I'm thinking of changing my ISP to Be Broadband.

They offer 24 MB bradband for £24, which is what I pay for my 2 MB connection right now. The download rates are not what bothers me, although it is an added bonus. What I do need is faster upload speeds, because I only have 256 KB right now, and they offer 1.3 MB I think?

Question is... Any of you guys use Be? If you do, could you give me some feedback on the quality of their service. I'm not interested in any extras, I don't even care for the wireless router that they give free because I have my own. I'm talking about download/upload rates and reliability of connection, since I don't want to be continuously disconnected from their service!

Any comments will be appreciated.

Not fast enough.

The good thing about Be is that I don't have a 12 months contract if I sign up. Only have to tell them 3 months in advance and then I can go. So if a new ISP with a better offer comes up, I can change to them. Be and UK online are the only ones that I know of that offer very high broadband. UK Online offer 22 MB connection... But with both, the speed depends on how far you are from the interchange. I should be able to get near 20 MB since I'm within 1 km from the nearest telephone exchange (infact I have 3 around me that are all within 1km).

Do I have to close all my uploads/downloads. My internet goes through a wireless router that is shared between two computers and my dad is using the other one right now.

Well if you want to know speeds then I can tell you exactly, since I always have things going on my PC.

My current maximum download speed is about 230 Kb/s which is about 1.8 MB

My current maximum uploads are about 30 Kb/s which is about 240 KB

It's the uploads that piss me off though. Too slow. Downloads I don't mind waiting a little bit but that ISP offers ideally what I would want.

I ran your tests with everything on my computer still running and got the following results.

Communications: 986.1 kilobits per second
Storage: 120.4 kilobytes per second
1MB file download: 8.5 seconds
Subjective rating: Good

From what I’ve heard Be Broadband and UKonline may offer high speed internet but in contrast you experience a high volume of problems, apparently. This in combination to poor customer service I’ve been told to stay away.

I’m with AOL at the moment and their charges are just ridiculous, £30 for speeds varying between 2-8MG.

Anyway can anybody verify my initial statement? Also do Be&UKonline have download limits?

No they have no 'download limits' but they have a fair user policy. They will warn you if they think you are overusing their services, although they do not say how much that is. For the speeds they offer, I can't see them setting any limits too low. Maybe if they think you are using a home conection for business then they will warn you?

I'm reading about any problems and there is not much spoken about them. Generally they tend to be okay, and they are on par (in some cases better) than my current ISP. Customer services are abroad but I doubt that if the service works I will ever need to call them up (I haven't called my current one that I've been with for over 18 months).

I'd warn you away from AOL though. That price is TOO much. Anal rapeage?
