WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An ongoing military investigation supports allegations that U.S. Marines in November killed 24 innocent Iraqi civilians without being provoked, senior Pentagon sources said Friday.
Charges, including murder, could soon be filed against Marines allegedly involved, the sources said.
The killings reportedly occurred while troops from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines were searching for insurgents who planted a roadside bomb that killed a member of the unit.
The Marines originally had reported that 15 civilians were killed by a roadside bomb in Haditha, a city along the Euphrates River in western Iraq. The Marines later suggested the civilians may have been caught in a firefight.
However, photographs being reviewed by investigators "are inconsistent with how the Marines claim the Iraqis died," according to a military source familiar with the investigation. (Watch the Pentagon investigate civilian deaths -- 2:25)
An Iraqi human rights group, Hammurabi Human Rights Association, caught the scene on video, which was obtained by Time magazine. A criminal investigation ensued. Time Warner is the parent company of Time magazine and CNN.

are you kidding me? ask him to tell you the gruesome stories about what they do to their own people over there daily. no wait, that would put isolated stories like this to shame and make Marines look like innocent puppies thus defeating the purpose of the thread. not to mention the fact that it would take one hell of a long time to tell them all and they would truly horrify everyone. silly me.
and are you people even aware of what Kamran's job actually is?

the war didnt trigger this civil war......troops went in to remove saddam from power which they did.........what started the civl war was sunnis who were pissed that they just lost power targeting shias.....and now shia are taking there revenge on sunnis......and back and forth...back and forth......and because of this civil war.....US troops arent gonna leave cause that would make an even bigger power vacuum
so until the religious nuts stop there infighting......only two things will change......the number of US troops killed with rise....and the number of civilians killed by soilders and militants will rise

Iraq was attacked under false pretenses, many civilians have died as a result of this illegtimate war and continue to do so. If you're not willing to acknowledge these facts, then you must be living under a rock or suffering from tunnel vision. Whatever you might think of the initial invasion, now that its done, the current situation is probably better off with the troops there. If they pulled out, a full blown civil war is guaranteed.

lol madman? lay off the rhetoric will ya? Im sure your aware of the fact that there are and were many ruthless rulers out there ,out which some have been supported and sustained by the US. Saddam is a saint compared to Pinochet, Suharto et al (which were supported by the U.S). all those kids that saw there friends getting killed will be angry at the americans...they will forget about any and all abuses commited by Saddams men and will only remember that it was Americans that killed there parents and there friends...........and yes its likly they will pick up arms when they are of age.....and thats really the sad fact......this group of american soliders that commited this terrorist act on civilians should be punished to the max so that it sets and example to other troops that such actions will no go unpunished

Right.
I'm sure the future generations of Iraq have much to be thankful for. Are you aware of the exponential increase in birth defects resulting from DU munitions that these so-called liberators use? I'm a little shocked if that's your view of a "better off" situation.
Its better because there's still some semblance of control. There are a half a dozen examples of the ruin a civil war causes that can still be seen in various parts of the world. There's close to zero chance that a government can be established and be able to govern without the help of a military force. They don't have one. And the shi'ia sunni rift is deep enough for the idea of a joint government to be unrealistic. Of course it sucks. Whats the alternative?

I didn't say everything. But what the general public knows is always tip of the iceberg only. And I have no idea what you are talking about because I don't watch that shit.
All I am saying here is it is unhealthy to look at things from one viewpoint and come to a judgement without even considering the other first. And considering we will never know all there is to know, coming to firm conclusions on this subject and declaring the devil is shaky (and biased) anyway because one has to fill in a lot of blanks with guesses, assumptions, and heresay. And in the case of a lot of people, these are uneducated it seems.
and what were you doing just a few posts before. Thats right passing off firm conclusions and judgements about the iraqi insurgency. The reason why the general public lives under the rock is because of the media.

Um, no, as a matter of fact it is not - it goes against principles of war, and generally accepted wartime rules. This invasion resulted in an unfair state of warfare, where the party being invaded has no choice but to put up a fight. Do you honestly expect them to just sit there as their country is pummeled with bombs?
Call it "guerrilla war"; call it whatever you will. It's self-protection, and an attempt to protect your country from unwelcome outside forces.
but see...heres the thing........majority of Iraq is Shia.....majority of those fighting US troops and majority of those targeting civilians on a day to day basis are sunnis...who only form 20% of Iraq and lost power when Saddam lost power
please...look up the meaning of "war"...Saddam never lived up to his end hence he got taken to war......it wasnt some of the hip war...US troops massed on the ground for months while Saddam did not back down....hence the US went to war.....it doesnt get much easier to understand then that

Thats obviously not the solution, but a pullout will be disastrous. Take a look at the closest parallel - Afghanistan. The US maintained an interest as long as the Cold War lasted and then simply dopped it when the Soviet Union pulled out. The state Afghanistan was in at that stage is essentially what would happen to Iraq now. Take a look at Afghanistan now, 25 years down the line. Its still pretty much lawless. The infighting and power grabbing goes on as usual. Average life expectancy is 44 years. That country is a disaster zone. Iraq could easily end up the same way, possibly worse, since the balance between the split communities isnt as skewed as it was in Afghanistan and on top of that, all the oil floating around makes the stakes higher.

