View Full Version : Are You In Debt? Why Is It So Hard To Save For You Then?
SIXPAK GQ

First, I am neither being judgmental, or bragging....
I dont get why it is so damn hard. Or, why isit so easy for me....maybe money management really is a personality issue, and not a financial one.
First, I grew up cheap. Not sure why, I just was. If I spent a dollar, I had no idea when or how I would get it back.
I have been working since age 12. starting working for real pay at age 15.....
about debt, I carry none. I have excellent credit. I can go ahead and buy a nice house and a luxury car, but why? so i have more monthly payments and go in debt? There are people who have nice houses and cars who are in major debt. They just LOOK rich but they really aren't. You think someone who drives a benz or a new bmw is rich? think again....i think they are broke!
The only places I really spend my money is food and clothing, the rest is just basic rent and utility bills.
I have around 25K sitting at my bank account earning high interest. I also put in 10% of my check in the 401K Plan.
why is saving easy for me, and not you??

I save my money too but also have a house and a car. The key with getting a house is that your mortgage interest is tax deductible (but your money would be making more for you in stocks). You have to live somewhere though and renting is just money going away and never coming back. When I sell my house this year and move to a new one, I should make about 10K or 15K in profit from appreciation in value.
Put your money in stocks (more than the 401K) if you can and always keep it diversified. Right now two of my positions are bucking the bear market and the other three are being affected by it (but not to the full degree of the index drop). Get a good principal going and you will be a millionare in no time. Or put in whatever principal you can afford and put away some each month from your job (something like 25% of takehome if you can).
Even with 7% gains every year you will be doing amazingly well and be a millionare in no time. I made between 25-33% each of the last two years though and that is just bonus (my target is 15% on average and never below 10% and since I am younger I can be more aggressive since I am not pulling out the money anytime soon).

I avoid debt like the plague. Unless the interest rates are competitive I won't get a loan.
I do save money and don't spend much of buying all kinds of trinkets available on 'deals.' But I once used to be a spendthrift. The reason for my change of thinking is that I see all this stuff as a waste of precious resources of the planet. We should consume less.

25k isn't alot if you've been working since 15, and having it it sit in bank account, rather explore an invest option and allow ur funds to grow more efficiently

I am only 29 (but older for this forum I guess) and I invest in a mix of mutual funds, one countertrend stock with dividends, and an index fund. But I am changing that to all mutual funds. I day traded for a bit when I was in college so I know a lot about the market, selling short, triple witching days and so forth.
But now I am hands off and leave my investments in one place for years at a time. In case you are curious, I am holding one overseas value, one mid-cap value, my mid-cap growth is my anchor but I also have an energy stock (changing that to an energy fund) for bear markets and I had an index stock (QQQQ) but got out of it before the Nasdaq dropped.
I used to deal directly with tech stocks when I was semi day trading (I may hold it a day or up to two weeks) and I made a ton of money during the bubble. Now I just research everything on morninstar and make my picks every couple of years. I pick based on who is running the fund.
Oh, I am a Technical Trainer/Database Administrator/Network Administrator depending on which company I am working for (I sometimes consult, I sometimes take full time jobs, I sometimes take year long projects).
It is hard to lose money if you diversify and even if you are late to a trend (like Gold/South America/Oil in recent years) you can still make tons of money if you get in before the end... but get out before the end too. Gold/South America/Oil made ~100% gains each of the years I am speaking of... so I am not that adventurous. I am somewhere between putting my money in Pepsico and putting it in whatever the fad is. The happy middle.

LOL, I pay someone else to do that for me. I pick the stocks though and he runs through all the sell and buy targets and sometimes gives some advice on market trends. It is always good to talk things out with someone else. I didn't want to buy one of my funds because I thought it was overexposed to Amazon (5%) and I didn't think Amazon had a growth model... but he explained to me how Amazon was performing and what the company researchers thought of it. I kept the fund and it made me a lot of money.

Umm...too many casinos and strip clubs and bars is what strikes me first, but oh well, i am not that worried, I am gonna ask my dad to clear my cc's as my graduation gift, and then I wud just be left with my school loans which isnt bad considering the interest after I consolidate.

