i dont think the number of goals scored has anythin to do with his skills...he is experienced and so tries not to be greedy and give the others a chance at it ...

On set pieces he's pretty good. He's not a striker, he's more of a playmaker. Plus he's got a good eye across the whole pitch.

June 28th, 2006, 12:43 PM
he's not a striker, and watever role he does play is pretty good, that one goal was an amazing goal for this World Cup and he's played alot better than most of the players on the English squad.

Oh and World Player of the Year RONALDINHO is yet to score.

A very over rated player. The most famous footballer in the world, but will never be able to call himself a great one. He is a specialist at free kicks, but still not the best in the world at them. Pesonally i think he sold out a bit, marry that whore didnt do much good for his career either.

Do you watch soccer in general buddy? Do you play soccer ? Do you know anything about soccer ?
Beckham is NOT an offensive midfielder, Lampard and Gerrard are... There the ones who pull the trigger usually outside the 18 yard box. England plays a 4-4-2 formation. The idea of the formation is for your 2 outside mindfielders, Cole/Beckham, is to play Header/Cross game to the strikers inside the box (Owen/Crouch/Rooney). There job is to architect plays, and goals ...
If you watch England you'll notice how accurate beckhams free kicks(scored on one, setup a few) corners and crosses are. He is a phenominal player, much more technical compared to Ronaldhinio, Robben, Kaka or C.Ronaldo... but does his job very well.

No one said that Beckham is the best soccer player in the world, his face sells more than his skill which makes him popular. No one can deny that he's not a good looking guy and thats how he gained his popularity. But, he's not a terrible soccer player either, he's actually really good, at least in my opinion.
Oh yeah, and I dont think who he married has anything to do with his skill.

You clearly dont know what ur talking about.
1. The thread is about him as a footballer. Therefore, whats looks got to do with it, ur a girl, right?
2. Marrying that whore, (who used to go shopping and leave Beckham at home (when he should be at training) to look after the kids) didnt do wonders for the relationship with his manager. She also is the one who made his image into what it is. The guy couldnt even dress before he met her. + the move to Madrid...(where he has yet to win a medal) was influenced by her. She clearly has no talent and needs a popular man to consider heself a sucess. She even used to go out with a player from the same team, who at the time was the golden balls of English football. Hmmm....Gold digger, me thinks so.

actually, the tread is about his 'over-ratedness', and the question presented was, what makes him so popular.
no, i'm not a girl...lol
I find it hard to believe that someone like Beckham couldnt hire a nanny for the kids. I do agree though that she did mess up his career, but he's still not a bad player, and he is making more money now, doing endorsements than before.

I think he's over-rated as well, but not in the sense that his scoring abilities suck or he's a terrible player. I think he's a pretty good player, a tactical one that makes free kicks look beautiful. I dont think he's the best player, nor is he anywhere close to being the best player, even for England, but he's good.

I agree that he is over hyped, but i think people are starting to realise that now.
However your reasoning for why he is overhyped does not makes sense.
"he has scored just one goal"
And.....? Hes a midfielder, not a striker. He is not judged purely on the number of goals he scores. Let me guess, are you a yank?
By your logic, Ronaldinho is shit, as he is yet to score a goal... No.

fuck off you elmer fudd look a like cunt. your knowledge of sports is quite elementary. the media has been on becks case as they expect him to be the top player in the squad but hes past his prime but yet hes still has the vision to see the entire pitch and provide accurate long balls and he is still defensively reliable. you think b/c he doesn't pot a goal a game hes not a decent player? fuck off. he has strong leadership qualities, is a top3 set piece taker and although he doesn't have the strongest athletic abilities, he drops back and forward on point. same can't be said for franky lampard this world cup.

Yes they are total Crap. I think Maradona and Pele both missed shots once. They are total crap too.
Gert Muller is crap too, He is only 2nd in the World Cup All time top goal Scorers league.
Roberto Baggio missed a pen in 1994. Total shit.
Shevchenko Missed his pen on Monday.....Waste of £30 million.

My my my, another yank that can't help but just run their mouth. Football is not all about scoring goals it's about creating them, defending them etc.
Rather than looking at what he isn't doing why don't we try looking more at what he is doing?
You still have to keep him on the pitch for those dangerously placed free kicks in and around the penalty area, moments of brilliances like that can change a game, one good delivery, one exceptionally judged free kick; these can make all the difference. (just like it did against Ecuador)
I don't look at stupid statistics, if we were to look at statistics the whole England team may come under scrutiny, Lampard has been looking less than convincing in all the games and I haven’t seen anyone slagging him off anywhere near as much as people are David Beckham. It’s quite ridiculous, all because of who he is.
If you remember back to his Mancher United years, and the good old Beckham Yorke combination, his delivery was consistantly superb then, now it's just superb on a more eratic basis.
It's just like Figo for Portugal, Ronaldo for Brazil and Zidane for France.
Everyone knows their not as good as they used to be, mainly because they are all past their peak but they can still deliver at highest level.
PS: If you Americans haven't seen much of David Beckham before fame all got to his head take a look at this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIclFfGk5No&search=David%20Beckham%20