It is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy to say that the people of that country will be unable to promptly form a government on their own, with no breakout of impending civil warfare.
Obviously - considering the state that these people have been living under, you can't expect them to form a joint, democratic government as soon as the dust settles. The former regime had only deepened that rift - but what good is a a swift, kick-in-the-ass invasion to bring down that regime without improving the state of affairs between the people, without improving infrastructure - basically, without any improvements at all? The Iraqi people aren't incompetent - sudden collapsation of a country's government would leave any nation in turmoil, and military presence needed. There is no alternative because the US gov't didn't allow for one. Well planned, to suit their own agenda
w3rd! There is no solution where the problem itself is not tackled. And its a bit too late to solve the problem unless we propel ourselves back in time. There will be no long term betterment of the lives of Iraqis. Yea the US will setup a puppet government and things would look rosy for a while. In the end of it all, Iraq would have no control over its resources and subsquently no power over their own affairs. And Iraq is just scratching the surface. This is only setting a precedence over what is yet to come. Thats right, a complete hegemony of the Middle East and control of its resources.

I'm talking about the present. We can all agree on how royally they fucked up in their 'war on terror' and its a waste of time as far as i'm concerned.
Right now there is a toothless government and no homegrown army or even police. Even the US army can't maintain order, and the lack of order has already shown itself to encourage communal violence. I dont see how a pullout at this stage will help. It would be the worst possible direction to take from a situation thats already very bad.

I was by no means justifying Saddam's actions. I was pointing out the fact that the way the US went about removing him and "liberating" the Iraqi people was rash, and not well planned out at all. Perhaps you need to look up the civilian death toll and tell me how easy to understand that is, considering all the "intelligent missile technology" that they've come up with. And by the way, regardless of whether it is the sunnis or the shi'ias fighting against US troops - a large portion of civilians killed are women and children, by US armed forces.
Anyway, oil. :drdodgy:
very true...the war was rushed and many generals have come out have said that more troops on the ground were needed.......another major mistake was the disbanding of the Iraqi military and starting fresh in remaking the Iraqi army
"smart" weapons have not really been used on a large scale in iraq since the opening days of the war
most civilians killed by the americans have been through mistaken targets or where militants are using the cover of heavly populated civilian areas, there are few instances where US troops are targeting and killing civilians on purpose...im sure there are isolated incidents here and there and those troops should be hung

They could stop killing people by the thousands. I think that'd be a good direction to head in.
They could also stop leaving depleted uranium everywhere so that 60% of those hospitalised with cancer aren't children.
But seeing as how we're talking about the present - yes, there seems to be no hope even if they did pull out. A job well done on Operation Iraqi Freedom.
in 10-15 years iraq will be a reborn nation as long as shia-sunni violence dies down in the next little while...thus letting US troops leave...with the amount of oil revenue that could be coming into Iraq....Iraq can modernize very quickly if given the chance
take a look at Beruit, London, Frankfurt, or Tokyo...these modern cities look nothing like there past......Beruit is once again "the Paris" of the middle east...it only happend with foreign investment coming back in after the civil war within the nation ended

yes, most CLUSTER bombs did hit thier targets, effectively causing the most civilian casualties possible, thus resulting in a successful shock and awe campaign.
also destroyed were hospitals and bridges, water towers and other infrastructure targets, since these were the steps to liberation, considering iraqis don't need food, shelter, or water to survive.

In his press conference, General Myers admitted that his forces had bombed civilian areas with cluster weapons. “In some cases, we hit those targets knowing that there would be a chance of potential collateral damage.” Myers went on to declare it was “unfortunate that we had to make these choices about hitting targets in civilian areas. But as we’ve said before, as well, war is not a tidy affair, it’s a very ugly affair”.

When this thread was started, Kamran was specifically singled out and he wasn't even on. And, most people here aren't aware of what his job actually is anyway. It appears that they are just lashing out and taking pot shots at the nearest target. And if that is going to happen, he should at least be present.
I understand that sarcasm is often lost on people, and it seems so here as well. I got it perfectly well from the beginning. The actual point of my post was lost on you, and I've already explained what that was posts ago. If an argument is to be made, it is only fair that both sides are presented and accepted. Next time I'll make my points without sarcasm for the challenged.
People on both sides have lost loved ones. No one loss is worth less than another, every loss is tragic.
And the bolded part, do you have some higher power that I am unaware of?