Its american culture.Everyone wants to keep up with the joneses.Just remember the joneses are broke.I know people who are doctors and lawyers and live paycheck to paycheck. Why? 1500 a month car payment,5 grand a month for the gigantic mansion and lets not forget the motorcycle, boat and credit card payments.Easily making 10k a month but at the end most of it is gone. Its our society basically. You wanna have a s series benz instead of the toyota and you wanna wear a 20k rolex instead of a cheap movado.

I do pay for my things though and help out paying bills sometimes like the family cell plan etc. I don't let my parents give me a dime unless I really really need it. Well the doctors n lawyers example was extreme but youd still be shocked at how many people barely make 50k a yr and choose to drive a 40k car.Its even worse with the younger desi adults.Although i certainly hate the jews with a deep passion but its remarkable how most of them have a good sense of savings.Sure you wouldnt ever wanna do business with them but you have to respect the fact that how most of em know how to manage their money.

Personal dealings with them and friends. Also a couple of statistics.Of course im only talking about the jews who live in the US.I knew this guy who was only 55 and never made over 45k in all his life.By the time he was 50 he had managed to pay off his house and had over 500k worth of assests PLUS the house.Pretty admirable in this day and age since most of us have a tendency to get a new car every 3-4 yrs and we HAVE to buy the latest clothes that come out.Although i personally feel that savings are important you should enjoy a bit too.Life is too short. It would suck if one day you were to die suddenly and never having enjoyed yourself too much despite the huge bank account.

i know its just sitting there now but i dont plan to continue this job for much longer..... getting tired of all the travelling that i do. so once i get out of this job m gonna get insurance and use the car. till then i dont know
the thing is i dont see the purpose of me paying car insurance when i dont ever get to use my car...... i m always travelling - i get car rentals with insurance whereever m going. so why bother having insurance for my personal car?

Clothes, jewelry, perfume, food, haircuts, take outs, books, gas etc. Like I said, I have been working full time hours plus a lot of over time this entire summer, so I made more than I need to spend. I splurged on things I liked and needed. I don't plan on doing this once school starts. Yes, I am happy when I buy things but Im much more happier when I know Im saving it as well. Right now the pharmaceutical industry is in great demand. There is so much hype about it but you have to have connections and know your people in order to even set foot in this industry. My bf is one and says it wasn't an easy task to get in. BUt they make good money and get great benefits. You can even make up to 100 grand a year working in the industry for 2 years. But you have to be THAT good. Its so competitive.

Just because some of us live with our parents doesn't mean we are spoiled. I think you are forgetting the fact that we are desis. And to desi standards, desi girls especially, don't leave their home until they are married. So we don't have a choice really to go and live on our own. And going off to college doesn't count because they come back home anyway. Guys on the other hand, move out once they can afford it.
I honestly don't know what you are proud about except the fact that you helped your family out financially. Sure, helping your family out is an accomplishment, a great one too. But a guy your age would have done so much more and saved much more than a measily 25k.

what precios pari said was pathetic (typical for a cali girl response)....every one's life situation is different..and u gotta understand most of hte people on this board come from a middle to upper class families and their college tuition is alrady paid by their parents..that a huge plus right there....then someone who actually has to work full time to attend night class and pay bils....i see kids showing off their cars on this board yet they never paid a penny for it......how do u explain that?what matters is that u dont live paycheck to paycheck....make sure u have like 6 months -1 year of savings just incase u go unemployed...have no debt......i think most of the people in america would love to be in my situation......it seems like lot of people are materialistic here...u know u are finacially secure when u ahve 25K in the bank and still wonder what to do it......if i gave someone 25K right now on this board..i am sure theyd blow this one off! an go shopping with it..not very smart.

