Of course people have opinions, but you've gotta look at this objectively. You really think AZ is on Nas' level? I don't even think its close. Granted AZ made some good music, but Nas has been pretty damn consistent (sans one album). Not to mention he technically outperforms AZ any given day. I'm not even a huge Nas fan, I will probably choose 20 other rappers over him to listen to, but the dude is gifted.

Maybe it's just AZ's technique, or maybe his flow in general, but when AZ spits.. I listen in and want to listen to what he says, AZ is realer than Nas..along with AZ's cleverness, punchline ability.. nothing is hotter than spitting on a Primo beat.
I have more respect for AZ than I do for Nas..

Its really hard to overrate a guy when he's released a masterpiece like Illmatic. Its just impossible. Also, like I said, he's been pretty consistant except for Nastradamus. Has Nas been 'fake'? Yes, but that doesn't take away from his talent nor his abilities to spit some of the most technically sounds stuff I've ever heard.

No way AZ is better than NAS and if u say that then back it up with some ill type line that is just plain irrefutable. Furthermore NAS's catalogue of material is sick. I think he may the one artist who is actually up there with PAC'. Dude has worked with damn near everybody. When I go 2 LIMEWIRE lookin' 4 new NAS joints I'm always seein' NAS and this one NAS and that one. It seems as if though he lives in the studio and is always writin' and workin'. 2 me that's part of bein' a great MC. As far as "Reasonable Doubt" being better than "Illmatic" ... again I disagree. "Reasonable Doubt" was an ill album no doubt but the thing that set "Illmatic" apart was that the sh*t he was sayin' on there still sounds just as ill as anything u hear 2 day. When I hear "Reasonable Doubt" I think back 2 a certain era in hip-hop, a certain year or two if u will. But when I hear "Illmatic" ... personally I think he wrote ageless lyrics and timeless rhymes on that one. Just me though.

I really like him among the Rhymesayers clique... some of the rappers on that label are so suspect even though I give 'em a listen. Slug (of Atmosphere) used to be so fucking phenomenal, and now it seems as though he's not even trying. Soul Positions new drop lacks direction, even though I regard RJD2 to be one of the best producers out there right now. Eyedea... couldn't listen to anything him and DJ Abilities dropped after "First Born".
Check out "GreySkul" from Rhymesayers. The group has one of my favorite lesser known rapper who goes by Onry Ozzborn, who's a dope rapper.

No he doesn't dude just rhymes fast ... all the time and people mistake that 4 ill flow in my opinion. Furthermore I would go so far as 2 say that dude's style is fairly one-dimensional. He sounds pretty much the same on all of his joints. If I'm wrong then I'll need 4 someone 2 refer me 2 some AZ joints in which he switches up flows and such so I can judge 4 myself. When I hear AZ on "Life's A B**ch" he pretty much sounds the same now as he did back then. When I listen 2 certain joints by NAS I hear fast flows, medium flows, slow flows and even crazy off beat flows. As a reference point listen 2 this joint by him called "For The Rest of My Life". The beat is so off beat and unorthodox its a wonder that he was even able 2 write 2 it but he mastered that beat. I can't see AZ doin' that.

I say that b/c he doesn't just talk all that thug bullsh*t that so many other cats talk about cuz' they don't have anything else 2 say. Dude is part thug, part preacher, social commentator. He's deep and u hear all of these aspects in his rhymes. Can the same be said 4 AZ? If so please refer me 2 some songs or verses cuz' I'm like Stevie Wonder ... i can't see it.
"Turnin' nothin' in2 somethin' is God's work
And u get nothin' without struggle and hard work
War is neccessary 2 my ni**as' in chains
From Greene 2 Sing-Sing
I'm wantin' y'all 2 know 1 thing
The hardest thing is 2 forgive and God does
Even if u murdered or robbed yeah its wrong but God Loves
Take one step towards Him he'll take two towards u
Even when else all fails God supports u."
-DOO RAGS-
"I know u probably heard the noise
Preachers touchin' on altar boys
Sodomizin', not Realizin' God is watchin' be4 the Lord
How can they do the devils' work?
A man give another man head in Church
Hell it hurts just 2 fathom the thought
Makes me wanna flee the earth."
-IF HEAVEN WAS A MILE AWAY-
"I know a girl her boyfriend was a fugitive
She was intuitive stuck on some stupid sh*t
She called the cops b/c she hated his mother
Now he's away doin' numbers and now she's gay w/ a lover.
How many ni**as' gonna die this summer
I pump life thru my music b/c life is a wonder

