So out of curiousity what events take place? What is the ceremony like? Does it differ between the different types of Muslims, or is it all the same?

Theyre both having a Sikh ceremony and a Muslim ceremony...id just like to know what ill be seeing there! :D

So bring on the knowledge! :D

The actual wedding is a few minutes long, a Maulana (religious head) comes and brings a contract paper in which both the man and woman sign. Once that is completed you are married.

The fun part is the before and after of the actually wedding.

and the tappin the ass part

pithi bachelor party.. they both go out seperately and have drunken sex with multiple partners

rukhsati - when the girl leaves her parents home and goes to the guys house its a handing over of sorts. This is when your parents find out you got laid

valima - when the whole world knows you jizzed or got jizzed on, they have a big party

ok to break it down ..........

mehndi ceremony .... similar to sangeet
boys side have one and girls side have one or sometimes it's joint sometimes its skipped and don't have one

nikah .. similar to ceremony at gurdwara but doesnt last 4 hours

if it's a not so religious wedding then there'll be dj and dancing :dance3: but no alcohol

rukhsati ... where the bride departs to her new home usually at the end of the nikah

and finally walima .... party offered from the boys side

rooksathi is when the bride is leaving her home, she throws rice and all and when she enters her new home, similar to hindu traditions minus the red sindoor stuff im guessing on the feet

pithi

gals--when she has haldi put on her by everyone in her family--guys side too--but not the guy himself, shes fed sweets indvidually by each person who blesses her and he/she throws roses on her

guys--same thing but you can throw eggs and what not at the guy==i don't know why but its hella fun!

one side of my family we got muslims and americans mixed - other side of my family they still try to do arrange marraiges
yeahi suppose so. i dont know. see my family doesnt do the straight..YES YES thing and get married. we are given time to get to know each other..and if he dont like each other..we dont get married...i suppose different families have different views of what they consider ARRANGED..

Islamically, a muslim wedding is comprised of a nikah and a walima (a small banquet). All other functions such as mehndis, mayoons et al are borrowed cultural practices. In Islam they are considered bidah (innovation), and theres no intermixing of the sexes, you would usually find seperate halls for men and women.

its simple all the guests come in an hr late, the bride and groom are speareted they arent supposed to see each other till the niqqah, the quazi goes to the bride and groom separtely and then do duas and make em say kabul 3 times and they are to sign a cirtificate. and then food is served people eat and leave

nikkah is basically a sacred contract of marriage, the bride and groom mutually agree on this contract. Mahr (gift/dowry given to the women from the men) is given. There has to be witnesses present. A qazi usually conducts this ceremony. Valima is held after the consummation of marriage. A valima is held to make people aware of the marriage and Islamically its not supposed to be a big grandiose event. Free mixing of the sexes is not allowed in islam, im sure ur aware of this, so they usually book out two separate halls. They cant display the bride in front of other men esp on stage. plus women could freely move on about in a seperate hall and enjoy more instead of being covered fully in front of other men.

A Nikah consists of the Imam(religious figure) asking the girl if she accepts the marriage to the guy and she has to say kabul (I do) three times and signs the marriage contract, and the same happens for the guy.

They are both done separately, especially for the girl thats usually in private so that the imam can make sure she ain't being forced or anything.

Everything else is kinda added extra, some is allowed some isn't.

Most western pakis and even ones back home have mehndis, mayun etc. just like hindus n sikhs.

A walima is basically from the boy's side once the girl is comfortable and it is usually done after consumation although I am not aware of this being a pre-requisite. But come on wat kinda married couple won't do it in the first week??! oh yeh....ugly ppl!! :D

Anyway, the nikah is sposed to be really simple and walima is technically supposed to be the big celebration because the guy is so happy he obviously wants to share his joy with the whole village of course :p

It means feast, so technically only has to consist of fooooood!!

