Leaders condemn Yassin killing
CNN) -- World reaction to Israel's killing of Hamas movement leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin has been swift and blunt, with many condemning the action as illegal and a blow to efforts to fight terrorism.
The response comes as thousands of Palestinians jammed the streets of Gaza City for the funeral procession for Yassin, the Hamas founder and spiritual leader.
Yassin was killed early Monday in an Israeli missile strike. Seven other people were killed in the attack (Full story)
Ahmed Qorei, Palestinian Prime Minister, in Ramallah
"The cabinet met today with (Palestinian Authority) President (Yasser) Arafat ... and the issue that dominated all the discussion was about the assassination of a prominent leader of the Palestinians, Yassin, and the way that he was assassinated by the Israeli Apache helicopters and while he was in the early morning praying without even respect to any of the villagers and to the beliefs of the Palestinian people. This was condemned strongly in the meeting, and it's been decided that we will go to the Security Council, the United Nations."
Ariel Sharon, Israeli Prime Minister, in Jerusalem
"The state of Israel this morning hit the first and foremost of the Palestinian murderers. The ideological essence of this man was one -- the murder and killing of Jews wherever they are and the destruction of the state of Israel. I imagine you are all familiar with the bloody and hateful past of this arch -murderer that is as big as any of Israel's leading enemies.
"I wish to thank the security forces for the successful operation this morning. I'd like to make clear that the war on terror is not over, and it will continue every day everywhere. This is a tough campaign that all the nations of the free world understand that they need to take part in. It is the natural right of the Jewish nation, as any other life-desiring nation, to pursue those who rise to destroy it."
Nabil Abu Rudeneh, Arafat spokesman and adviser, in Ramallah
"This Israeli policy is against any peace effort. So far, they are ruining every single effort to find or safeguard a political solution.
"There will never be any kind of peace or stability. This crime this early morning in Gaza is a dangerous sign for everybody, and we urge the American administration to interfere immediately to stop this escalation because no one is going to win.
"He (Arafat) is very angry and we, on behalf of the Palestinian people, we urge everybody to understand that the Palestinian people are under heavy escalation from the Israeli government and the Israeli army."
Alon Pinkas, Israeli Consul General to the United States, in Washington
"It was the right thing to do, as crude as that sounds. He's no spiritual leader. You would think you are talking about Mother Teresa or something is a man that embodies terrorism. He was arrested twice, arrested by the Egyptians to begin with, arrested twice. He's masterminded the brutal killings of children, women, way up in the hundreds. He is a force of incitement, a force of hatred towards Israel, towards America, towards the West, toward the Palestinian mainstream for that matter."
Hasan Rahman, Chief Palestinian Representative to the United States, in Ramallah
"It is absolutely ridiculous to allege that the man who cannot see, cannot hear and who is on a wheelchair can constitute a threat to the biggest military power in the Middle East and one of the biggest the world. That's absolute nonsense."
Hosni Mobarak, Egyptian President, in Cairo
"What happened was more brutal than anyone can imagine and it doesn't make sense. This action was not considered, and the result of the actions were also not considered, unfortunately. It is a sorrowful thing. We condemn this aggression because he is one of the political symbols in Gaza. We were putting all our efforts into the peace process. It aborted all the peace process efforts. This will have reactions all over the Middle East, not just there. They did not consider any reactions when they did this dangerous procedure."
Jack Straw, British Foreign Secretary, in Brussels
"We understand Israel's paramount needs to defend itself, but we also say for Israel to carry the full support of the international community it needs to do so within the boundaries set by international law. It's been the long-standing position of the British government that such targeted killings, assassinations, are out with international law.
"It is very difficult for all countries fighting terrorism to take a measured response in the face of the kind of outrageous terrorism which Israel has suffered. All of us understand that, but a measure of restraint is required and I don't believe Israel will benefit from the fact that this morning an 80-year-old in a wheel chair has been a target of their assassinations."
Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief, in Brussels
"The position of the European Union has been consistently a condemnation of ... killings. In this particular case, I think a condemnation ought to be stronger. These types of actions do not contribute at all to create the conditions of peace, the conditions of dialogue, which are necessary at this moment."
Joschka Fischer, German Foreign Minister, in Berlin
"We are very concerned about the developments. We will observe them very acutely. I am now on the way to Brussels. I am sure that the EU foreign ministers will discuss the current situation. Throughout the day we will also discuss it with our transatlantic-Atlantic partners.
"This is not about fearing something. The situation is as such that all must be done to prevent a further escalation. All sides are called upon to do their part in this effort. At the same time, we are doing everything to pursue a further initiative for the Middle East. However, as said, the current status necessitates a thorough analysis."
Dominique de Villepin, French Foreign Minister, in Brussels
"France condemns the actions perpetrated against Sheikh Yassin. At a time when it is important to mobilize for the relaunch of the peace process, such acts can only fuel the cycle of violence."
Jan Petersen, Norwegian Foreign Minister, in Berlin
"It is quite clear that Hamas is a terrorist organization. We certainly condemn the terrorists acts. But in my opinion this, of course, not justify the extra-judicial killing. The killing this morning is something which we condemn."
Asma Khader, Jordanian government spokesman, in Amman
"We condemn this crime and we find a real obstacle against all political will and efforts to have a sustainable, comprehensive and just peace for all the people of the region."
Hanan Ashwari, Palestinian legislator, in Ramallah
"There will be, I'm afraid, a very tragic recycle of violence. What more cowardly act than assassinating through the use of missile a helpless man in a wheelchair? What we needed was to introduce a whole new language, a whole new discourse. I'm afraid it will spiral out of control."
Shaul Mofaz, Israeli Defense Minister, in Jerusalem
"Ahmed Yassin was a terrorist leader, the Palestinian Bin Laden. His hands were covered in the blood of Israelis, children, women and toddlers. He sent the murderers to carry out the biggest attacks against Israel. I think that the operation carried out this morning is part of an overall policy of the state of Israel in its fight against Hamas and it will continue."
Mark Sofer, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, in Jerusalem
"The world is now rid of one of its most heinous butchers. Now the serious Palestinian interlocutors, who really should have taken the bull by the horns and arrested this man and his cohorts a long time ago, have no choice but to sit down with us. They've taken every step in the books except that."

