With Eminem it was different, he had to work really hard to earn the respect of everyone who doubted him and he had all of white America supporting him.

We hate our own kind more than any other race. Desi's also look down upon black culture a lot, and in most cases due to parental influence.

There's too many factors going against the success of a desi rapper so I'm inclinded to say that it will never happen.

thing is, Desi rappers havent really got the lyrics init...they either keep on repeating the same lyrics again and again in one verse, or they're just REALLY REALLY embarrassing e.g. my topic a few months ago on TKM - Gangsta...i grew out of the whole 'Gangsta' phase wen i was like 15, these are like 22-35 year old guys in their rentals goin on like Asian Chavs...

No they won't just like they won't take Heavy Metal Bands from South Asia seriously. It's just a regurgitation of what has already been done.

Yeah I agree the image has a major impact on promoting yourself. The problem with desi rappers/singers whatever, they always include a bit of asian in it, maybe an asian beat, asian singing bascially something related to our culture. This is probably what's narrowed down the audiences they are aiming their music at.

The other problem is, any non-black artist trying to get into a predominantly black business is going to have a problem, as we've all seen in the past.

at least there's desis in rock bands, even popular ones.. and they're the epitomy of unoriginality ... ex. sum 41

but it doesn't matter, because they don't have to have a certain image as strongly as rappers do

in rock, you could have some really stereotypical fobby guy playing the guitar, and as long as he does it well, rockers would just lol at it

in rap, if you did that, it just wouldn't have the same effect

That's true. Rock music is more accepting of other cultures breaking in, in fact, they seem to embrace it more.

With hiphop, you're immediately questioned and labelled if you're not black. Guys like Eminem and Jin have to work 10 times harder than the average rapper. Not knocking Eminem but he had a huge advantage of suburban white boys supporting him.

Desi's don't have that advantage. If a desi rapper makes it, no matter how good he is, most desi's will hate on him. Hating is just a part of desi culture in general.

If you're a talented desi rapper, the best thing would be go to do India to build up a large following fanbase and try rapping in hindi/punjabi, otherwise its not likely going to happen.

1) indians will always hate..n' its about to change that.

I agree with the fact not many of them have the flow yet..and still have to develop it..but whoever said that they say the same shit! WELL stop listening to your favorite rapper then! LOL Like seriously..thats all recylced shit anyway. In the end what u like is the beat and the appeal in the video! so don't bring shit like its nothign original!

Now back to my point of Desi rappers, yeah there will be only one that will prove he's got good commercial flow, stablity in the scene and got a good presence on mixtapes being versatile. Not only to mention, for all who don't know about the music bizz..is WE DON'T HAVE PROPER DESI PEOPLE INVESTING IN OUR MUSIC. We got old fashion mind people, who won't even fork out for promotion & videos. And thats the biggest lack at this point for the South Asian urban scene!

nuff said..it can go on :)

if they go the talent, dedication and most of all LUCK...like Eminem had with Dre picking him up, then ANYONE can make it.

But i also agree desis and other minorities will have a bigger battle than Em did to make it. reason is that the rap world eventually accepted Em due to his talent, so unless an asian with more talent than than Em comes along, they will always be compared to him and dismissed in the mainstream if they dont live upto it.

Em is the new bar for "non black" people trying to make it in America unfortuneately...

Bohemia appropriates a lot of Tupac's style. Most people loved Tupac, so it's no surprise that Bohemia is getting some recognition. I think it's kind of wrong though. He says he's a poet and deep thinker like Tupac, he says he didn't even want to be rapper (just like Tupac) and he has his nose pierced (just like Tupac!). He claims to have been raised on the "rough" streets of Oakland, but not many people recall seeing him. Not to mention that many of his song titles and sample music on his tracks sound a lot like Tupac's music style and we won't even go there about the little "thug" tats. I have mixed emotions about him. I like his music but when it starts biting really hard off Tupac, it can be annoying. (and no I'm not hating on Bohemia, just stating the facts and some personal opinions) I think people are ogling over him because he's like the first well known Punjabi/desi gangsta rapper. It's a bit of an anomaly. I wish he would be more original. I can give this to Bohemia though, he has tenacity and from what I understand he was sleeping his car and taking any gig he could get just to make it, but then that can be said of all "struggling artists". I know some people would probably say that Tupac bit off desi culture in some way but I don't agree. Tupac was a philosopher who was saddened by the mental and economical state of blacks when he was alive. Most of his songs had a political "keep ya head up" type message towards blacks that encouraged progression rather than regression. I mean yea he had his moments where his music was normal gangsta rap but mostly you can tell this guy had a heart and wanted to change the circumstances for his people and the way society at large viewed the black community. His music WAS and IS poetry at its finest.