I also put in 10% of my check in the 401K Plan.
why is saving easy for me, and not you??

not everyone comes from a upper-middle class family like a lot of people here son. what does being not married have to do with anything? i know people who make over 75 K a year dont have that much savings......i am going to buy goods little by little..but i am happy with my life.....i have accomplished a lot....how many of u actually paid ur college tuition fees on this board?
I paid my own tuition. Infact I am an international student so I paid 3x the tuition you paid. My dad couldn't pay for my tuition. I carried the whole burden on my own. You don't seem me bragging about it because I know there are ppl who have it harder. There are ppl who deserve to go to great colleges but can't and so on.
People who make over 75k a year and dont save up are stupid (provided they haven't invested their money wisely) but that doesn't make you any better. You're bragging that you have 25k saved up? I'll be damned. You're still paying rent. If you are happy with your life that's fine. But that gives you very little right to keep on insinuating that ppl here are spoilt and are not better than you.
Keep in mind. You're 28 and you're talking. My friends are my age (23-24) and bought their own condos as well as keep about $10 cash reserves. They only started work 2-3 years back. Their salaries might be higher, they had bills, they had loans.. But they would be belittling themselves if they started to brag about it. Humility is a virtue.
If you are married your expenses can be higher if you have a child, etc. at 28 a lot of desi men are married and have a child as well.. their expenses are higher. That's what I meant.
You started off saying you dont mean to brag but all your posts were of that nature.

No, its not an excuse, its the way of life, my life. And Im sure there are other desi girls out there just like me. We have choices but we are limited to them. And no, this isn't the 'typical Cali girl response' (wtf does that even mean? lol) But a wannabe white guy like yourself can't comprehend such a thing.
You must be psychic to say that all of us on the board are from middle/upper class. And that none of us work just as harr or harder than you. Im sure there are people on here who have done what you have done and more. Lots more. And they have every reason to boast about it.
You're an idiot, a fucked up one to say the least. How can you say you're not desi? Just because you live in America? You're so full of shit. You're are just white washed or at least thats what you think you are. If you were a true American you would at least know how to write in English and make sense of the topics you propose.
I think its a no brainer, when it comes to taking care of parents. We need them as much as they need us at any given age. They are our providers, our protecters (nurture) and of course, when its our turn, we will do the same.
Oh and I don't have to be in your shoes to understand how its like in taking care of someone. Also, a no brainer. Please shut it with your 'oh I was working at a young age because my dad died blah blah blah crap. Save it and stop being so repetitive. Do you want us to be sympathetic? We are but now you are just talking out of your ass. You have done nothing so far in your life other than being the man that you are to help out a family in need but you're not the only one and what else have you done besides being a real 'mard?' Absolutely nothing! So don't boast about what you haven't done. You have set yourself up to be insulted. And you did that all on your own. You say that you aren't a big spender, well how could you be? You only have a stinkin 25k sitting in your account!
And you're wrong, everyone can't be book smart. Certainly not you. I guess intelligence was never your strong suit.

a house is a good debt. It's not a personal indulgence. you know this. If he buys a house and rents it out it generates income. If he buys a house and lives in it, he does not lose money because the house is a tangible asset.

I am not insulting you but I am reminding you that you're not making good use of your money AND that you have little to brag about. Having a house is actually better than saving up money. The rate of inflation is about 2-3% per year. A savings account will give you 4-5% per year. So your rate of return is 2% per year. A house provides you with 6-10% rate of return per year in Texas. But instead you're renting. That's not a smart thing to do.
If you can buy a house and choose not to do so then it's stupid. Just like it's stupid for doctors and lawyers to live from pay check to pay check because they spend everything. Saving is good but you're not saving when you pay rent. That was my point. You're going on about how you can afford a house or car, etc. I know you can. I dont want to talk about cars because that's a waste. But you're 28. You started early. Sure you had difficulties but by now if you have 25k lying around you should consider investing in a house so that you dont have to pay rent.
Wives who don't work usually dont do so to take care of the kids and work at home, etc. They are not always gold diggers.

