I'm thinking of doing a concurrent MD/MBA degree program. An MBA can only help.

Typical route entails: Degree, professional qualifications (2-3 years) and then 3-5yrs more work, then to make that transition to director level then do the MBA......way too early to think about such things.....but MBA will only mean anything from higher institutions, sad but true.

For recruiting, getting into a top MBA program is important, but if you plan on getting a MBA to start your own business, I believe you can go to any school.

I didn't say you NEED a MBA to start a business. I said if you plan on getting a MBA to start a business. I have friends who work in the software industry for a number of years, but want to leave and start their own business but feel they have no knowledge of business world and decide they want to get a MBA.

here's the beautiful thing...in this program I can get that MBA as fast or as slow as I want. I can complete the course work in 2 years or 4 years. doesn't an MBA take 2 years to begin with at regular pace?

An MBA wont teach you the fundamentals and runnings of small businesses, that sort of stuff only comes from experience, rather management and profit strategies of medium-large sized business, which starts relating to share capital and roll-out strategies of making a profit instead of normal turnover minus overhead profits. Theres probably very very few people who start theyre own business which reach to the level where the MBA may come in any use. but by the time you get there you should be able to employ youre own team of MBA-equipped executives anyway!

I know at Harvard, and I think it goes for most schools, if you want to do a dual degree, you got to apply to both schools and take both entrance exams. So, if you want a MBA and a JD you would apply to HBS and Harvard Law take the GMAT and LSAT and graduate in 5 years ( 2 for MBA, 3 for laws).

An MBA won't teach you the fundamentals of running a business?? You forget that a small business is a BUSINESS. It doesn't matter if you are large or small. It comes down to making money. The fact is 35% of small businesses fail. The reason why, according to a report by Duns and Brandston, is a lack of knowledge: http://www.sbaer.uca.edu/research/asbe/2004_fall/16.pdf.
You have people who think they can compete against Wal-Mart based on price, but fail to realize that Wal-Mart uses the cost leadership strategy (Developed by Michael Porter) meaning Wal-Mart's whole organization structure and culture is based on being a cost leader.
I don't expect the guy selling coffee out of a stand to have a MBA, but a person thinking of starting a software company does need business knowledge and they need to know things like the 4 P's of marketing, Product life cycles, the five forces of competition, Porter's business level strategies, doing a SWOT analysis, understanding the Balance scorecard etc..

I'm guessing it would help with setting up a solo or group practice. Even then, with some sound business-mindedness, that shouldn't really be a problem if I didn't get an MBA.
I've heard of financiers saying "go after doctors" because they get big-headed and because of the intensity of the course work, they don't have time to dabble in the arts of business and ultimately have no fiscal sense. I most definitely don't want to be taken advantage of by some slick business-type, so I play their game and learn their secrets.
I'm starting out by reading the WSJ.

Yeah, it's probably too much work anyway. I guess it just takes common sense to start a business, right?

I advise you to do a MD, only if you have passion for medicine. If you don't passion for it then try to go to a good business school

I was talking about starting a business in terms of opening up a medical practice, either group or solo. If people do their homework and spend a little time carefully reviewing the pros and cons to an investment, earning money shouldn't really be a problem, I don't think. Perhaps business school is not a necessity?

you don't need a MBA to open up your own practice. You should open up your own practice when you have enough experience.

You don't need to do a full time MBA. You can earn an Executive MBA. I believe those programs are 16 months.

Alot of that doesn't need to be taught to you, it's just an extension of common sense or business sense....an MBA to me is more about the people i introduced to and get in contact with for the future.......
