I don't really work in finance although I work for one of the big four accounting firms in a technical role. I do have a great interest in finance though and read up on it all the time. What about you guys?

Are you working in Sarbox or along those lines?

Yeah I try to keep uptodate with some of it.....although it gets quite repetitive after a while. Currently working for a Public Sector organisation within a Counter Fraud unit (Audit and Risk based projects).....looking to move into Big 4 after a years exposure here.

Actually...How is the IIA (institute of internal auditors) qualification valued over there? It becomes CIA in the USA.....but is it sought after in big practices over there?

i dont know. we are mostly external auditors. so its the cpa that matters and yes its an important qualification unless you are coming out of college or quite young. then you dont need it.

Awesome accounting is the way to go! You wanna work for a large corp. or start your own small firm?

To be honest, I really haven't thought that far ahead yet.

I have a final year of accounting to complete, 1-2 years of work experience and then 2 years of chartered accountancy training.

I think I will go onto to traing as a Management accountant though... but still not certain.

Standing from here though, I can say that I would prefer to see myself working for a large corp.

I do, be aware its a tought transition from accounting to finance as firm tend to typecast you as either own or the other. If you want to work in investments, you should try to make that transition soon that later as it become increasingly more difficult to do so as time passes, which I learned from my own experience.

Yes.. true.

But keep in mind, I'm referring to guys who don't work for large corps, but instead have started their own firm and have worked with small businesses, built rappor and a good client base. The road to good money is paved with good Customer Service... that's what it all boils down to. You could be the best accountant or the best doctor or the best lawyer in the world... but if your PR skills and/or bed-side manner sucks, you'd be screwed.

My personal plans are to take get some stock market and risk management skills [not so much an accounting thing technically], and work the stocks....... play the market right and you'll end up with a LOT more than 300K Some of the richer people I know have never gone to Uni, but have a shrewd mind and have worked their way to success through the stock market.

Smart move dude. Quants are where it's at now. Banks don't care about Ec or Finance degrees for trading roles. I'm on a prop desk right now but in 2yrs there's no way I could get the same job. See link below for the kind of qualifications needed today...may surprise you.

YEYYY!!

I got the job I wanted :D so contrary to wat I said earlier, I am actually gna b staying in my hometown, earning about £10k less but then again got zero expenses coz mummy wil take of all that!!!

I think I will b placed in IB Tech, probably working with Equities agen or I might go into Hybrid and Exotic markets  guess it all depends on business need.

But I wanna do Analysis by far!! It would b much easier to then progress into a top end role of an Accountancy as an IT Auditor as wel later on in life!

Pardon my ignornace, but what are quants?

I'm aiming to get my finance degree, I don't know what kinds of jobs there are available. Do you have any suggestions or areas that I can read up on more? It would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.

Quants are people from quantitative fields. Physicists, mathematicians, biologists etc. When you think about it, markets are all about numbers and quants are the best at crunching numbers. There is a growing trend now where investment banks are hiring more and more people from these areas and less of the traditional Ec/ Fin types. I'm the only guy on my desk without a quant background. I feel so stupid  .The guy next to me used to measure rain density in the Amazon for a living. Now he trades Aussie FX.
Read up on Chaos theory if you want to get a good idea of market price action at its most basic level.

i was quite pissed to find out that UCSD doesn't have a finance major....i am so confused....most people tell me Business Admin. is too general of a degree....most recommend Economics....it would have been great if ucsd had finance too, then i could double major in finance and econ...

anyway, after graduating, i want to have all three options available, go into the job market, law school or business school

my goal is to break into Investment banking

right now i am thinking of majoring in Econ and minor in political science, or major ECon and minor in business admin.

wat do u guys think?

I wouldent want 2 work for the top accounting firms, I went 2 a meeting with PWC in manchester uni, man, they want you to work like dogs for your money.
They all seem like robots with no life.