The converting thing: Muslim boy can marry Christian or Jew, with no need for them to convert. Sikhs.....technically no but if the girl is a complete monotheist and doesn't mix in idolatry I guess it might be allowed? :dunno:

wow the nikkah is a very short ceremony..probably lasts only 5 minutes?? now i can understand why the girl has hers in private...its good to see that the religious figure asks if shes accepting of it and not being forced.

yeah alot of my muslim friends say the valima is the big bash..and nikkah is very low key and small.

i dont see why conversion should be such a big deal? sorry..i just dont.

It is very rare to see weddings held in seperate halls... most of the functions that we perform are derived from the indian culture.

Like the mehendhi we do is the same as yours... just subtract the alcohol.

The wedding day is obviously done by the girl's family.

The valima is not always so strict... we recently had one and it is like a wedding but the bride and groom are more comfortable with each other and go around and greet all their guests just for common courtesy. It is also a celebration that kind of welcomes the bride into the groom's family.

But it depends on the family so you are better off asking a member of his family!

our family functions usually compromise of:

a little engagement
a big engagement
a dholki or two
a mehndhi
a jalebi
a dood cermony
a nikkah, then the reception
a rukhsathi
a valima (to validate the wedding has been consummated)

it's like a one month affair at the Al bega's, lol.

Ive been to all three...

the best one is the Hindu Punjabi type (Hindu ones are interesting...myth that it takes ageees can make it about an hour... and also we have all the wicked bhangra stuff )

Muslim ones are kinda boring..no offence

He says to the Imaam that he is willing to marry the girl....(his vows) then she in another room basically says ok (her vows) then they are married... its faster than Hindu or Sikh ones...but its just too simple

...I went to one recently when there wasnt even allowed any dancing the Muslims were that strict

yes. usually all have the nikah and valima. what you do on those occasions besides the typical stuff usually varies according to geographic region. yes for example muslim punjabis have more traditonal punjabi practices. and south indian muslims have more s. indian practices. but it alos varies as to how religiouls the wedding is.

Yes completely, weddings are probably one of the most commonly found practices that most ppl (even religious ppl) tend to embellish in a little, and mix in many cultural practices....which can be good or bad depending on wat it is.

Im sure its even the same for Sikhs though. Correct me if im wrong but I don't think the Sikh weddings with bhangra, alcohol, more alcohol and lewdness are in accordance with the teachings of Sikhi.

This is where the discrepency comes in. An Islamic wedding has been described above but a Muslim wedding frequently consists of the core elements required by Islam for a valid marriage with lots of surpluses!

Actually, jus out of interest what would a religious Sikh wedding be like?

It depends where the muslim is from
Cuz in islam u only supposed to have a Nikah
but most Pakiz do what most indians do, they have 4 receptions or 3
1st is mehndi ,2nd is nikah/barat 3rd could be barat/walima or 4th could be da walima.

Qul ya ayyuhul Kafirun?

Jews aren't Kafir, they are Ahl-e-Kitab.

And dont be silly, why would we hate them? You can marry one if you want. Although I don't doubt Jews probably do have a slight implicit enmity towards Muslims, simply because they probably believe we corrupted stuff and don't believe in Nabi etc etc. similarly to the way we feel about ......... Ahmedis.... Baha'is?

From a Muslim perspective, the wedding ceremony is very simple. There is a contract, the nikkah. The man and the woman agree that they are doing this out of their own free will and make the oaths to be faithful, good spouses. This is done infront of 3 witnesses I believe.

after the wedding, the guys side does a Valima, which is a community get-together and celebration.

All the rest of the ceremonies are borrowed from cultural/Hindu traditions. A Punjabi, South Indian, and African Muslim will have totally different cultural additions but the Nikkah and Valima are the ones that are mandatory.

the main thing is the nikah, thats like the marriage contract. other than that the valima is a must religiously, even if its really small and simple. other than that Muslims of different places celebrate differently, usually desis have a dholki, mayoon, mehndi, rukhsati (barat comes and joota chupai and the milk drinking and traditional stuff) and of course a valima. how much dancing, and other stufff there is depends on each family and usually how religious they are.