7 civilians were killed in these attacks as well. If 7 Israeli's died in a hamas inspired attack the entire world of Jewry would be crying foul.
Israel needs to be destroyed and dismantled immediately. Not only are they endangering their own population with these antics, but they are endangering our population as well by giving extremist groups a further excuse to carry out attacks on countries that support Israel's hitleresque' policies.
What a bunch of cowards.

It's not being publicized in our papers, but logically, when you fire THREE MISSLES into what is basically a residential area you are going to have casualties.
But you know, we don't care about Arab casualties.

one thing we can do is to cut off israel funding. but then when you have presidents like bush and kerry (he is an ardent israeli supporter and a jew too) then we continue giving $3 billion every year without getting repayment. they are our welfare country that, in turn, sells our secrets and weaponry and the US looks the other way because, after all, pro-israelis control our gov't. Think AIPAC, weisenthal foundation, ADL, JDL, etc. Look at the furor they caused with the movie The Passion.. and look at how many network stations and newspapers they control. So naturally, the US public gets an altered view of everything and as such, become pro-isreali sheep that support sending money to destroy those arabs!

Bush did the right hting by banning gay marriage. There are millions of Americans who think gay marriage is wrong. Less than 0.5% of the country is gay (Dick Chenys daughter is a lesbian thugh - which I find a bit ironic) - and the other 99.5% of the country is either against gays or they dont care.
Kerry is not going to win.

But you don't waste money to "promote" marriage. how idiotic. give some jobs to the people that need money.

From what ass do you people pull your information? John Kerry was raised a Roman Catholic, and is a praticing one, too. Well, the isrealis could do alot more if they really wanted peace. for one, they could give palestinians their own state and also stop practicing terrorism.
they could treat the palestinians as human beings and not bugs.
they could stop demolishing thier homes and stop firing at random children.
they could also stop building the wall that they are building which is basically putting palestinians in a jail.
honestly, i think if they do get there own state, peace will be achieved, maybe not right away, but for sure terrorism attacks will lessen.

"There will never be any kind of peace or stability." no shit. even if a new palestine is created, there will always be hostility between the two people. its very sad.
soulonice and dj xeno, what do you think the solution is, if one even exists?
Well, the isrealis could do alot more if they really wanted peace. for one, they could give palestinians their own state and also stop practicing terrorism.
they could treat the palestinians as human beings and not bugs.
they could stop demolishing thier homes and stop firing at random children.
they could also stop building the wall that they are building which is basically putting palestinians in a jail.
honestly, i think if they do get there own state, peace will be achieved, maybe not right away, but for sure terrorism attacks will lessen.
you know, before Sharon visited the dome of the rock, there was peace and no suicide bombings for two years before that.
i think after Sharon visited the dome of the rock that is when the current intifada started.
ok you made a nice long list of what israel needs to do, but dont the palestinians need to do anything? or are they perfect?