I just appreciate hip-hop artists that use their gift 2 talk about more than Bentleys, Platinum, H-Class Diamonds, "Da' Hood" and other meaningless, stereotypical bullsh*t. Anybody can talk about that and we see that everyday on MTV/BET. The sh*t is sickening. As far as AZ's flow I won't even debate that. As a matter of fact I'll give u that cuz' its not as important 2 me as subject matter and material. Overall in terms of sheer volume of material as well as topics touched and on and subject matter AZ can't see NAS with a telescope and bi-focal lenses. Not even close.

I'm sayin' man. I'm gonna go check out "The Format" as recommended but I think even without "Illmatic" I still can't see many AZ joints touchin' joints like "One Mic" and "Rewind". "Rewind" 4 me personally is craaazay. Dude started at the end of the story and worked his way back 2 the beginning all in one verse. Come on now. Plus have y'all heard this mixtape joint he did on Dirty Harry's joint called "Death Anniversary"? Talk about takin' your mind elsewhere on some hypothetical sh*t? ... damn.
"What if I told u that AZ didn't exist?
And I put him there n' played it like a ventriloquist.
Cuz' ni**as' spit fake sh*t and y'all respect it,
But when I spit that real sh*t y'all won't buy the record.
What if me and the rapper "Homey" was really cool?
And we used that whole thing as a media tool.
Would u say I was a sucka' or say I was saavy
If I told u motherf**kers that me and "K" wasn't married?
What if Jungle wrote my sh*t and I'm really illiterate?
And the whole NAS catalogue was just an experiment?
What if I really died when Ill Will got shot?
And this is Will rhymin' now while NAS is chillin' with Pac.
What if I did all the advertisments thrown my way?
And I boned every chick that would throw me some play?
I'd have 2 load another AK cuz' ni**as'd be jealous
But we real ... like those Brazil Favelas"
All I have 2 say is when his new album "HIP-HOP IS DEAD" comes out ... its a wrap. I heard he has a joint on there with him and The Game which is sooooo sick he said he just might have 2 make that his first single. NAS b**ches ... one.

NAS blew up b/c of AZ  ? How is that possible when NAS put AZ on ... not the other way around. AZ was NAS's only guest MC on ILLMATIC and thats the classic "Life's A Bi**h". It was b/c of AZ's performance on that track that he got his solo deal and then NAS was on "Mo' Money, Mo' Murder". Then they did "The Firm" album with Foxy, but after AZ's debut solo album dude fell off ... hard. Don't get me wrong I could give a sh*t about record sales but after his debut joint it seemed like people stopped checkin' 4 him in a major way. And I hear what u're sayin' about AZ havin' more flow but when I'm rating whether or not I think an MC is great I'm not factorin' his flow in2 the equation. I used 2 rhyme and do shows all over and people used 2 come up 2 me all the time complimenting my flow [which by the way I think is sick] but that meant nothing compared 2 some1 saying "Yo ... what u were sayin' was deep and true." Flow is over-rated ... but a person sayin' sh*t that's timely, real and relevant will ALWAYS get more dap. I was listenin' 2 this NAS joint and he said he was:
"Angry like Saddam Hussein
Lookin' @ his children's burnt remains ..."
Come on now ... :hand: AZ can't f**k with NAS. Also, is dude even signed currently? Seems like over the last few years or so he's just been strugglin' 2 get people 2 pay attention and that's another thing I look @. I believe that "Your Gift Will Make Room 4u". In other words I think that if u're really, really THAT ill ... cream will always rise 2 the top. Look @ RAKIM. He hasn't done many albums over the years but the ones that he did STILL have people dissecting his lyrics and marveling at not only what he said but how he said what he said and people still do the same with ILLMATIC as well as various other NAS tracks. I think that overall NAS's career has been as successful as its been [even with some of his misteps and corniness mixed in] is b/c dude is one of the illest and realest 2 ever touch a mic. Just my opinion though. Easy.