But seeing as how we're talking about the present - yes, there seems to be no hope even if they did pull out. A job well done on Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Who said there isnt hope. Just that right now, a pullout would simply result in attempted power grabs. One side will win for the time being. The violence and tension will continue. The government will not be allowed to function. Nothing changes. The same pattern can be seen over and over in tons of places where colonial powers just up and left leaving the locals to fight it out.
The pullout obviously has to come, but there needs to a common sense approach to instead of "OMG Bush evil, GTFO". At the very least a temporary compromise/agreement between the different competing sects must be reached and a status quo established. Tensions are inevitable, and they'll obviously be violence etc even then, but if they just leave at this point, the violence is going to be on a much much larger scale because there is no baseline to work from. Take the Partition violence and wars between India and Pakistan. Can you imagine how much worse it would have been if the Brits just left the drawing of a border to us. The wars wouldnt be about kashmir, they'd be for all of Punjab. If a full scalecivil war gets going, conflicts like that dont resolve for decades. I mentioned Afghanistan earlier. Take a look at their history post 1989 if you get a chance.

second of all you can't generalize all troops by the actions of a few. i have many friends in the marines that are actually quite anti war and anti bush. what would you say to them? in the armed forces there are some great, respectful people and some scumbags, like in any group of people.
hey, 19 Muslims flew planes into the world trade center. so should I assume all muslims would do such things???
a white christian blew up a building in oklahoma. so all christians must do that, right?
hindus massacred thousands of sikhs, so all hindus must do this?
a sikh blew up a plane, so all sikhs must do this?
etc etc etc
don't generalize. if people generalize south asians and you get mad, then you're just a hypocrite
waah waah kiyaa baath hai....thaliyaa thaliyaa

the direct flight between pakistan and US got canceled right?
not sure....but they fly out of NY and NJ (both flights went through the UK)....i think there non stop service was between Pakistan and Houstan....but even that may be have a stop on South Korea or the UK since they fly there old 747-200's on that route once in awhile

the war was justified because Saddam never came clean...all of this wouldnt have happend if he stopped playing cat and mouse and just showed the UN inspectors he had nothing
that simple...instead of discussing the Iraq war.....we would be discussing how badly Iran is gonna get its ass kicked in the Fifa Cup :p

PIA pilots rock...I have a few in my family. They are very skillful and professional individuals.
The only flaw of PIA is that their service sucks. The flight attendents are so rude and the food
yeah they are.....dad has only good things to say about them.....he was in the Indian Air Force in the 60's
PIA inflight service is rather low...hopefully the company will improve this image.....then again...flying on PIA is usually cheaper then flying on BA, Singapore, or Emirates

@domestic flying in Pakistan is a bit hectic....some of those planes they are putting on domestic routes are the same planes that US carriers have retired and parked in the desert....PIA comes in and buys them dirt cheap...i guess desis really do like a deal
but im sure they will replace there domestic aircraft too as soon as revenues start growing from there international routes

ive flown all thress...my only complaint with Emirates was when they turned me and dad away from boarding a plane in the UK because we has Israeli visa stamps in our passports.....it had never been a problem before and since that incident never a problem again.....im sure it has more to do with the fellow working for Emirates then Emirate policy since its a world class carrier

Really? Hmm, I took two last year. All I remember is horrible food that made us all sick, rude flight attendants with too much makeup on, the smell of smoke... and some guy in a suit yelling at an old man [who couldn't understand english] because he was sitting in his seat, repeating the phrase "THIS IS MY ENTITLEMENT!"
  I heard this rumor that the flight attendants are actually former prostitutes. Lol, and they sort of do look like ones with the caked on makeup and the way they stick their asses out as they walk around :p
The ones i took were'nt bad at all. I guess its because they were interconnecting international flights.

I think the root of all these problems really is Cheney and Haliburton. Bush is merely a 'figure-head'. They're all controlled by the large multi-nationals and super conglomerates that profit from warmachines.
The root of the problem all comes down to Corporate Social Responsibility.

There's a reason why I don't live in the U.S. The "American Dream" is complete and utter bullshit. It's only a dream if you're White, Anglo-saxon Protestant. And truly especially if you're elite/upperclass.

i doubt it...only major CDN city where Indian desi immigrants are pretty fresh in large numbers is Toronto...and they for the most part work in factories....same as there american counterparts
Indians in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary are much more established since they have been here for many years

If you check the statistics, you'll find that the ones in Toronto have a much easier time adjusting than the ones in say Philadelphia, or Boston.
And remember, money isn't the end all be all of established security. The promise of more $$$ in the U.S. guarantees nothing.
