too.

If anyone wants to shoot something wherever you are and send it and make it a part of this movie that would be awesome.

This is a big project. Will probably take months. I will be in America too, doing some shooting there as well so keep that in mind when giving ideas.

When we're done we'll sell this shit and probably make no money but it'll be cool anyways.

i don't have a thing for stoners, but the ganja/pot industry is HUGE back in india/bangladesh...(not sure about pakistan, but i'm sure there's a market there for it too) and its a subject that in our south asian desi culture, is quite tabboo these days, despite the fact that our history is littered w/ ganja/hooka/pipes and other substances that were smoked....

plus its something you could do REALLY high-lariously but still touch base with a LOT of social/religious/cultural issues without seemin like ur preaching about them. the best issue-based films are ones that are down with a humorous undertone... and the message comes across a LOT clearer if its down like that, instead of an 1-2 hour long film that wieghs the message down with unnecessary over dramatisism (sp)

in terms of actual storyline... kind of gets tricky a bit. first of all, ur using a normal vid cam right? which is fine, but what's ur situation in terms of editing? cuz when it comes to a documentary or anything of the like, most of ur work is gonna be post production. cuz u cant script a documentary... u just take a shitload of footage and put it together after... so lemme know...

pretty much what you do is find a group of ppl who are smokers. i don't mean who occassionaly smoke every now and then, but ppl that are potheads, know a lot bout it, do it frequently, etc etc... (dunno how hard it'll be to find ppl like that in pakistan, but i know theres shitloads of em in india/bangladesh :p) and just follow them around in a normal day of theirs, doin w/e they do, smoke... and wat they do afterwards, the conversations they have (believe it or not stoned ppl have INCREDIBLE convos ranging from everything from philosophy, politics, religion, etc etc... )
but within those scenes u'll have a lot of ur humour and non-sensical crap too as well as the serious topics brought forth in a simple pedestrian way with characters that are normal ppl.. and their views on those things. and being behind the camera u can poke the fire too.... for instance: if they're talkin bout how good weed is, but its hard to find... ask/inform them bout how they feel bout medicinal marijuana being legal in canada... and i bet u that their reactions/replies will either be funny as hell, or very insightful :p
even religion can be talked bout or addressed during these times.... i mean imagine getting the thoughts and views of someone on Islam, who is smoking pot that is forbidden, but doin so living in a predominantly Muslim nation...never been done before, as far as i know....

there's scope for a LOT of possibilities, but being a documentary, u kind of have to nudge them where u want them to go and make them talk about what u wanna hear and to an extent do what u want without influencing them too much u know? i mean u cant follow them around w/ a camera WAITIN for them to have serious conversation... u can start one urself... u know? but if they're cool w/ it... u might find out a lot bout the sub culture of stoners in pakistan... i'm sure is exists but u just have to look... if u know frnds that are like that, then even better cuz then u'll be comfortable right off the bat...

there's other things to consider but pointless to go into if ur not goin to do dis as a possible project... :p

it happned to me... i went to buy a pair of pantz... n i was walkin buy this shop... da guy goes " hello bhai kiya dhoond rahay o" hello mate what cha lukin for.... i was like a pantz... he goes " ah jo ah jo bhai... kiss kisam ki pantz chiya" come in come in... what kinda pantz u lukin for... i told him jeanz... he goes oki here u go... i picked 1... he goes 900 rupess... i was wid ma cuzin... he goes do u want 200 rupees for it... the guy started laffin.. ma cuzin goes... i don think if i told u ani joke man... lol it was halarious... man u gotta do this too..