No doubt i"ve heard about Cormega and AZ's street cred. But like u said there was period or phase when NAS always in the streets and then there was a period when he wasn't and he basically grew out of that. I guess that's kinda' why he did that joint "2nd Childhood" referring 2 cats in their thirties still in the "streets". Even in the Book of Ecclesiastes it notes that there is a proper time and place 4 everything. As far as RAKIM's comments about NAS ... when I read them I was like "WHOA". Rakim says very, very little so when he DOES say something ... its usually worthwhile. For HIM of all people 2 make comments like that about NAS ... 2 me that's major.

Exactly ... GOD Emcees. As in Emcees who changed the game and influenced so many other younger cats comin' up under them and even their own peers. U read RAKIM's comments. In my opinion HIS opinion is one of those that really matters. I trust and respect that man's opinion. As far as "Scribble Jam" ... I'm sure its a lot of young, hungry, ill cats there but overall though what are they doing 4 hip-hop? If very few people hear them or even know they exist then it means nothing and that's just me. Being ill but only being known by a few thousand individuals 2 me is somewhat meaningless but if u're nice and well-known and u take the opportunity 2 say deep sh*t that even the masses can appreciate and build off of and u do that consistently for like 10, 12, 14 years then yup ... Within the last 72 hrs I've gotten ahold of the title track from Jay-Z's new album "KINGDOM COME" ... the title track from Nas's album "HIP-HOP IS DEAD" [produced by Will. I. Am ... yes as 'Black Eyed Peas'] and "WHY THEY HATE THE GAME" a nine minute and twenty-three second long workout produced by Just_Blaze feat NAS plus the songstress from Floetry doing the vocals. All songs HOT!!! F**k the summertime. This Fall and Winter are gonna make the summer seem wack.
p.s ... the song with The Game feat. NAS is one of my songs of the year thus far. Classic material as far as I'm concerned. I can't wait 2 hear the collabo they did on NAS's album produced by Dr. Dre.

Nope. What's wack is condescending attitudes . People can't be excited about the type of music they like and an artist they like coming out with new material :ugh:? I've seen people post here with just as much excitement about a car, a movie or a Bollywood actor or actress  . And personally I disagree with the religion reference. I've yet 2 see some1 here get banned 4 speaking with anticipation about how much they're looking 4ward 2 a particular hip-hop album. I've never seen anyone get banned b/c they debated who they felt was the better lyricist. I have however seen tons of people get banned 4 trying 2 shove their religion down other people's throats and 4 making unneccessarily derogatory comments about another person's beliefs. Anyway don't hate ... let people be excited. Its simple, harmless expression.

Reasonable Doubt > Illmatic
thats MADDD WRONG
ILLMATIC > R.D
illmatic, 10 tracks of the greatest rookie album to drop. with "the Gensis" the intro to this class!c album, we hear nas rappin in "live @ the bbq" with Main source, off breakin atoms.
"Street's disciple, my raps are trifle
I shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle
Stampede the stage, I leave the microphone split
Play Mr. Tuffy while I'm on some Pretty Tone shit"
take it to NewYork State of Mind. Premo masterminded that beat. nas jus killed it. he shows jus how the mean streets of ny are
"Rappers I monkey flip 'em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician, inflictin composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine
Holdin a M-16, see with the pen I'm extreme, now
Bulletholes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
Hand me a nine and I'll defeat foes
Y'all know my steelo with or without the airplay
I keep some E&J, sittin bent up in the stairway
Or either on the corner bettin Grants with the celo champs
Laughin at baseheads, tryin to sell some broken amps
G-Packs get off quick, forever *****z talk shit
Remeniscing about the last time the Task Force flipped
*****z be runnin through the block shootin
Time to start the revolution, catch a body head for Houston
Once they caught us off guard, the Mac-10 was in the grass and
I ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin
Pick the Mac up, told brothers, "Back up," the Mac spit"
too lazy to go on, but illmatic > reasonable. 22's & dead press. r wiked joints though