well, i really dont know why your making such a big deal about having 25k in your bank and how you get 5 something % on it.
to me, that is just plain stupid. your 28 years old and your paying rent. to me, thats a big waste of money.
buying a house isnt a debt. you pay rent, instead you pay abit more and pay a mortage and what not, but in the end the money is going to whats yours.
and so what if someone who can afford the payments to a new car, buys a new car.
your making such a big deal about saving, but whats the point of saving and not doing anything with it, that will increase the money u have invested.. i.e buy a house, stocks etc etc.
now, if you had 1million in your account and you said u lived off the 5% interest, then yes, your smart, coz then u have $50,000 a year to spend.
plus another thing. u dont make yourself sound too appealing to women. i know if i were to be single, and some guy bragged about how he has 25k saved up, but no other assets and is your age, i would laugh in his face. are u single? if you are i wont be suprised.
another thing, i am gonna back up preciouspari on this, i live with my parents, out of my choice. i pay my way and i have ll the freedom i want. i am 25 and in the next 2 years i am planning to buy my own place, but not actually gonna live in it. i will rent it out. now to me thats a smart thing to do, because, not only i am putting the money i have saved towards soemthing i can call mine. but my money invested into my house will appreciate. plus i will find tenants, it will help towards the mortage payments and in the mean time i will live with my parents, contribute to the household (i rather give them money then rent somewhere else).

So you have 100% freedom in usa as far as i know from the laws. no one can tell u what to do or keep u hostage as long as u abide the laws. i am not white. most of the people are from middle/upper class here.....lower class people can't afford internet access or have a chance to access the internet. i dont care about what others have done. i dont compare myself to others. i am happy where i am today with the god's blessings. and just so u know most ppl feel that they should be able to

a house, and a car.
i am sure there are people who want to show off with their lexus/benz/bmw ..when i look at them....i think......daym, they must be broke now.....

I am debt free buddy......does it look like i am bragging..what does my first line say in this thread? r u guys blind or what? so if i had a house with 10K savings..u would think i am good? i maybe be renting but i dont pay a lot..what if i lose my job or move? this thread is not about my other assets or how muich i have..its sabout SAVINGS strictly.....i save more then 60% of my paycheck , whats ur point? i will consider buying a house....but i dont want to be setback...so i can wait....being rich is not my priority in life...i live a good life whether i live in a house or a apt.....
about the wife issue, thats a different topic....i think they are gold diggers...why arent they working then? what if the husband loses his job? then what? kids are a liability...

waht does my first line say in the thread? read it again..and keep repeating until u get in in ur skull.......age has nothing to do with this...there are people in 50's who rent...that depends on the life situation...there are people who are millionaires and then go broke......not everyone has the same financial scenerio.....and not everyone becomes what they wanna become......i pay less then 300 for rent..a bit more for mortgage..? go do ur research
buying a house is a good debt but still a debt..u borrowed money from a lender..u have to pay it back. paying rent is not a debt
now how many people have a house on this board? and how many people are financially independant like myself...5 out of 10,000?
if i am not doing anything with it that means i am settled....i dont see a need to spend it..i am debt free! i can use this money to help out my family..remember its not always about me me me..its about helping out others who need help..its a good deed is islam...
if i had 1 million..id have some houses.....
my savings are invested in CD and high interest rate accounts...so i am earning 5-6% return.....
u are no one to judge me..i dont care .....remember not everyone is as fortunate as you and not everyone comes from a wealthy family.....there are people who are very poor in third world countries..i donate money there..they need it more then i do....
well, i really dont know why your making such a big deal about having 25k in your bank and how you get 5 something % on it.
to me, that is just plain stupid. your 28 years old and your paying rent. to me, thats a big waste of money.
buying a house isnt a debt. you pay rent, instead you pay abit more and pay a mortage and what not, but in the end the money is going to whats yours.
and so what if someone who can afford the payments to a new car, buys a new car.
your making such a big deal about saving, but whats the point of saving and not doing anything with it, that will increase the money u have invested.. i.e buy a house, stocks etc etc.
now, if you had 1million in your account and you said u lived off the 5% interest, then yes, your smart, coz then u have $50,000 a year to spend.
plus another thing. u dont make yourself sound too appealing to women. i know if i were to be single, and some guy bragged about how he has 25k saved up, but no other assets and is your age, i would laugh in his face. are u single? if you are i wont be suprised.
do u i care about ur life? ........this thread is about savings ....
another thing, i am gonna back up preciouspari on this, i live with my parents, out of my choice. i pay my way and i have ll the freedom i want. i am 25 and in the next 2 years i am planning to buy my own place, but not actually gonna live in it. i will rent it out. now to me thats a smart thing to do, because, not only i am putting the money i have saved towards soemthing i can call mine. but my money invested into my house will appreciate. plus i will find tenants, it will help towards the mortage payments and in the mean time i will live with my parents, contribute to the household (i rather give them money then rent somewhere else).

