Nice, their effort earns them the status of "infidels" and a sure place in hell!
WANA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's army declared a ceasefire on Sunday with suspected al Qaeda fighters near the Afghan border to allow tribal elders to try to negotiate the militants' surrender.
The tribal peace council is to travel to the region Monday morning under the protection of a white flag, said Brig. Mahmood Shah, chief of security for the area. Fighting would stop while the council was negotiating, though Shah refused to call it a cease-fire.
The council will be carrying a list of three government demands: that the elders free 12 soldiers and two government officials taken captive earlier this week; that they hand over tribesmen involved in the fighting; and that they kick out any foreigners or show the military where to track them down.
At the Wana hospital, dozens of relatives of victims were wailing and cursing the Pakistani army and President Gen. Pervez Musharraf — a key Washington ally — as more injured people arrived for treatment. They told doctors that they were targeted by the army.
"Pakistani soldiers are like beasts," said tribesman Mukhtar Wazir, as he looked on three wounded children receiving treatment. "See, these children are like flowers. Are they terrorists?"
"Musharraf is evil, (U.S. President George W.) Bush is Satan," said Wazir.
The military has refused to give updates of casualties until the current operation is complete.
On Friday, Sultan said 17 troops had been killed, most in the initial assault Tuesday. Only 26 militants have been confirmed killed. The actual toll is believed to be much higher on both sides.
Regional military commander Lt. Gen. Safdar Hussain said Saturday that most of the militants' radio conversations that were intercepted by the military were in Chechen and Uzbek, though some were in Arabic.
He would not be drawn on who the "high-value target" might be — only saying that the intensity of the resistance led him to believe he was probably still in the region. Pakistani officials speaking on condition of anonymity have previously said it was believed to be al-Zawahri
But anger is growing in the fiercely independent tribal region of South Waziristan, and 7,000 protesters gathered at a rally in one village on Sunday to demand troops be withdrawn.
In Islamabad, 70 Muslim clerics denounced the raid as unIslamic and issued a decree saying government soldiers killed in the operation had died as "infidels".
"Even their funerals are not legitimate under Islamic law," Qazi Abdual Aziz, the chief cleric at the capital's Red Mosque told a news conference. "Only those who killed in resistance against this operation are martyrs."

I dont understand one thing. How the fuck can 16 soldiers get killed by a bunch of rebels who are holed up and cornered? What the hell, the soldiers have everything available to them including armored vehicles, full body kevlar coated armor, remote controlled recon gadgets, stun gas, nerve gas, sattelite imagary, IR-goggles at night if they choose, heck they probably even have trained dogs that they could unleash....did some idiot just tell them to grab some slingshots and charge in to try and disarm some guys who probly just have AK-47s there? I mean what the faaack?!

They have more then AK-47s, they have all sorts of weaponry including RPGs.
Now the Pakistanis have sent in the SSG commandos. ( On a training Mission the SSG beat the Delta Force in nearly every exercise ) the only thing is the Americans have better technology. Physically they are not as strong as the SSG. They are lucky they have the SSG on their side.
Pakistan has captured more then 1000 Alquida operatives and some elites.

Now they're saying the target has escaped!
AFP Reports: Pakistani forces said an "important" Al-Qaeda-linked target may have escaped a beseiged tribal village near the Afghan border by slipping through a secret tunnel.
The two-kilometre (one-and-a-quarter-mile) tunnel was discovered during a ceasefire on Monday after a five-day bombardment of the village by thousands of troops backed by helicopter gunships and artillery.
"Authorities have found a two-kilometer (1.2 mile) long tunnel running between the homes of two wanted tribesmen and leading to a stream," Brigadier Mehmood Shah, chief of security for Pakistan's northwest tribal region, told reporters.
The current operation was launched after paramilitary troops (special forces?) tried to raid Naek Muhammad's home and arrest him on March 16. The troops were taken by surprise by scores of heavily armed fighters, who pummelled them with grenades and machine-gun fire, killing 15 soldiers, wounding 22 and taking 12 hostage.
Military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said the Pakistani forces had underestimated the strength of the fighters.

Thats a pretty long tunnel. I would have thought sonar would have shown something like that. I guess its not standard procedure to map out the hidden structures of a compound before you attack it even when you have the time and technology?
It sounds like a sorta sloppy operation.

Turning out to be a "Wag the Terrorist" kinda operation. Prez. Musharraf enthusiastically speculated about Zawhari, albeit with no hard evidence, to an eager CNN last Thursday. But seems like this was yet another gigantic piece of psyops...