As for those who died with him, i don't like it either. But I bet you good money he intentionally lived around non-combat people the same way in war some militaries place weapons and soldiers in hospitals, churches, etc.
Just out of curiosity, how would you feel about a Jew strapping himself with a bomb and blowing himself up in, say, a bar in 1947 Berlin? Would you view this as an act of "terrorism," or an act of desperation?
Also, I highly doubt you have any extended knowledge on Hamas and organizations of its ilk other than what you read in your daily rag every morning at starbucks while sipping your latte.
Does Hamas kill and target civilizans? Yes, it does. Does Israel kill and target civilians? Yes, it does. If you support the killing of figureheads such as Yassin, then you should equally support and seek the deaths of people like Sharon, who outside of the United States, is considered nothing more than a common war criminal.

Sharon isn't considered a war criminal in India. He got a pretty nifty reception last time he visited. Israel offered an extremely liberal plan to Arafat, and they decline. Arafat doesn't want peace, his power will be no more. Further, what's the aim of hamas...destruction of israel. I am sure if fanatics leave israle alone, israel will leave the rest alone. The United States is very aware of this, so they cunningly play one against the other. India cannot be seriously considered as an authority on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict...please be real. Who cares how Sharon is recieved in India?
If this so-called "Palestinian aggression" that you speak about is so glaringly apparent, as you claim, then why is Israel repeatedly condemned by the overall world community, as well as having its policies rebuked by the United Nations? Can you answer that? You and your kind are very quick to throw the term "fanatic" around quite loosely, but seem to ignore the fact that the very base on which Israel exists is built on "fanatical" principles, claiming they are reclaiming land that "God" promised them.
Prior to the Jewish influx after WW2, Arabs and Jews in Palestine got along just fine. There was no enmity or strife between the two, in fact, those Jews who were there before the flocks started coming in opposed the creation of Israel just as much as the Arabs did. They still oppose it to this day, this is no secret.
When Israel was created, their military was virtually bestowed upon them by the United States and Britain, so naturally they had a field day driving thousands upon thousands of Palestinians out of their homes to make room for "Jewish Settlements." Unfortunately, the Palestinians weren't granted such boons, so what do you expect them to do? Hamas and groups like it are not pretty, but they are a natural consequence in response to years and years of Israeli aggression and attrition. You can't possibly be so naive as to believe that a group of people who have to resort to throw stones and rocks at soldiers who are armed to the teeth with all kinds of weaponry can be "aggressors."
Get the fuck outta here.

Since this is the leader of Hammas and the guy who leads the suicide bombers who have killed so many innocents in the past, forgive me for not shedding a tear for his death.
-Jihad
Sharon isn't considered a war criminal in India. He got a pretty nifty reception last time he visited. Israel offered an extremely liberal plan to Arafat, and they decline. Arafat doesn't want peace, his power will be no more. Further, what's the aim of hamas...destruction of israel. I am sure if fanatics leave israle alone, israel will leave the rest alone. Let the jews live in peace...everyone will benefit. Is there something called a liberal mullah?

An oasis for who? Yes, I thought so. Why should the Arabs be forced to compensate Jews for crimes that Germans committed? Did you know that while Hitler was offing them by the thousands, the Jews tried to immigrate to the United States, but guess what...uncle sam would have none of it. The Arabs don't have to go anywhere, they have every right to use whatever means necessary to defend themselves from being overrun by what is, essentially, an outside force....by principle.

IMO:
There are so many Muslim countries surrounding Palestine/Israel. If all these countries would end their INNER conflicts, and pay attention to helping Palestine, they could DEFINATELY defeat Israel. Here's a handful of countries: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Indonesia(they are far but..), etc. Of course, these governments are too busy deciding whose a better Muslim and whether Sunni's or Shia's are better. RIDICULOUS. not the palestinians of course, because they are pretty much helpless. but the rest of the Muslim world should work towards a common goal, helping the oppressed Palestinians.