ok i dont really get it. if this was simply about saving, then why are you telling everyone how u have 25k in your bank account?
ppl who are 50 and rent, are ppl that cant afford to buy a house. how many times does one have to tell you that a house is not a debt. its an investment.
you keep going on and on and on and on about how debt free you are. well buddy, i dont even own a single credit card let alone have a loan somewhere!
also rememeber, ppl that do have debts, can have a very good reason to why they do have them, and for me its much sensible to pay off the debt first then save money.
now dont compare yourself to ppl on this board, remember, u are nearly 10 years older then most of them.
i am not from a wealthy family, mummy and daddy didnt pay for everytthing thru out my life. now i do everything for myself. i live with them, but rather then paying rent to some else, i rather give it to them.
ok, so u talk about islam and how its a good deed to give money away, true, but also in islam, its believed that if god has given you the ability to live a good lifestyle you shouldnt throw it away.

yes you are bragging. you are putting down everyone else.
yes, if you had a house and 10k savings you're better. 300x12 = 3600. That's how much you give up in one year in rent. 25,000 x 0.0505% = 1262.5 is how much your money grows in your account per year. Now do you understand why I think you dont know how to save or make good use of your money? Even if you put your money in a CD of 5.75% you'd be making 1437.5. You might argue that compound interest works in your favour in a savings account. Guess what. Rent appreciates every year so that cancels it out. So you're actually losing money. That's why owning a house and having only 10k in savings is better than having 25k in savings and renting.
You speak about job volatility and flexibility. Job volatility is always an issue. You might move somewhere else. Guess what.. if you've held the property for less than 2 years it's a problem because the house doesn't appreciate as much. However, you can keep renting it out and then sell it for a profit after 2 years.
The reason I am berating you is that you have a pompous attitude when it comes to money but you handle your money poorly because you hoard your money but it's not really growing at the rate you're spending.
you're taking your standards and applying it across the board, claiming that you are the best and none can come close. That is bragging. I am not stupid. I can read and understand. You said you wont brag but that's all you did.
If this thread is not about your assets or savings you wouldn't mention actual figures.

why did you find the need to call me "anpar jahil". See that is the reason why ppl flame you. Now to return your insult, you're an asshat.
You did not have to mention figures at all. I can make an equally pertinent thread without mentioning any figures. Your thread should have discussed the merits and demerits of consumerism and capitalism instead of becoming a flame fest. You invited it though by being callous to all the other members.
You dont have debts but you're definitely not saving money as I've shown you with the calculations. You're actually losing out in the long run. Good luck. You're 28. Most ppl on this board are either in high school or university. You're an asshat for comparing yourself to them. All the other 28 year olds on this board make more money and save more than you. Do a proper comparison man. Dont put others down to make yourself feel good about your own short comings.

well. you dont understand other people's situation either. so stop putting others down. you've had a tough life but that doesnt mean everyone else is stupid. now compare yourself to other 28 year olds. you keep comparing yourself to kids who are in high school. parents make their decisions for them. you think it's fair to compare yourself to kids?
I wouldnt be so harsh but your attitude towards others provoked me. You were generalising it such that in your opinion even I came from some upper class family and that I was spoilt. You should apply your own principles about not judging to yourself as well. you're judging others specially kids who are still in school.
and then to top it all you're insulting everyone else. wtf is with that? it's like you're taking out your own frustration on others.
And if you're going to say that this thread has nothing to do with mortgages and savings, keep in mind that more cash is not always preferable . In my opinion cash savings is useless and futile after a certain amount. I would rather keep my money invested.

well. you dont understand other people's situation either. so stop putting others down. you've had a tough life but that doesnt mean everyone else is stupid. now compare yourself to other 28 year olds. you keep comparing yourself to kids who are in high school. parents make their decisions for them. you think it's fair to compare yourself to kids?
I wouldnt be so harsh but your attitude towards others provoked me. You were generalising it such that in your opinion even I came from some upper class family and that I was spoilt. You should apply your own principles about not judging to yourself as well. you're judging others specially kids who are still in school.
and then to top it all you're insulting everyone else. wtf is with that? it's like you're taking out your own frustration on others.
And if you're going to say that this thread has nothing to do with mortgages and savings, keep in mind that more cash is not always preferable . In my opinion cash savings is useless and futile after a certain amount. I would rather keep my money invested.