In a new tape aired on Arabic Al Jazeera television and attributed to Ayman al-Zawahri, the al Qaeda number two -- believed hiding on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border -- called President Pervez Musharraf "the traitor."
"I call on Muslims in Pakistan to get rid of their government which is working for Americans," said the voice on the audio-only tape, which sounded like Zawahri.
Pakistan, a key U.S. ally in the "war on terror," has been waging a bloody campaign over the last fortnight to root out al Qaeda fighters in tandem with a U.S. sweep on the other side of the Afghan frontier.
Pakistani officials said last week the fierce defense the militants were putting up suggested they were protecting a "high-value target," perhaps Zawahri, who Washington believes played a key role in the September 11, 2001, attacks.
The military later rowed back, saying this was unfounded "guesswork" and the target might be a Chechen or Uzbek warlord.
Musharraf, who has to balance pressure from Washington with anti-U.S. sentiment at home, narrowly escaped two assassination attempts in December blamed on Muslim militants.
The CIA, which said two similar messages last month were probably from Zawahri, was checking the tape's authenticity.
"Musharraf wants to stab the Muslim Jihad (holy struggle) uprising in Afghanistan in the back," the voice said.
"The Pakistani people had offered a helping hand to their brothers in Afghanistan, that's why Americans delegated Musharraf to take revenge on the tribes along the border, especially the Pashtun."
The offensive -- Pakistan's largest ever against al-Qaeda -- appears to have been a disaster for the army, with at least 49 troops dead or missing since the first raid on March 16. Western diplomats believe the real troops' toll could be as high as 100.

yes, i do fault india for being pussies and not tankflexing the poop out of pakistan when it easily could have. but make no mistake, because they didnt doesnt mean they couldnt, or still cant. they were just idiots and were scared of international opinion. if there was an all out conventional war tomorrow, pakistan would get thrashed. they got thrashed 3 times in a row while india showed restraint. its not hard to figure out, india is far more capable in every military category. they have larger fleets, more soldiers, higher technology and more funding. its common sense yaar.

I find that very unlikely since we have just established that hindustan is equivalent to a vagina
they were just idiots and were scared of international opinion.
really?
they got thrashed 3 times in a row while india showed restraint.
if pakistan got thrased, then why show restraint? what kind of a moronic savant of a logic is that? either inhabitants of india dont have any balls or they simply dont have the means.
its not hard to figure out, india is far more capable in every military category.
as proven by the 56 year old struggle with a country half its size?
they have larger fleets, more soldiers, higher technology and more funding. its common sense yaar.
well now that you mention it..."percentage" wise, pakistani army is richer in weaponry and artillery per person then the inhabitants of india.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan scornfully dismissed a taped message, apparently from Osama bin Laden's deputy, calling for the overthrow of the government, and vowed on Friday to step up the hunt for al Qaeda fighters.
Thousands of protesters, chanting "Musharraf is a dog" and "Down with America," gathered in Rawalpindi and other cities, accusing the government of pandering to President Bush at the expense of Muslims.
"We will instil hatred of the United States in every Pakistani child," read one banner in Rawalpindi, where some protesters burned an effigy of Musharraf after conservative Islamic politicians demanded an end to the offensive.

What the hell is going on here with the military skills. You have a 1 to 1 kill ratio where a cornered band of militants can manage to kill an equal amount of soldiers. Arent the soldiers the ones who have access to sattelite imagary, sonar echos, infrared goggles at night, radio signal intercepts. I thought special forces existed so that they could go in and capture/kill with practically zero casualties...what the fuck is going on here?

Certainly has been a major failure on all fronts, strategic planning/military execution/diplomatic reconciliation. The interesting thing is there are two distinct versions of the operation:
The Paki protesters (ranging from the beards on the street to the highly educated Supreme Court members) are stating that the government operation is against Paki nationals
On the other hand, the government officials insist that they are fighting foreign terrorists
So far, the majority captured or killed have been local tribesmen. I think Musharraf has worked out a deal with the US which enables him to insert the Paki army in the previously "independent" NWFP area. Trying to get this region under Paki control, now that they don't have a friendly Western neighbor. The NWFP seceding to Afghanistan has been a major nightmare for Islamabad after the fall of the Taliban.
No Legal Justification
Addressing the participants of main demonstration in Islamabad, Supreme Court Bar Association Vice President Muhammad Ikram Chaudhry said that government had no legal justification of an assault against its’ own countrymen.
“Neither legally nor morally, has government had any right to use force against own people,” he said.
Country-wide Protest
The lawyers’ community representative threatened to launch country wide protest if government did not end the operation immediately and restore normalcy in the area.
The government has recently launched what officials termed ‘massive and decisive’ operation in the remote tribal areas of NWFP against suspected foreign militants supposed to be hidden there and those harboring them.
