not every indian who is into rap acts "hood."

i love hip hop and I am indian but I know my roots, and I know I'm not hood or whatever, even tho my dad did experience that. But I know my position is priviliged and that hip-hop is different for me than for a kid on the block.

But I do integrate hip hop elements into my life, but if they express ME, I don't front like I'm something I'm not... some kids on this forum are retarded in the way they act hood.... as for acting gangster, well, people are gangster in different ways, tho few Indians are gangster in the same ways that true minorities are.

However, your post does piss me off... because there are a lot of very talented Indian rappers who are totally real... they are pretty street and pretty gritty but aren't fake, they talk about what they have experienced, which is usually a mix of priviliged lifestyle but some struggles and relation to street lifestyle.

I live in the suburbs and I am not a criminal, I haven't experiened hood life... BUT i do produce and rap, and market for rappers who are from the absolute hood.... I am passionate about hip hop, and I am well connected to the streets because of that, so my enthusiasm makes me real.... and I get nothing but respect from the hip-hop community in which I am involved.

people say I do look intimidating etc, and I def am hip hoppy... but even look at dudes like Rick Rubin and Scott Storch... those dudes may not look totally gangster or whatever, and they don't act like it, but they are 100% hip hop

not everyone is fake... a lot of ppl including myself are the real deal.

btw at the same time a lot of indian kids try too hard to be "white" and act ashamed of their heritage

people, be who you are. if you are passionate about hip hop like me and many others on this forum, then express it and be hip-hop

if you don't like it, respectfully ignore conversation about it, not like what dave302de does

Im sorry but this post is hilarious. So, what struggles go with a relatively nice lifestyle and the whole inner city thing? you both didnt get high or something?

No offense, you sound like you're trying way too hard. I like rap, I even rapped a bit for fun with my friends, but I dont act like I have some special bond. Hell, I lived in Inglewood for five years. I think it's time to look for a record contract.

Oh, Im connected to the streets too I guess. I hang out with dealers, people who have gone to jail, prison, juvie, eses, and i dont even need to rap!

If you werent so critical, I wouldnt have typed this up :)

But its o.k if they act like "Carlton" from Fresh Prince of Bel Air and wear only GAP and Abercrombie and Fitch right :p ? Get over it. Simply b/c a person listens 2 or even loves rap doesn't automatically equal ghetto. I love rap/hip-hop music but I am far from ghetto. U need 2 face the fact that hip-hop is a cross-cultural phenomenon that will never f**kin' go away. It is way more powerful than u would even dream of giving it credit 4 being. The proof lies in the way that people around the world identify with some aspect of it in some way, shape, form or fashion. When u see kids in Nigeria, India, Poland, Isreal and Japan who all know the lyrics 2 the songs of their favorite rapper [NAS, Common, Jay-Z, 50, Eminem] that's something. U may call it a damn shame but don't hate cuz' kids internationally connect more with hip-hop than they do with what is deemed as the "culturally safe and acceptable" music of their parents and grand-parents. It is what it is. Back in the day a lotta people HATED rock n' roll but thank God People like Elvis, Chuck Berry, The Beatles and Hendrix collectively said "Get these nuts. We're gonna do what we wanna and play what we wanna play." The rest [as they say] ... is history.

well, it seems like i'm more passionate about hip hop than you are, so we see things differently. for me hip hop mentality and culture is deeply meaningful because i think in its best forms it is very expressive.

as for struggles, south asians can relate to issues of being misunderstood as a minority, profiled, and life in the urban areas before their families reached a point where they could live a better more priviliged life. also, cultural elements, such as musical styles, share parallels between african culture and indian culture, even though the older generation will hate to hear that. but the same fusion happens with indian jazz music.

you rap with your friends.... that's one thing. i actually am in studios, have worked at a major label, and literally scour my city marketing for artists who are pretty ghetto. i spend many nights either in the booth or behind the boards working with my group or with other artists. but i am being me and not 'trying' to do anything else. i am hip hop, but i don't dress or talk like a stereotypical 'gangster' because that looks lame as hell when south asians do that.

hip hop is something entirely different to you and me, so our perceptions are different.

Lol! U're funny in a pathetic sort of way. Instead of hatin' on hip-hop u should ask yourself why its influence is so pervasive its even poppin' up in those damn "Bollywood" movies :p . Hip-hop style moves, hip-hop sounding music. Even my non-desi a** has seen examples of that on T.V a few times much 2 my amazement. U can't escape it homey. Its like the MATRIX and it has u. Its in T.V commericals, its infiltrated fashion, Hollywood, rock n' roll [think Jay-Z/Linkin Park collabo] like I said even Bollywood is in on it. And if u hate it now ... wait until this summer when the world hears the JAY-Z - NAS collaboration. OMG its a f**kin' rap ... no pun intended ;) !!! Oh and didn't Kanye's arrogant a** open 4 super-group U2 on the North American leg of their tour and part of their European tour? Damn bro' I really feel sorry 4u ... its influence everywhere :D !!!

man, the OP sure got his head up his ass listening to "mmmbop". whatever man, I know plenty of medical students well on their way to becoming excellent docs who listen to rap and live the hip hop lifestyle. Who gives a fuck, it's just music in the end of the day, and I seriously think you suffer from delusions of grandeur thinking that everyone should listen to the music you like.

I'm no fan of the current music rappers are putting out these days, doesn't mean I don't like rap at all. My brother saw Twista at DePaul tonite, yes my fellow Chitown readers, he put on a show at Depaul. But he said all Twista played was his current shit (no adrenaline rush), and the other acts were a bunch of rock bands. He ended up leaving after his set was over totally disappointed, and I would be too. whatever, he's still my favorite rapper besides biggie, mos def, busta rhymes, talib k and the like.

Firstly: you don't know anything about the genre of Rap or Hip Hop for that matter. Secondly: I hate you, your a freak and you are no use to anyone here.

Why doesnt someone ban him, he is the most useless person on the forum ffs.
His job is just to waste peoples time and try start arguments. I bet thats even a fake picture. Mods are fucking useless.

If you don't like a type of music, don't listen to it. You do not have more rights than other people and if they want to listen to Rap and Hip Hop and RnB you just leave them alone. Its their decision. So stfu and fuck off.

I think rap could stand to be a little more thought-provoking.

For music that's so centered around lyrical content, shouldn't the lyrics at least be meaningful?

Personally I'm kind of tired of the "*****z, bitches, hoes, pimps, rims, cars, clubs" image.