yea. there is no one like you. you got that right. you will judge everyone while saying that no one can judge you. do you think everyone else is stupid? You ask when did you compare yourself to HS students? Look at all your posts. Somewhere you kept mentioning ppl on this board. Well most of the people on this board are around 14-18 year olds. They are in high schools.
I am glad to hear you have 10% of your check (whatever amount that maybe) in your 401k. That's one good move. You said you kept your money in a savings account. The maximum ROR on a savings is with HSBC. And as I showed you even with $25k stashed in a savings like HSBC you're spending more than you earn.
So in reality you're not saving much.
Checking account with some interest is not investment. liquid cash is never considered "investment" because cash performs poorly in the long run. by keeping it in a high yield savings account you're simply beating inflation. Inflation averages 2-3% per year. So do high yield savings accounts. because the interest rate is tied to the federal interest rate.
When someone is offering advice consider it instead of being too arrogant. If you want to discuss the advice do it with decorum. Calling me an illiterate "anpar jahil" does not reflect well on you.

Did you pay $16K per year in college? By yourself? I did. Don't even try to compare yourself to me because that's what I did. I covered $16k tuition per year on my own. $16x4 = $64k. I only have $10k out of that remaining to pay off and I plan to pay it off in the next 6 months.

No I didnt. You can produce false information by borrowing money to show healthy bank accounts for a single year. That's all the embassy requires. You can actually take a loan out and show that to the embassy and they'll let you in.
You cant expect to keep your status but that's the risk I took. And it paid off many times over. I have an education and a career. To think everyone said I couldnt do it and that it was impossible for me to get an education in the US or any western country for that matter. Yes, I had to be a full time student to keep my status. That made it even more difficult because I could not work more than 20 hrs/week.
I can't compare you to anyone. That's true. But you don't take your own statements. You're comparing everyone to yourself. Infact you're saying that you're better than most others (actually you act as if you're better than everyone else, regardless).

Several Things: You have every right to be proud of your 25k. Only you know your situation, and if you feel you've maxed out of your specific situation, then by all means, feel proud.
That being said, I want to address some of your beliefs on money:
Belief #1:
The 5.05% at HSBC isn't going to stay forever. The only reason it's so high is b/c interest rates are so high. Judging by your previous posts, you don't seem to have a great background in finance, but you're making the effort, which is half the battle. This rate is as high as it's been in recent memory. In the past 5 years, it's been as low as 1%!
This link will show you what the interest rates have been for a very long time:
http://www.newyorkfed.org/markets/statistics/dlyrates/fedrate.html
Historically, interest rates have been 5-7% lower than S&P 500 returns-this is why everyone says it's better to invest in the stock market. If interest rates go down to 1% again, HSBC is going to offer something like 0.8%-and at that rate, you won't even beat inflation.
Belief #2
A house is a "debt." Technically, a house is a debt. The beauty about a house, however, is that the moment you buy it, you also get it listed as an asset. If the house value stays the same or increases, as you pay down your mortgage, you're getting an increase in assets! Of course, the obvious catch here is that the house value has to appreciate (or at least beat inflation). So, in a highly speculative market, you would get hurt, but, SixPack, you live in Texas. As a fellow resident in Texas, let me tell you something you already know about Texas- it's fucking big. Houston right? how many suburbs does Houston have? a billion? All this land means that there's always space to put more houses, which basically protects us from wild house price swings. For instance, in this latest "housing bubble," houses in Texas really only appreciated 10-15% (as opposed to Cali, but you can ask your brother about that). Conversely, we won't drop as much either. Bottom line: A house, especially in Texas, is a stable investment.
Belief #3:
Most of America is in credit card debt.
This is actually a falsehood created with statistics. They usually present it as "the AVERAGE american household is something like $2000 in debt." In actuality, the median American household isn't doing that badly. If I recall correctly, it's somewhere around 0.
Belief #4:
Savings is "easy"
Certain cities are ridiculous. London, for instance, is outrageous. I don't know how anyone can live there. New York is also similiar. We haven't easy, not living in major metropolitan areas. New York for example, has the federal income tax, a state tax, a New York City tax, and a sales tax! That's unfreaking believable. You can't even get a pizza for less than $20!
I've gotten the feeling from all your posts that I've read that you're extremely risk-averse. While you are successful right now with the current economy, when it turns around, you're going to be sitting at the bottom of the pile. The financial strategies that you employ fly in the face of what every decent financial advisor would tell someone that's 28 years old. I'm not saying you should go crazy, but with everything in life, you should be able to find a happy medium.