I'm assuming none of you have ever listened to Lazarus (http://www.myspace.com/lazdetroit), then?

Having sold close to 10,000 copies of various mixtapes, Lazarus has made himself a Detroit icon in the hip hop scene and continues to grow in the streets and on the internet. What separates this Pakistani-American from the typical spitfire lyricist in the industry is his undeniable ability to write songs and catchy hooks of subject matter from every range of the spectrum. Having a father who’s a hustler, an older brother who’s a heavyweight boxer from the Kronk Gym, and a crack-addicted Uncle, Lazarus speaks on what he sees in his life in the realest, most creative and passionate way that it can be delivered: through wordplay, vocabulary, and vast amounts of emotion. Lazarus comes off as versatile in his range of rap styles, the way he shifts from calm to hard to lyrical, and then from slow-paced to fast. Lazarus has an incredible amount of shows under his belt, from performances at St. Andrews, to the Bull Frog, to the Majestic Theatre, to headlining for the Ruff Ryders, Industry Night at Club Rain, and at the “Vote or Die” campaign at Wayne State University to name a few. Lazarus also rapped at Joe Louis Arena prior to a G-Unit performance. Having defended his freestyle skills on many stages and after retiring as battle champion on “Freestyle Friday” on radio station FM 95.5, Lazarus continues his journey into song-writing. With two articles in the Promoter Magazine, and articles spreading from Wayne State University to Michigan State University, the name continues to spread. Lazarus recently got the chance to be one of three MCs (alongside Ill Uno and Hush, who is signed to Geffen Records) to be featured in a worldwide documentary on the Discovery Times Channel hosted by 2-time Pulitzer Prize Winning New York Times writer Charlie LeDuff. The big buzz generator for his being chosen for the documentary was his song “Godflow.” The song, consisting of 100 bars, made Lazarus the first 2-time hall of famer on detroithiphop.com, gave him the hip hop quotable, placed him as “Artist of the Month” on detroitrap.com and nominated him ‘Lyricist of the Year’ at the Detroit Hip Hop Awards. On top of that, the song became a regularly played track on the number 1 radio station in Detroit, FM 98 WJLB. Canadian radio stations, along with Detroit’s FM 102.7, and FM 89.3 followed and continued banging “Godflow” every week since it was made and continue to do so. The song also continues to spread via DJs across the country. “Dream of a Hustler,” a song about how Lazarus’ father came to America from Pakistan with 50 dollars in his pocket, was next to hit the radio stations. “Struggle of a 16 Bars” and “O Brother” followed next. With 4 tracks getting radio play, Discovery Times got a hold of him to put his story out for the world to see: on Cable Television. What started as a dream behind a hungry battle MC is steadily unfolding to the mission it was intended to be: to revitalize the essence of hip hop music and let the world see passion, energy, and determination like never before. Currently, Lazarus works with engineer/producer Detroit guru IV Duncan of Music Brokers to finish his first major LP “Chapter 1: The Prince Who Would Be King” and is in the process of hosting DJ Butter’s new mixtape “Lazarus For President.” Detroit legend Royce 5’9” has been featured in the project on a political track entitled “Born To Die.” Currently in medical school, Lazarus wants to show the type of impact that hip hop, as an art form and as a form of music, can have on an audience and showing how he is more than capable of making an album that will be appreciated amongst the hip hop classics. In breaking stereotypes of his race, and in standing for hip hop and education, Lazarus marches past the borders of Detroit, out to America, and out to the world. It’s time for a revolution.