While the death of bystanders is unfortunate, I think they have a perfect right to decimate terrorist groups and their leaders.
The UN proceedings are a joke. Kofi should stick to distributing blankets and food packets instead of attempting to define foreign policy.
The UN Security Council was on a collision course after the US and the Palestinians vowed no compromise over Israel's assassination of a militant Islamist leader.
Capping two days of fractious talks, the council adjourned in deadlock as the United States insisted it would not accept condemning the killing of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin without reference to Hamas, the militant group he founded.
But the Palestinians, represented by lone Arab council member Algeria, said they would not agree to any resolution that mentioned Yassin's Hamas group, which has claimed scores of deadly attacks on Israel in the past three years.
"He preached hatred and glorified suicide bombings," the US ambassador to the United Nations, John Negroponte, said.
"Yassin was opposed to the existence of the state of Israel and actively sought to undermine a two-state solution" in the Middle East, Negroponte said.
"This Security Council should not, and the United States will not, support initiatives which ignore this reality."
Israel killed Yassin, the wheelchair-bound cleric who founded the radical Islamist group, in a helicopter strike in the Gaza Strip on Monday, drawing condemnation from leaders around the globe.
Algeria forced an open debate at the council yesterday after Negroponte blocked a council statement that would have condemned the killing without reference to Hamas's history of attacks on Israel.
The Palestinian representative to the UN, Nasser al-Kidwa, denied that he was trying to paint the US into a corner by forcing a veto on a council resolution about Yassin's assassination.
"A veto has never been our goal and it isn't our goal now," he said after a four-hour session of the council ended in stalemate.
"Our goal is to have action taken by the Security Council now in the right way," he said. But he ruled out Negroponte's call to blame Hamas, saying: "We can't accept any mentioning of any Palestinian group by name."
Now you know why it's all a joke!

Non Muslim countries do not have the power to put sanctions on Israel. Only the U.S. has that power, and that won't happen till donkeys fly.
Palestinians can let Israel be only if Israel stops committing terror attacks and vise versa.
Israelis and Palestinians both engage in terrorist attacks, but look at it this way......when you have the one of the strongest military in the world, why do you have to drop one ton bombs on civilians neighborhoods to take out one man? Why do you have to bulldoze entire neighborhoods for the fun of it?
Israel is perfectly capable of defending itself without the use of terror. The Palestianains on the other hand, while it is wrong, have no other means but to fight back with terror.
Don't get me wrong, suicide bombings are an act of terror, but how would you fight back? Thier lives are so full of death and dispair that they dont even care about blowing themselves up. That fact alone should make one ask why would anyone blow themselves up?
Both sides should not be killing civilians.....but look who just escalated the violence.......israel....everything was calm until this attack........not to mention assissination is illegal, but israel is perfectly capable of arresting this man, putting him to trial and jail and then do whatever they want with him.
but what they chose to do was to fire missles at a man who is in a wheel chair and kill civilians also.

Aite, i gotta jump in on this. 1st of all, there are WAY TOO MANY ISRAELI haters on this site. But getting back to the killing of Yassin. Yes it might seem like a horrible thing, a war crime even by Israel, but i don't see it that way. He was a criminal, straight up. He led an organization (a terrorist organziation) commited to the destruction of a soverign state....and nobody here better give me ANY BS claimin how Israel isn't a soverign state. The Israeli govt has teh right to protect its citizens, just like how the US government is protecting all of us RDers that are in the US. I may not agree with some of Israel's methods (unecessary demolishing, etc), but they have to be done in order to stop the terrorists. I'm all for a two state solution, i wanna see a democratic (NOT ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALIST) Palestine and Israel living side by side, in peace and prosperity, but that is only gonna happen when both sides step up to the plate and offer concessions and compromise. Palestinans need to stop the suicide bombings, disarm the miltiants and dismantle their organizations, and maybe have a change in leadership. Israel needs to get rid of the settlements, offer more compromises without jepordizing security and just generally ease life for the palestinians. I trully think Arafat was a dumbf--k not to accept Barak's peace plan in 2000....that was the closest the palestinans ever got to their own state...i'm sure they could have worked out remaining issues later. But no....arafat refused and the intifada began..with both his active and tacit support. But i'm hopeful things will change soon...i want Kerry to win in November, he seems like he would put the peace process back on track; And FYI, Kerry is Catholic, not Jewish. But like somebody earlier said that if the suicide bombs stop, Israel will stop its aggression. Please people, don't bother the Israelies, they are just trying to live a normal life, like you and me.

Seriously, you can't put the UN aside when it rules against Israel. 137 countries certainly means something. If you ignore that, you're fucked up. I don't know what else is there to say.
Seriously man, just stick to being a moderator. What college did you go to? You give it a bad rep.