feds have increased the interest rates again..its going up to 6%...so lingering around 5% will stay for a quite a while.....CD's are will be around that much also for a long time...emigrant direct raised theirs to 5.15% today. u are right..i dont have a good background in finance. but i know how to take care of my money. most people in usa live paycheck to paycheck whether they have other huge assets/investments or not.....i play my money very safe. i am not a risk taker either....i know people who do max out their credit cards and are unable to pay their bills..i dont even have any debt.
stock market is risky. remember i play my money safe...which means cd's and high yield money markets/savings....Bonds is another good idea. 401K is good b/c i get free money from my company.
a house is debt but a good investment nevertheless even if the house does not appreciate. i will get all that money back that i put in for mortgage when i sell it. and u get other tax benefits...i can buy the same house thats in cali for more then half the price in texas . cost of living vs salary comparison in cali and ny are ridiculous....

a house is a good debt. It's not a personal indulgence. you know this. If he buys a house and rents it out it generates income. If he buys a house and lives in it, he does not lose money because the house is a tangible asset.
i dont think any debts are good its a trap to get you to pay more then you have to, but thats neither here no there. All Im saying is that if you "personally" think its manageable to have a mortgage you can afford then go
right ahead, its a personal decision.
The world is a changing place and not everything is as it seems.
Many people from LA cant beat the home owners insurance to
get a new a house. A house can easily lose value and appeal.
I say if u do get a property get a nice one in a popular upscale area.

reason is some ppl get more out of a car

I would think you would have more common sense than this...being sued doesn't mean you'll lose. And no, you won't necessarily end up in jail. And no, the doctor doesn't lose his/her job if they get sued.
How can you pride yourself on being better than everyone else if you don't even know how our justice system works? How can you even make comparisons to any other job when you lack the knowledge to understand the fundamental systems of our society?

no, it's completely on topic and completely valid to the previous posts. You're the one that said a doc will lose his/her job if they get sued and that the field isn't secure. I simply told you that it doesn't work because that is not how our system works which therefore negates any validity to any of the arguments you have currently posed.

well there is no guarantee between a company and its employee either. as far as i know there is not distinction between a doctor over any other employee working for an employer. if a doctor messes up he gets sued, loses and gets sacked..
same goes for a company hiring a professional.. the probability is the same. some hospitals may not fire the doctor and some will.. same goes for a lawyer, engineer or any other professional.

usually most doctors dont lose their jobs after the first lawsuit.. insurance covers malpractice.. usually if the doctor is tenured he is almost never kicked out..

Of course when you die you don't take any assets with you, whats the point in having money in the bank earning high intrest then?
Your not taking that to the grave with you are you?
Risk is what differentiates a successful business man from the average man.
On the same note, success doesn’t make a man, failure does!
So if you fail in something you do, don’t give up, keep working at it and learn from your mistakes, that’s what I did and can say I’m very comfortable now.
This is what you said
“You think someone who drives a benz or a new bmw is rich? think again....i think they are broke! “
Not really true, if that is what you say to make yourself feel better then carry on thinking that.
You got guys with new cars that are loaded and those who have probably financed it and probably are broke, but I got respect for them guys, they live life, they enjoy it and they take risks and finally they succeed.
Sounds like you are live a very boring life “The only places I really spend my money is food and clothing, the rest is just basic rent and utility bills.” What’s the point of having a high interest account??
Go treat yourself to a convertible or something let your hair down, chill out and take that cock out your ass because it seems to be pushing the shit from your mouth!
But if your content doing that that carry on doing so!
