how long would it take for me to write an average amateur song?
i dont have any experience, but i can play some power chords on guitar, and my voice isnt decent, but it sounds passable when i record it and distort and clean up a bit on acid pro and similar programs
i dont have any help, the drums and other sounds ill have to add in with acid pro as well
i was having a large argument with these music elitists on how they were being implicitly ludditeish in hating music that is produced
so we have this bet going, which would sound better made by a beginner for practically no experience, a natural song, or one that is over produced on the pc, and i have to make a song in 2 weeks..
is that enough time?
i have some lyrics down, but im still looking for a good chorus
anyone care to offer some tips?

I've composed music on software, like FruityLoops. I converterd Carcass's - Incarnated Solvent Abuse - off Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious into drum and bass, hilarious!

Dunno, depends on what type of music ur into i guess... if its rock, then yeah, i would have to agree with the others... even though i make most of my music using adobe audition and Reason. Record the vocals and guitar (and bass, if u have one) to keep it as organic as u can. I dunno how good u are at programming beats, but u can make some decent sounding ones if u tweak with em enough. What i often do (i know its cheating), but take two sampled hihat loops, and slap em together, maybe changing the pitch on one of them to make it sound homemade. Put on a bassdrum and snare that fits, and u got urself a beat ;)

I want to learn cubase, i've heard it's good so i'm downloading a video tutorial on how to use it. Anyone who can use that is a genius because the user interface lost me alone.

Cubase is cool.... if u know how to use it. But if u dont need all the advanced functions, there's no point. My impression is that cubase is mainly used for recording and editing, unless u have loads of plugins. My brother uses Logic Pro, but using heavy duty sequencers like those are overkill in my opinion. Reason is enough for me, since the sequencer has all the functions i need...

Back... sorry it took so long, it didnt turn out the way i wanted, but check it out and lemme know. Didnt have time to tweak the levels, so it probably soudns very unmixed, too simple and very annoying.

I do mostly electronic music and just recently remixed The Cars - Moving in Stereo....It really doesn't take that much. As long as you know the basics of music theory, you can do everything on the computer. If you really wanna get creative, then take a look at understanding sound synthesis. Both my brother and I are big music fans and enjoy various types of music. He's an audio engineer in hollywood and I'm makin my way up the underground ladder. You can check out some of my work on myspace.com/menlopark.
